Ugh.. I had my Yamaha PAC112 as first electric guitar. Honestly, I didn't enjoy it very much. Although I learned alot for about a year, I sold it to another beginner. Like Godin said, buy a cheap used guitar. And don't go for the looks. I suggest you take someone who knows about guitar and tour around the shop or even eBay. Um.. by someone who knows about guitar I mean probably someone who knows what kinds of brands are out there, how each guitar sounds like, what kinds of music they're suited for, what kind of necks are on the guitar, on top of his/(her) head. But not the salesperson.. I got majorly screwed over... not because Yamaha's are bad.. but just because.. It's not the "best guitar for beginners".. and I believed him.. me so naive.. peace out -IR

Does anybody know a site or reference where I can find history of Jackson guitars? Such as what guitars were there before Fender, what models were discontinued, how to read their labellings, etc. Any clue?? I'm trying to dig as much as I can about Kellys, seems that the Std, XLR, Performers were all discontinued and when was KE3 introduced, and level of quality in KE1,2,3,4,7, those kinds of stuff Thx, -IR

JEMs.. are rare.. relative to LPs!!!! Too many kids these days going for the "looks" but I did it too.. *glances at the LP* Okie.. I'm not exactly sure how JEM was made, I never even touched one.. I know Toronto doesn't carry them unless you order it... But I do know.. how drop-tops are done, which overall gives the same appearance: without pickguard I'm gonna use LP as an example, but I think JEM might be close to using the same method.. (except JEMs don't have drop tops..) (Correct me if I'm wrong) LPs generally use mahogany and maple (quilted/flamed) on top The top maple tends to be about 1/2" at most But before these 2 are glued together All the wire channels and pickup cavities are routed Then the top is glued, then the cavity for pots are routed from the back, then they use the LONG shafted pots that go through the tiny holes you drilled on the top. Kinda like this except this is DEEP neck set so ignore the long route for the neck Not the best example, but take a look at what I mean by drop top If you notice, the guy drilled the tiny holes I'm talking about and he has a huge cavity on the back and the pots go through there, and you don't need that ugly pickguard thats always hiding those nice figures I highly recommend you to do some search and/or go to "In Progress And Finished" section and wander around.. I love the JEM, but its too edgy to me, I like curvier guitars, like the aerofoil Satch model, Carved tops such as LP or PRS, Gib ES355, Kelly's an exception Apparently not enough, eh?? Wow thats a really clean job, and all original parts. Looks great, don't mind if I copy it, or attempt to (this summerr.. argg..) Can you tell me few specs of it? Neck Angle, Headstock angle, Set neck, Neck through, # of frets (I'm pretty sure that's 24..), and body wood? Or any of these you remember. I might actually need the specs for neck angle and headstock angle, or would 2degree for neck and 9degrees for headstock be ok? Oh and did you hand carve that?? or cnc? Thx, -IR

I think he's trying to put a 24 3/4" scale neck into a 25.5".. by cutting the neck's heel... I thought this was impossible..? Did I miss something? -IR

Any idea how you're going to carve all those contours? Hand carve? Nice design btw. Personally I would buy a router before anything seeing that you plan to convert HH to HSS and cavities And is that s'pose to be Floyd trem system on the drawing? (The big rectangle shaded area where the bridge is s'pose to be)? Also, if you're buying tools.. Try getting a name brand used like.. off eBay. Or at least do a search, who knows there might be ones available on your local area. This is quite common for shopmachines Good luck! Again, I love the design. -IR

I'm sry.. but I just love Floyds too much.. being a huge fan of guitarists like Satriani, Vai, Alex Lifeson, Petrucci, EVH, Dimebag (love those squeals) and I probably will put 1 for every guitar I make from now on... or even when I get the chance of modifying something. Vintage or even the floating tremolos only have dive range of 4 steps, but Floyd or Edges can do about 8 and plus bend up about 4 steps, or may be different in each setup. Anywho, the point is that they're much more versatile. And if you listen to both of them, the dives or bends on Floyd/Edge are much smoother than the vintage style ones. And I'm sure if Hendrix had one of these, he'd go wild(er) and probably rethink about setting his guitars on fire It has more functions than just wider range of bends.. Such as the fine tuners and sustain. But if you think its that ugly.. I guess you can think of it as a tradeoff.. between the looks and its functions. Agreed, Floyd rose may not suite many playing styles.. such as.. I can't really imagine Coldplay or.. Arcade Fire using Floyd.. or even 2nd guitarists on many metal bands who usually just plays power/slash/bar chords in the background most of the time... Isn't that because if you have a Floyd Rose without a locking nut, the string angle in the headstock might create more tension and might break the strings more often? -IR

