  1. Thats the "mood" I got from that video, the urge to go as fast as possible, putting no care in the instruments in order to gain that speed advantage. But you still got to admit, the tools where awesome Call me old fashioned....but in a just under 7 minute soundtrack the only guitar playing happens between 5:12 and 5:34...the rest is just utter wank ! , Great vid though...im glad to see fender took so much care and attention to build any of their guitars that i own? ( NOT !)
  2. Heehee Great Guitar Dan! Love Wenge, we built a bass out of a one piece body and a wenge neck. A little heavy but has a great sound and a look that makes you stare at it. Thank you mate...id love to see a pic of that bass sometime? Light guitars are for wimps i say ! ( jOKE) ;-)
  3. Thanks mate . By the way....the guitar is christened "The pheasant"... Now im not sure if you have pheasants in the states? its a game bird?..I built the guitar in the country in scotland....i had the two bookmatched pieces of wenge veneer sitting on the bench and a guy called billy walked in and said "Do you know what? for a minute i thought that was a pheasant feather sitting there"...hence the name. there is also a bit of a tongue twister about being a "Pheasant plucker" ( pleasant ****er.)...and as you pluck guitar it makes me the Pheasant Plucker....man have i gone on a bit here? ok im going. ;-)
  4. Link schmink...we're talking marketing here, kiddo. Get that photo in front of people's faces --hey no kidding, that headstock came out great. Ahhh you meant have it as one of the 4 main pics? really? you sure? hmmmm ok.
  5. WOW i didnt even know there was a thread discussing GOTM until just now !!....I dont expect any votes as i entered it very very late in the game....Ill add that pic of the headstock...i thought i had but i must have doubled up on a pic...thanks for the advice mate ;-) Good luck everyone....yours all make mine look pretty poor...that green thing is very radical! Dan Dude the pic is there...its on the linked pics at the bottom of the post ;-)
  6. Hang on? is this another one? spalted? flame? curly? whats happening to my eyes? too much masturbating ive gone blind i tell thee?.... you like a point or two dont you mate?...nice
  7. I want a spalted coffin its been decided !...too many points for me but stunning work my friend !...im a huge allmans fan !
  8. Ah what the heck...putting your first ever build ( From 3 lumps of timber to what you see here in 5 days ) in for guitar of the month is dumb right? but its all a bit of fun....and i fancy a battle of the wenge guitars ! ;-) Ok ...ill keep it simple ( like the guitar)...I wanted a change from the flamey, curly, deep laquered, stained maple so have opted for the less is more, understated approach....bringing your focus to the stylish ( imho)chrome pick up surrounds and hardware. The guitar is pretty much set neck les paul standard spec 24 3/4 scale length. Although body is slightly thinner to counter the heavy wenge cap. Body Les paul standard shape, Flame Meranti back, carved WENGE cap. More comfortable heel, body join carve , Danish oiled finish Neck Mahogany neck, Ebony fingerboard, MOP dot markers, wide fat gibson style frets, wenge veneer to headstock face. stewmac trusrod , quite a bit smaller outline of les paul headstock with small gotoh machines all in chrome. Danish oiled silky finish.....lovely. Hardware All chrome, 60's telecaster style flat top knobs moved closer to playing position than normal les paul to help with volume swells, chrome arched bottom to match the carve better pick up rings, chrome T.O.M bridge and stop tail piece, chrome 3 way switch . push / pull tone pots to split the humbuckers to single coils. , Chrome strap lock. Pick ups Calibrated matched pair of BAREKNUCKLE Black Dogs..hand scatterwound humbuckers with coil splits. open black design. and thats about it....enjoy the pics ( sorry for those who have already seen this in the finished work thread) ;-) If anyone knows of other wenge capped les pauls id love to see? ....it rocks by the way....with a mid range growl ! http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/w3.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/w4.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/bil...le/PIC_0007.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/bil...le/PIC_0002.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/w01.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/w6.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/bil...le/PIC_0001.jpg
  9. This wouldn't be the Baileys course would it? Might be ;-)
  10. ah .....you mean the pic of me carving right? ...your too kind ha ha
  11. It was on that street with all the other guitar shops...the one I'm talking about has a couch in the front, and a fireplace...and a couple dozen Gibsons...and the LP Jr. hanging in a place of honor above the counter... Can anyone point me to a thread detailing the oil finish process from start to finish? Yes that is DENMARK STREET otherwise known in musician circles as "Tin pan Alley"...most stars shop in the street for vintage gear,. The shop you mention is my favourite, called Vintage and Rare, its a beautiful shop with leather sofas crammed with vintage fenders and gibsons, it was open by two young lads as far as i remember and has a wall smothered in signatures of all the a list stars/guitarists who have been there.....bastards...i so want that shop ! http://www.vintageandrareguitars.com/index...t_us&open_nav=0 as for the oiling.....id like to say i didnt do any sanding with oil etc....it was just all sanded super smooth then oiled, wiped off, oiled again in morning and that was it...just danish , no wax etc...although it was a 5 day course so maybe the oiling part can be done more detailed....wenge is a pretty open grain and could benefit the grain filling idea so thanks for whomever posted the oiling instructions for my future use.
