  1. In addition to the cool guitar content of hyunsu's pictures, I have to remark that his photography is some of the best on this list (westhemann's shoes not withstanding ). Hyunsu's pictures are always clear and bright.
  2. Yes! Scalloping = sweet frictionless phalangeally blissful vibrato !
  3. Hmm... if you're touching fretboard when playing, you're pressing too hard. It's not "proper" to press that hard, scalloped or not. Well anyway, scalloping forces you not to press too hard so in a way it "teaches" you to play with a light touch. I forgot to mention the benefits. For me, there is a lot less friction (with the fretboard.) I guess you have to try it to really understand the benefit. By trying it I mean for a good amount of time (weeks?,) not just trying a friend's for 10 minutes and saying "This is weird, I don't like it"
  4. May I suggest instead of 3" lengths, you consider 6" lengths. Some people like to pre-radius the wire before installing... with either that funky can opener looking thing from stewmac or the fret bender jig that Brian made. It might be easier with 6" lengths than 3".
  5. Over 80 years?!?! You must be very old!
  6. I wonder if some sort of router (dremel or 1/4" trim router) with a specialized jig could be used for this.
  7. How well/easily do scalloped necks accept refrets?
  8. Hmm... it's been awhile for this thread. Is jrhilton around? Any pictures of your friend's guitar?
  9. What scares me about the speedloader is the $11 US per set price tag plus the lack of single 1st string availability. The final fear is what if it doesn't take off... no more strings!!! I think floyd made a mistake of closing the string to Dean Markley only. They should have kept it open like Steinberger did with the double ball-end string. Who knows, that might change.
  10. I used to just slide a piece of paper towel under the strings up to the first fret... but of course I did this just to play around with. It wouldn't be practical on stage.
  11. Girly or not, it's as valid a style of playing as any. Yeah, drown/dampen out open strings. I never had a fender bass but my old rick's bridge did have a dampening device there.
  12. D'oh! Spoke too soon. There are close up pics on Michael's website here. Hmm... and the price went up.
  13. That's probably why they don't show close up pictures of it... because of people like you who want to make their own .
  14. I think you can buy them from Michael. It was around $70 US last I checked.
  15. Ooh! Cool! -- frustrated drummer turned guitarist.
  16. Carbon fiber or phenolic? Steiberger, et al necks have phenolic FB's. I used to have one of the Kramer Aluminum necked guitars back in the 80's. It too had a phenolic FB. I had no clue... I scalloped it ... did one section... point of no return. Man, that was ugly!
  17. Yup. I'm still have my 10+ year old files... shows you how much re-fretting I do .
  18. No problem. Did you see the prices for diamond files?!?!?!
  19. I updated the SS fretting tips thread with some pictures. I expressed my concern about the cost of diamond files to Kevin. He went to the trouble of doing a guitar with non-diamond files to show it can be done. The pictures are of the process.
  20. Added pictures of Custom LP... done with non-diamond files.
  21. Everyone'll have an opinion.... Some things to consider when deciding between a tube vs. solid state POWER amp. It is my opinion that tube sounds best but it matters much less in a power amp vs. the pre-amp. If you crank a tube power amp to overdrive (in addition to the tube pre-amp) than that is sweetness itself... but how often will you play that loud? You lose some of the tonal advantages that tubes have vs. SS (for the power amp) at lower volumes. Also consider replacement costs for tubes. Pre-amp tubes will last 2+ years but power amp tubes can last as short as 6 months. Check prices for replacement tubes and you'll see what I mean. Tube pre-amp + solid-state power amp = happy ears (and wallet)
  22. Heh! "Red tolex sounds best."
  23. michael bolton? "How am I supposed to live without you?" Yeah, I know... bad joke.
  24. I made an edit above... the bit about the concern of the cost of diamond files.