Thx, I was forgetting about those They aren't officially a PRS, But I'll take it. I did consider that being my first project long time ago, before I found out that Grizzly doesn't ship outside USA. I ended up with a Saga... but I have to say.. for $80US and not knowing a clue about building guitars/finishing, I thought it was a good investment. I think the "wierd curve" looks pretty sexy and a modern edge. imo Speaking of Grizzly guitars, Does anyone know (They have a Grizzly store on eBay and Amazon.com) if any of the stores ship outside the States? Yea.. you're right.. it's a failure by design.. I didn't even see the nut on that one. I used up all my resources now.. so I guess I will just have to believe that there is a PRS with Floyd from Chris (verhoevenc) or.. was the artist's name Jim Reed? I found this.. but I don't think it's right.. Nobody can get a PRS under $500... Harmony Central It seems that PRS overall is not that experimental On the side, I also looked for any PRS with more rare or exotic woods (i.e. purpleheart, wenge, etc) I would get alder, swamp ash, but no fancy stuff. Forget what I said below.. here's a much simpler version. As I learned from physics class and so on.. Force=mass*acceleration Vibration if you think about it is basically an oscillation, motion of going back and forth with an origin in the middle. (This is an acceleration because the motion or it vibrating is like a sin wave. Speed is constantly changing.) Force.. (although in here, it's in the form of energy, but not getting into that for simplicity reasons ) Force is distributed equally through the body and neck. Where body has more mass, its acceleration is lower. Where the neck is less mass, therefore, more acceleration. Therefore more vibration; thus, more drag force, which energy is lost through air, heat, etc. I'unno.. I tried.. Hope that helps from technical point of view. (asdg89auwp3oirjsdkf I wrote a paragraph then the libralian kicked me off for write "e-mail"...) So here I am at the other end of the library Basically.. (recall..) Your body vibrates too, but very little to almost no difference and since the body is in contact with a bigger mass/denser object (you the player) it has insignificant loss of sustain through vibration or drag force which accounts for all air resistance or since oscillation isn't perfect its "energy" is lost through air/heat/etc. (of course if Newtonian physic was perfect we would have the guitar sustain for a year if we wanted to) But the neck loses much more sustain, because well first of all it is lighter, and it is s'pose to share as much vibration as in the body as the neck. So the "energy" input or "force" is the same but different mass make it that the neck experiences more oscillation as to say the distance it travels when vibrating is lot longer than the body. Therefore it experiences more loss through "drag force" which is basically all the force that is applied to in our real-flawful-world physics. So the energy transfer is not as efficient and therefore... the neck loses lot more sustain. Also, putting a metal chunk helps alot because it's Denser, and of course heavier. (i'll edit this when i get home.. not a good explanation... probably because there are ppl waiting for this computer..) -IR

Well, you seem be Fully aware. Then it's good. For the body, as you mentioned, it will be up-right (am I right?) like.. a cello or double-bass.. So I was thinking why not add a stand or some kind of extension under it so you can play it standing up other than.. maybe squatting down. Just so you can add a little more plability factor into it. As skills go, I think it won't be a problem, hearing about what you did with the Ford Also, if it's gonna be up-right, why stick to the regular 2-D boring guitar shape? My suggestion would be.. make the dragons kind of swirl around the neck pocket? Of course, you would need some gap to let your hand plag through the high frets. And also the wings could kinda spread out? So you can kinda get the 3-D effect. I think that would be cool. (And also add a little monetary value too.. and of course sentimental value too.) Trully a 1 of a kind guitar. And I mean trully a ONE OF A KIND -IR

I don't know after you build it you'll actually play it.. It seems awesome and really gorgeous But its just that maybe after you built it, with all those details as dragons horns, scales, all those, and its extra big body, you might think of it as more of a prize... then an actual instrument.. It doesn't seem practical.... Not an expert on psychology, but I think you know what I'm saying. Good luck! -IR