  12. For two scratches? Couldn't do it myself...but then, there's nothing I admire more than a well-played, nicely scratched and scuffed guitar... When I was in London a few weeks ago, I went into a store with an amazing collections of vintage guitars --including a 50s era LP Jr, of course. After that, I went into a store with new guitars...all those shiny, flawless guitars...left me cold. I know the feeling...Im building new guitars to fund my obsession for scratched and battered vintage machines ! ;-) Was the shop in london in denmark street? sounds like "vintage and rare" or "Andys guitars" both amazing places. Oh my god thats shockingly bad and to think how many of these i have owned...im tempted to bandsaw them all in half so i can see but im not that daft or rich ha ha I simply wipe about a #2 cut (I think...about 1 parts shellac to 3 parts alcohol by eyeball volume; gonna do proper french polish soon and pay more attention) with...a paper towel. I use dewaxed blonde, mixed from flakes, but Zinnser Seal Coat should do the trick as well. Wiping might lead to blurring if you do colours, but shellac should be spray-able without too much hassle (just clean out the gun well afterwards...it's sticky stuff). Shellac's cheap, non-toxic (the solvent is, but not too bad), so I like it. Most of my instruments aren't stained, or are a combination of stain and tinted lacquer, so a fair amount of experience with direct staining is scrap pieces/tests. That's looking very, very nice. Loving it. I loved it before...i want to marry it now ! looking great man...im following this thread for sure love it ;-)
  13. Thanks...its very comfortable but i have to hold my hands up...this part was marks way ( the guy that ran the course) i probably would have just done the normal gibson style join had he not given me this option but now i shall always do something similar, maybe even more sleeker Hi mate ...yes very familiar..great minds think alike. im a big fan of chrome or satin pick up surrounds ( not gold though) ...ok firstly YES it is my first build...i built it in 5 days on a course !...the wenge cap sounds good but as you will know its a very mid range wood ( hence why used on a lot of basses) so pick up choice is the key which i got a bit wrong...i chose bareknuckle black dogs as im a massive zep fan and figured these are based on a pagey sound...which they are but are a very mid range pick up...that and the wood makes the whole thing playable but too middy for me so they will be changed for a brighter pick up. I havent weighed it and dont have scales but yes its heavy...i should think pretty much as heavy as my les paul standard even though it has a thinner body...( i quite like heavy guitars never understood all this...ultra light this and that and light wood etc) i like to feel them round my neck...but can understand some people prefer not to have a hunch back by the time they are 35 ;-) As long as you're using photobucket, you can post thumbnails instead (check off the photos you want to use, go to the bottom of the page and chose 'generate html etc' --that will give you links to past directly). As for the oil finish...you've pretty much confirmed my decision to go with oil from now on. Looks great--did you wax it too? I have kind of fixed the photo thing if i get time ill try and change them to thumbnails... Oil rocks....of course the argument is that it also lets the wood breathe and sing giving better tone...i just love the lovely smell when you open the case ;-) No wax....just a bit of lemon oil on the fingerboard and danish oil on the rest of the guitar Wenge is lovely...when i was doing the carve i was told its very very hard to work but having never done a carve before i knew no different and found it a breeze to be honest...ill probably be shocked when i next carve something easier....a point i should make is wenge is highly toxic so a mask / respirator should be worn when working it. To be honest i was going for a look more than anything...i wanted a rosewood les paul ( like the famous rosewood tele that george harrison had made and allegedly a rosewood start was built for hendrix but got lost) or at least a rosewood cap...this wasnt possible so wenge was the next dark grain wood i could find...i just wanted a real dark wood cap to contrast the chrome hardware...i think i nailed it. Until someone proves me wrong i havent ever seen a wenge capped les paul...i like to be different. Someone said to me the guitarist from golden earring had a similar guitar built but ive yet to see pics of it? and cool...thanks for the headsup about meranti...im just going on what i was told...mahogany family...which you have corrected ...to be honest it seems pretty similar in look and weight so im cool with it...and i was lucky to find a nice flame in mine !
