  1. was gonna post that earlier actually - just shows how versatile this shape can be
  2. also considering rerouting the neck pickup for a humbucker - the way nature intended
  3. maybe i am crazy - but i clearly like what a blackburst does to spalted tops (oh, and they are both GOTM winners )
  4. doesnt have to go down to the controls though - it wouldnt be as big as yours, which does work great with the shape but isnt the look i am going for i was actually considering how a bit of tort would look with this combo
  5. nah - this isnt getting the burst - as much as i do like the idea The neck will be stripped of its current finish, headstock veneered or sprayed in something dark - the rest of the maple will get a bit more of a tint than it currently has to warm it up a bit. Body will get a rosewood (more red mahogany then rosewood) stain on top only - then the whole body will be tru-oiled and waxed still not sure about the humbucker/single coil layout - looked better in my head, but i am wondering if I can improve matters with a middle pickup or some kind of scratchplate. or just get it finished and decide on that later
  6. or an original 1975 iceman (actually called artist 2663 till 1977ish) (try another pic)
  7. ok - here it is now. i think the white binding looked initially more striking but the black will make more sense once i have done the finish maybe chrome rings
  8. i will do a fireman at some point - its on the list. too late for this block of wood though
  9. so plain mahogany it will be - maybe with a darker tint to the top, but not black as originally intended. fairly sure its honduran
  10. had a change of plan - as is the case when i start things suddenly. basically i want this done quick as a bit of a revitalisation of my guitar building so i have decided i will use the neck shown above, rebind the body in black. humbucker bridge, single coil neck layout and i found a schaller hardtail roller bridge i will use. i did like the gretsch tailpiece but in the positions it looked good it would be quite close to the bridge and the high strings would snag controls will be volume for each pickup, master tone, 3-way pickup selector and a mini toggle to do something to the humbucker
  11. it wont be the end of the world - especially not with a solid finish. i wouldnt use it for that shape though - maybe save it for something that does fit you do have options - such as aligning the body with the centre line and using the offcuts to add the extra width needed (ok for extra width, not length), splitting it down the join and adding a stripe of something interesting or just buying a body blank the right size
  12. Swedish luthier - love the brown finish on this one - looks like a well worn pebble. i would probably loose the floyd and go for the same aesthetics on both pickups, polepeices or not rather than one of each RAD - very clean as always, nice to see a gloss one - just think that spalt could do with a little something else... which is why i ended up doing a couple of black bursts over spalted maple builds 3dognate - lovely factory quality looking build with a borg implant shoved on its ass. since this is mainly a beauty contest that thing lets it down - although i appreciate its a functional decision avenger63 - gets my vote for most improved. love the inlays, love the guitar. Finish could be a bit more consistent, like swede says their is the odd patch which could be down to the wood. could have been solved with a darker edge burst - but i like the colour as it is jessejames - nice woods and all... not sure you have taken full advantage of its set-neck construction, could have done something with that heel and it really does need a string through bridge... or at least the bolts trimming down on that one! crow - stunning top, nice colour choice for that. the white back doesnt do it for me and the wenge looks like it needs some oil - but that could be the bright white washing it out orgmorg - its almost a bit plain for one of yours - i think it needs some random old tat sticking to it Liking the neck join detail madhattr88 - this was second place for me, i would play it in a second. i think this design would make a nice semi or arch/carved top design
  13. ignore the worriers - it will look awesome with a clearcoat this piece of crotch walnut was very similar colour wet with spirits
  14. its 1 1/2" - tbh the blank was noticeably heavy and i was a bit worried about doing a iceman body from it, but its already starting to feel much more manageable . It will get a large control cavity and i think it will be just right although i am rebuilding an explorer i made back in the beginning soon which i stupidly did in 2" thick idigbo - it will get thinned down to 1 3/4" but also hollowed out and a new top added
  15. it wont be multicoloured hardware- i just grabbed the first parts i found that were not still in a packet the mahogany really is great, absolutely no figure, not even a bit of ribboning. Just completely consistent all the way through. Its a little on the heavy side as it has a lot of mineral in the grain, but great tap tone and the weight will be fine once it has a control cavity and pickup routes added
  16. nah, i know - i was just teasing! but for me the main problem with a glue less neck will be tolerance. any slop in the join will leave potential for movement and it not quite sitting right. but if it is all nice and tight any wood movement can change that. its either going to end up tighter or looser at some point i would also worry about loss of transmission between body & neck if the fit is not spot on
  17. one from the same year - the only times i have really done scarf accents before
  18. yeah, i just chucked the hardware on - but i think the guild tailpiece looks better a little closer and a little more angled the original paul stanleys had an angled tailpiece - at least the prototype did :? considering all options at the moment - most likely a sapelle neck... but i also have a nice piece of very purple purpleheart (from prostheta) and some maple lams which could work well if cut the right way. possibly with a RAD style highlighted scarf - ironic i describe it that way since the neck in the pictures above (made in 2004 iirc) has a wenge veneer in the scarf
  19. ah, got ya - i did do a firebird with 25.5" scale neck and that definitely felt a bit long like you describe.... not an issue for me normally but its noticeable when given to someone shorter
  20. not sure i need to worry too much about balance - i was even considering making it baritone if i did a new neck! the iceman shape isnt far off my vendetta design - certainly as far as strap position goes, never had any balance problems on them. . icemans are longer with a lot more wood behind the bridge so i think it would take a longer scale and still balance it was started on a whim this morning so i have not thought it all through yet
  21. i do have some black binding - be easy enough to redo that, maybe go for a dark top - but not quite black and make the headstock on the neck match when i bound the body i was thinking of this sort of look, but with white rather than cream binding - i will need to do a new neck for it if its going to work like that i did not want to factor in making a new neck just yet as i dont know how much time i have on my hands
  22. well since i found myself with little to do today i started thinking about the old stock mahogany body blank i had prepped a while back.... then i remembered i had an iceman template i had not used yet so a couple of hours later we have this I have a neck from one of my old guitars i might use on it - just not sure it matches well enough yet and not sure if to go string through body or with this guild style tailpiece the neck is a beautiful piece of birdseye maple with mac ebony fretboard and double binding - just wondering if the black bound neck matches the white bound body or not :? i may yet just make a new neck for it the plan for the body is a black oil top with natural oiled back and sides
  23. i actually quite like it. if that extra bit was incorporated in a more graceful way than the square route i think i could really like it
