Hey, I was going to attempt an archtop as my next project. Was doing some research and came across this. http://www.edromanguitars.com/custom/custom_prs.htm I have been reading the Benedetto book as well and am wondering why PRS dosen't bend their sides? Is it because the PRS are more electric based guitars and need a more stability to put up with the extreme vibrations. I believe the big block 7 pics down on the site I listed is a combo bridge plate/sound post. You guys think its a good idea to carve the entire top plate like a benedetto (not like the inside carve shown on the PRS) and have the bridge plate/sound post connect the top and bottom plates to allow a stop tail bridge to be installed and give the guitar more stability?

Hey, Getting ready to finish my guitar, I read a lot of the posts and read through reranch. I am trying to get something close to this finish Finish Would you guys recommend using a spray or a wipe on. Also if I do a spray do you have to seal between colors like reranch says?

Has anyone had any success making the cam or camless clamps similar to the ones on stew mac? If so how did you do it? What I am mainly looking for is where could I find the flat metal rods with the gooves on the edge to hold the top or movable brace of the clamp in place.

Hey, I'm building an acoustic and am at the point where I need to cut the channel for the binding. Does anybody have any ideas on what to use to cut the channel? I planned on using my router with a rabbeting bottom bearing bit but I can't find any bearings that will allow for the correct width of cut. I really don't feel like spending the 50-60 bucks for stew mac's bit and bearing. Anybody got any advice. Thanks, Mike

Hey thanks for the advice guys. I wound up using some grease cutter called purple power and some sand paper for the table and a wire brush for the cast iron. Taped it up last night and am going to prime it when I get home from work.

Hey, I just bought am old delta rockwell 4" jointer. It works fine but definitly looks like its age. Anyone know the best way to clean up all the metal. I am going to re paint all the areas which were painted but the areas on the table and the fence which were long ago a shiny metal are now a rustic grimey brown. Anyone know how I could clean this up? Thanks, Mike

I just did my first refret on my strat. Everything came out alright until I tried to level the frets. I kept trying to get them all perfectly even but kept screwing up. I took off a bunch of the frets. Luckily I was using Jumbo wire so there is still a good amount of wire there but I left a really flat top and still havent gotton them perfectly even. I used a sharpening stone to level but just re read one of the tutorials and found that one of the guys used his radius block and 400 grit sand paper to level the frets. Is this a better way to go? I also noticed that the low e side is more uneven(un level) then the high e side. I am getting to the point where I am thinking I should judt re do the whole thing. I need all the help I can get right now. Also does anyone know where I could get a crowning file cheaper then stew macs? Thanks, Mike

Thanks for all the advice. Ill give the rosewood dust and glue a shot. I used a crappy pair of fret pullers when I pulled the frets out. Thats probably why I got so many chips.

I just attempted my first defret for a refretting I am going to do. It went pretty well but I did get some chips on the fret board. What should I use to fill in the chips? Also is it possible not to get any chips or do you always get some? Thanks, Mike

I just took some measurements of a PRS at a local guitar shop. The guys at the store were really cool about it. Then I found a pic online that was pretty much headon and resized that pic to the propper height and width I got from my measurements. I seperated that pic into four sections (top left, top right, bot left, bot right) and printed out each sectioin and taped them back together. I then cut it out taped it onto a piece of plexi glass and cut out the plexiglass. I found the center line and started filling in the position of the cavities. I have a bunch of measurements from a prs if you want them.

Hey I was if the scale for a 21 fret strat neck was 25 1/2? I bought a late 60's early 70's strat neck for which I am going to make a body and just wanted to make sure of the correct scale. Thanks, Mike

I think my piece is Eastern. I bought it in New Hampshire and I recall the guy saying it was cut locally. I am going to use rosewood for the Fretboard. Think that is stout enough? -

That's my dilemma, shoudl I take the risk. I just don't feel like giving stew mac anymore of my money. Are those carbon rods available at hardware stores or someplace like a hardware store. -

By curly I meant flamed. Its a nice dense heavy piece. I thought about the carbon rods but only wanted to put them in if I had to. Just wanted to get an overall feeling if I should put in the rods? -
Hey everyone, I got a large piece of curly maple that I wanted to use for a neck. The piece isn't qtr sawn and I was only going to use a stew mac hot rod truss rod in the neck. Will this be allright or will it be too prone to bending? Plus the piece is a little warped. Anyone got any advice on flattening one side. I would put it through a planer but it already was put through small 12 inch planner and that didn't fix the warp. I was thinking of running it across a jointer or I have access to a industrial planner which I thought might work too. Anyone got any advice? Thanks, Mike

Hey also check the phone book in your area for any mills. I called up a mill in my area. The guy makes doors and windown frames. He sells me body blanks and big thick neck planks for 20 bucks each. Also lets me use his shop, band saw, planner etc.

Check out the site below. The Martin Sims section. The guy talks about how he uses some kind of base coat which moulds the decals. What do you think this is? And what the hell does he mean the decal goes off after 30 seconds? Hey we should start playing the name game. You have to say a word about yourself that starts with the same letter as your first name. It's more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Mine would be Mustard Mike cause my name is mike and I like mustard. Especially goudons spicy brown! I live in MA, 27 years old, Used to build web sites in NYC but instead moved up to MA to be with girlfriend and have become an art teacher. Had to go back to school to be a teacher which is taking up a lot of my guitar building time. Trying to build a PRS type and Hendrix copy right now. Going slow very slow.