  14. if someone can tell me how i delete a post that ****ed up ill be greatful? or if the moderator or whoever runs this site can do it for me? cheers
  15. Thanks...yes im not a fan of BLING on guitars...this would look sickly / too much with gold hardwear for example. Although i am a fan of zemaitis guitars with all the pearl and metalwork..but somehow they are still cool and tasteful The oil finish is fine for me as i have no stain or colour anywhere just natural woods...i didnt even think about that point when i posted on your thread, i guess to protect the sunburst you will need a tougher finish. the oil used was danish oil. as for the neck angle ill be honest i cant remember off the top of my head as i built it a year back but its based on plans for a les paul standard and feels the same as all my gibsons so whatever they have is what i have on this. I built the whole guitar from 3 lumps of wood in 5 days straight on a course i did....im currently trying to set up my own workshop so i can start building again
  16. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/w6.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/w1.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/w01.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/bil...le/PIC_0007.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/bil...le/PIC_0004.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/bil...le/PIC_0001.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/127.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/129.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/075.jpg http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f303/billbuckle/069.jpg
  17. dammit how do i delete this post i posted twice by accident one with pics and this one without?
  18. Hi guys...this is my first build submission here but after seeing GODINS wenge guitar posted and seeing some similarities i thought id post some pics of the wenge capped les paul i built last year! The guitar is all les paul standard spec except for the wenge cap and slightly thinner body to reduce weight of the heavy wenge cap ...so basically mahogany neck, maranti ( mahogany family) body and carved wenge cap ( all done by hand)..me and godin must think alike as he chose the same metal pick up surrounds as me, switch and even ebony fingerboard...my only change to the trad les paul set up ( i own a few gibsons) was reversing of the vol and tone control parallelagram shape so the volume sits closer to the playing area for volume swells ( i have small hands) although saying this on future les paul builds i will revert back as i dont like change too much . Pick ups are currently bareknuckle "black dogs" although these are to be changed as the black dog is a mid range boosted pick up...and until i built it i didnt realise quite how mid range wenge is so i will be changing them soon to give me more treble ( for another bareknuckle model as they rock !)....they are tapped on the pull pots ( tone controls) and because of the mid range i find myself playing with both humbuckers tapped to sound more like single coils/trebly which wasnt my plan Hope you like the pics if i can work out how to insert them ? Headstock wenge veneer is a bit rushed needs more sanding and oiling whole guitar is oiled by the way no lacquer.
  19. Im so passionate about beautiful woods i would be happy to just have slabs of it around the house to look at , feel, smell etc.... good luck with this build its nice when i see people building from trees basically as apposed to kits or pre made this that and the other...not saying the other way is wrong just saying i like to watch proper wood to guitar builds on here ;-)
  20. "not bad, not bad at all! I'm not a big fan of 'bling' on guitars so I'm not a fan of the strat copy" I have to agree with this...i really dont like gold full stop on guitars, people, girls, house decor, lexus car badges etc etc....its just too tarnished as the chav/pikey ( gypsey) culture here in the uk and looks cheap...id much prefer to see the strat with nickel or chrome hardware....saying all that...BOTH guitars regardless of my taste have a great pro look and top finish well done. The lynch "hair rock" era guitar made me come over all nostalgic....so much so ill be looking for some dokken re issues on ebay...for now ill have to make do with my cinderella and white lion cd's ;-)
  21. Id be very happy to pay over $100 or even pay £100 to be able to decal 39 guitars to that pro level ! Id also be interested in more contact details or website for them thanks ;-) ( i hope they will ship to the uk?) If anyone knows a uk company that can do a similar job i would be v interested
