  1. bouzouki = mandocello I love the mandolin sound. My two favorite rock mando songs are "Battle of Evermore" (Led Zep) and "Losing My Religion" (REM). Very different tunes. I'll be building one at some point, but probably a mandocello which is basically an extension of the mando to larger scale and lower range.
  2. I'm too late! PCs just plain suck for digital audio compared to a Mac, mainly because you're stuck with Windows OS (and run the risk of wearing out the reset button). Mac OS X (I have 10.3) is hands-down the most stable OS on any computer ever. I believe that new Macs now ship with GarageBand (or you can get it for ~$50, even cheaper on edu discount), which is dead simple to use with a USB or Firewire digital audio interface. GarageBand was a direct result of Apple's purchase of Emagic last year. If you're ever wanting to record multiple tracks simultaneously (i.e. in a live situation), on Macs the Firewire path is direct to the CPU. On PCs the Firewire path shares the same databus as all the USB stuff, resulting in a throughput bottleneck that Macs just don't have. Finally...Emagic's Logic 6 Pro is now available through the Apple Store web site. It sells for $999 but the edu discount brings it down to $299 For which you get: A**-kicking audio & MIDI recording (unlimited # of tracks) 24 bit/96k capability a bunch of really good effects (EQs, compressors, delays, sub-bass, you name it) a bunch of really good software synths (they used to come $eparately) mastering and burn-to-CD or MP3 capability more features than the mere mortal can comprehend in a lifetime For mastering I don't even use regular monitors. I take my Mac (mine's a laptop), route the output of my audio interface right into my car stereo, and just master in my car. If it then sounds good on the home stereo too (which is does ~80% of the time, the low end is the trickiest), you're done. Burn it! More expensive, but well worth it.
  3. Nice deal! Does this mean REM is broken up?
  4. Tarded.... And tarded again.... Retarded. Now show me that cheese wizz......
  5. The Fender Jazzmaster body is just cut-down from the Jazz Bass.
  6. P...P...P...P...PAINTING ???!!!!! I hope you mean "finishing"....with something transparent...to show off that spalt.... (**thinks back to all those people who take a nice brick house and paint it white**)
  7. That's what I was thinking, neck twirl! But you're in for some serious rash with the wrong strap...
  8. Sorry...should be USACG (USA Custom Guitars). It is a great company (the owner Tommy is a super cool guy with great service) with great product and lots of available options at no upcharge. That particular forum doesn't see a whole lot of traffic, they are more uptight about a lot of stuff, but it is good for certain things. "Fullerplast" was a guy who posted there also looking for data in guitarology (the "science" of guitars), in much the same style. He got run after ~8 posts... NWTH (no wish to hijack)... I think it is safe to assume that, all else being equal, thinner = more resonance (be it wood or finish); balance that against wood type, strength, weight, bridge type, pups, etc etc. Huge parameter space (which is I guess why you can get so many different sounds from a guitar).
  9. Oh yeah, nice job on the ES thinline!
  10. This is eerily reminiscent of a vile exchange on the USAGC forum awhile back... rhodes56 and 'fullerplast'...separated at birth? or the same guy? I am both scientist and guitarist; you won't find much science when it comes to things like finish thickness and sound (not to mention frequency response of different wood types, fingerboard woods, guitar mass, etc etc). Fact is, it is not difficult at all to envision the right tests to check such things, but most people in the best position to do those tests are in the luthery business more for enjoyment than anything else, and are mostly surviving on a shoestring and so can't afford to engineer and perform the proper tests (even if they wanted to). Somewhere back in the Gibson or Fender archival file cabinets there are probably some manila folders with some of that data, but just go ahead and try to get someone to find it for you. Just like the left brain ain't the right, opinion is not evidence. But the opinion of experienced luthiers and players is all you got so don't knock it.
  11. Two sets of vintage Kluson Deluxe tuners just recently went on the 'Bay for ~$180 (each set).
  12. Oh man......if only money were no object..... I've never built an archtop, but i KNOW for a fact that I'd spend a lot more than this in mistakes just to get to this point. wow
  13. Or you could install the frets first while the back of the neck is still square. Then contour the back of the neck last....?
  14. Nice work, I like it! Now go out and get a regular gig so you can afford to hire a maid!
  15. I believe that smaller chambers will not provide as full of a semi-hollow sound as large chambers.
  16. That's a really good start; you could just leave it like that, or now try to smooth out the contours. I saw one tutorial (here?) where you take a flat body blank, draw contour lines on it (like a map) in the shape of your carve, which represent lines of constant "depth" below the flat top. Then go around with a drill press and drill a bunch of holes using the depth stop, shallow near the middle, deeper at the edge, following the "depth contour lines". These holes are then your guide as to how much wood to remove during carving.
  17. Print out some flame on decal paper and apply. FOTO FLAME !!
  18. Now: '81 LP Custom (cherry sun; I owned this in high school, what a chick magnet!) '94 Fender MIM Strat (black w/maple neck) 12-string Strat (yellow '02 Tom Delonge hardtail body, '67 Fender Shenandoah neck) Ovation acoustic (tobacco sun) MIJ Jazz Bass IV knock-off (relic...) Digitech RP-1 (NO TREMOLO ) Morley volume Cry Baby wah Yamaha G100-210 Then there's: Alesis drum machine Yamaha Clavinova MOTU 896-MacG4TiPowerbook-Logic6 for OSX (this combo rox) Later: chambered Strat double-neck (active proj) travel guitar w/ removable neck (active proj) '50 Fender Broadcaster relic repro (mental proj) ES-175 thinline semi-hollow repro (mental proj) 5-string neck-thru bass (mental proj) A/E mandolin (I'll prob just buy one) Behringer V-amp2 (just for the TREMOLO ) Probably Never: enough $cratch corporate sponsor a 100% finished original song enough time for any of this
  19. What Wes said... i) loose truss rod ii) loose carbon rods iii) neck blank with backbow iv) don't want to sand and re-slot Add 'em all up, and the best way to go is to remove the fretboard and try again.
  20. Morello is a riff monster...the Machine is definitely his niche.
  21. John McLaughlin reigns supreme. Another vote for Johnny Mac
  22. Oh man...you can have great guitars and vocals, but without a good drummer your band SUX!
  23. Just stumbled on this thread today...wow Jehle, you are THE MAN and deserve everlasting kudos for all this effort. I hope you come out of this right-side-up financially. he's still at it And the kicker; to have heard the 'good news' and ignored it...I'll bet there's an extra special place in hell for people like this.
  24. The water-based Minwax polycrylic is actually a bit less clear (milky) than the regular Minwax polyurethane, although you need really thick coats to tell. A thin dye coat would be fine, then you could clear with the regular poly and buff out. If you're using dye+water, you might need to sand flat again as the water will raise the wood grain.
