  1. I'm totally shocked and saddened by the news. While we never met in the flesh, he will be missed here on the forum. My heart goes out to Rebecca for being strong enough to contact people out in the internet and let them know what happened.
  2. Meh, I have a big fat zero! The green surf guitar gets my vote. I want that guitar.
  3. I am getting started on my 2x4. I selected the most crappy piece of 2x4 from my scrap pile to work with. The good news is that it will be weather proof when its done. It's pressure treated.
  4. This is the 2nd time I surfed that site. The first time I saw it, the design didn't grab me. Now, I must be in the right mindset because I love it. It's a Tele... It's a LP... It's both. It also struck me as one of those "why didn't I do that" kind of designs. It's so nice and simple.
  5. I've been able to make a neck with just the following. An electric drill with drill bits and a drum sander. A Swiss army knife. A rasp. Sand paper. Frets installed with... A hammer. Wire cutters. A bastard file. A coping saw. Aside from the drill, those are all hand tools. I could even use a hand drill if I needed to. I seem to be using power tools less and less. I think I just know where they do the most good. The really fine touches have to be done by hand in my opinion.
  6. Matt, I still say with your pictures and your write ups that you should write a book and sell it. Your work is that good and your attention to detail is top notch.
  7. If you split it down the middle you'd have 2 2x4's...then you could just glue them bck together That's splitting hairs, so to speak. Technically, you could use a 2x8, but you would also have to use a 2x4 according to the initial rule. I don't want to say what you can and cannot use. If you can honestly say, "I used a 2x4 to make this." you've satisfied the one and only rule. The spirit of the build is to limit yourself to use something undesirable, or just not worthy of a build. A 2x4 is not an ideal size so you will have to cut it somehow. It's probably not the greatest tone wood either, probably too soft, yadda yadda yadda. We know all that. But can you sew a silk purse from a sow's ear? I feel all zen-like now.
  8. There is nothing more fine than the fuglycaster.
  9. Nah, I'm not going to make a lot of extra rules here. If you can pick up a 2x4 at your local hardware store and it's made of New Zealand Remu, then that's fair game. If you think that's construction grade timber, go for it. Cutting the 2x4 is fair game too. It's wood just like anything else. Cut it. Glue it. Drill holes in it. Just make something.
  10. I didn't specify wood per se. You got the right idea to use common building material. Generic 2x4. Notice that I also said make a playable "instrument" and I didn't specify a guitar.
  11. Well we've talked and talked about it. It's time for the rubber to meet the road. Today is February 11. Let's take 1 month and see what we can do with the lowly 2x4. Task: Build a playable instrument using a 2x4 (or as many of them as you need). You can make any kind of instrument that you like and use additional materials as needed (like a balsa fretboard), but you must use a 2x4 for the majority of the build. Above all else, have fun with the idea. Time limit: One Month. March 12th is the deadline and then we can all sit back and laugh at the results. Submitting entries: You can post your results here. Limit yourself to 4 pictures (just as in the GOTM) and tell us the vital statistics. Sound clips are optional but for extra brownie points, they are preferred. Get to work!
  12. I don't think acoustic is the idea. It could be, or it could have pickups and be electric. The idea of taking a Pine 2x4, which is probably the crummiest wood you could use, and turning it into something playable is more of how I interpret the idea. I'd love to do it anyway, contest or not, just to see if it really is a crappy as we all think it is. As cheap and readily available as 2x4s are, it would be a good chance to get some practice in on some cheap material. Hmmmm... MDF body with a 2x4 neck.
  13. It took me 8 days to the day to finish it. I bring you "The CIGANTOR" Hand carved Maple neck, neck-through construction 22 Frets 23 1/8" scale ACE hardware, po boy's TOM bridge Mid 1930's Birch or Spruce Corina cigar box Rosewood fiddle tuners with dot inlay. F-Holes Hand rubbed gunstock oil and wax finish. 4 strings tuned DGBD (like a 4 string banjo) You can't see it in the photo, but there's over 400 growth lines across the top of this!!!! I wanted Matt to know that he inspired me to build this one. It's the best sounding cigar box guitar I've made to date. And a sound clip will be here too. It sounds close to a mandolin rather than a banjo. Very strange. You'll see though. <edit> Soundclip added... Red Haired Cigar Box
  14. Good question. I suppose you could take the bull by the horns and lead the next mini-competition.
  15. I've trolled through the internet and have found a few 1st edition copies at 1/2 the price of the 2nd edition. Can anyone say that it's better to get one over the other considering the price? Yes, I'm cheap. If the 1st edition is good enough for half the price, I'd just as soon have that one. Suggestions?
  16. I got a response from the seller which said to the effect, 'oh, it must be a typo.' There was no mention that they were going to fix it.
  17. If those items actually sell at those prices, there has to be a money laundering scam going on. Take a look at the store view. There's a bunch of outragously over priced stuff. http://stores.ebay.com/WildBerry-Castle_W0...0QQftidZ2QQtZkm
  18. Thanks. I have finally designed a new Dragon cover that meets this standard. I went through a couple of designs that I liked, but they just didn't live up to this cover. I hope to complete the new Dragon this weekend. I'm also working on a wolf. Both the Eagle and the Dragon seem made for a PRS. There's an obvious connection I can make there. What about the Wolf? Do you just like them or does PRS make a wolfie inspired model?
  19. I sent the guy an email so we'll see if the price gets corrected. Even if it had Jimi Hendrix's spit on it, it wouldn't be worth that much.
  20. This guy must be on drugs! http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...IN_Stores_W0_IT
  21. Well, the sale is over. She's all boxed up and headed "down undah". I'm going to miss that little guitar. That is, until I get these other two built.
  22. It's not. When I said 'gigantor' in the GOTM entry thread I was refering to the size of the build pictorial (number of pictures, etc.), not the violin itself, which I just call 'violin'. I'd also like to thank everyone who has voted for me, looks like I may finally win a GOTM! Yep, and with a FIDDLE! I'm inspired by it in fact. I'm working on a new CBG called the "Cigantor". It'll be an entry in the next GOTM competition.
  23. BTW, Matt, Lex, why is the fiddle called "the gigantor?" Fiddle - what we rednecks call a violin.
