  1. Warmoth is a great place to start. I'm glad you took the advice. Most Of Warmoths guitars are based on alredy tried and true styling. I always look for a long horn on the top of the guitar. With the strap pin located on the longer horn it is most always a well balanced guitar.
  2. I'm not really sure. I imagine the tone would be a little more mellow in the hollow body. Pickup choice will make a big difference too. Here is another place to look for bodies and necks. I'm partial to this company due to great service and top quality parts. Here What type of music do you play?
  3. Unfortunately I can only answer a few of your questions. No a vintage solid body Strat is not going to sound like a hollow body Strat or vice versa on the Tele. Yes the two guitars sound completely different. Hollow or not they will sound different. If you want vintage sound stay with the solid body. Strats sound more quack like in tone and Tele's sound twangy. I hope this doesn't sound sarcastic. I'm just stating the facts.
  4. It does look similar to a Kajika Frog (Japanese).Look at bottom picture Another hijack attempt.
  5. You could always try a custom builder such as USA custom guitars or warmoth. PM sent your way!
  6. I used a hand plane. It came out fine and flat (with a gap on one end which I didn't care about), but (in haste) I glued the top on with gap at the bottom instead of the top by the horns where it would have been cut off. I could have removed and reglued the maple, but the bridge will hide most of the gap and the dark stain hid the rest. (I hope) Sorry, about hijacking your thread.
  7. Only if the wood needs grain filler! No, not generally. Alder is a fairly closed grained wood, so no grain filler. Unless yours is a piece full of opened grain, but probably not.
  8. Have you tried the "Webstrings"? I would be interested to see what users think of them. The reason I use Just Strings is I live to far to go to Guitar Center. I wouldn't go there any way unless it was a last resort. My favorite guitar store closed because GC moved in the area. I got better deals and service without the GC behemoth. Edit: I'm going to breakdown and try the bass flat wounds to see if the Webstrings are worth anything. Edit#2: Webstrings ordering system sucks. You can't order bass and guitar strings on the same order. I'm sure this to get you to purchase enough strings to cover their shipping costs, which they don't pass on to the customer with orders over $12.00.
  9. That is some really nice wood. As far as the gap goes **it happens when you're learning. I only say that because my caribburst P bass has a gap in the center at just about the same posistion. It was my first time at mating a drop top.
  10. Hello, welcome. First I would recommend you read some of the tutorials here. After that read the articles here. Do a search on the forum for finishing after you have read some of the other articles. You will get a better idea of what you may want and what you are up against. Finishing takes practise and the SAGA kit is a good place to start. I believe there is a sealer on the kit body. If it is finished sanded you just have to figure out which finish and look you want. Of course there is always the idea of going to an automotive paint shop to see what they will charge, or you could send out your guitar to Roxy guitar finishing and let them do it. But learning to do your own finish is rewarding and will give you ideas to make other guitars and finish them differently. I and many others here have started where you are and learned to finish our own guitars. I hope you like to sand. On my first attempt I had to sand my guitar down to wood three times to get it right. I'm on my fourth guitar and now I only have to sand it back to wood twice. I hope this helps.
  11. Welcome to the forum. I wish I could say that I have done a fret removal, but I can't. I would think instead of tapping them out you would use a removal tool as the one shown here on Brian's (Brian owns and moderates the Project Guitar web site) Universal Jems web site. Here.
  12. Don't take me wrong, but the price quoted on the Ebay site was "They retail for around 25, but you can find them for about 15.". So I just let others know that they were available at a lower cost from a different source than you stated. Sorry for any confusion I may have caused.
  13. I'm about to paint the rounded edge on my P bass. I'm am using flat black. Right or wrong thats what i'm using. Wait for more answers though.
  14. For good string prices in the US try-Just Strings I use Thomastik-Infeld strings. They last quite along time, but are too stiff for some players.
  15. When you get bored with it send it out my way and I'll keep it warmed up for you. Great purchase price for that one that clean.
  16. Good work. I'm impressed to say the least for a fourth guitar.
  17. I typed in Redwood semi-hollw guitars in google and came up with quite a few guitars. It got me interested in doing a redwood body with spruce top. Bass that is.
  18. You could try steaming the wood with a hot iron with a steamer built in, or you could spray it on with aspray bottle. Then you would clamp the wood down to a flat surface and leave it there for a few days to straighten out. Wait for others answers, but I've used tis method recently. When I removed the clamps I had the center of the guitar body lined out and the glue on and then glued one half of the maple on. The next day I removed the other piece and glued it on immediately afterwards. Hope this helps. Good luck. And this should have been put in the "Solid body and Bass chat", but the mods will probably move it for you. So, no big deal.
  19. I did a Google search for UK luterie supplies and came up with this. Hope it helps. Here I found this on the site. Here You could call or email them for assistance in finding dyes. Wood stain sold in hardware stores is not the same a wood dyes used on guitars, although the stain could be used. It depends on what you are trying to do. Good luck.
  20. I made some bells out of gas cyilnders used from welding gasses; and used japanese (chinese) characters for earth, wind, fire, and rain (made from brass). And then brazed them on the cylinders. I really like the idea for the sea turtle. I have shown your work to a lot of my friends who I think will be interested. All are pleasently stunned at your work. And now another great piece of work. I'm looking forward to the next fine piece of your work.
  21. That LP is looking really great as always, Setch.
  22. Going to have to change your name to SGDudeDan. I say use TOM for what it's worth.!
  23. Good luck Brian. Batten down the hatches. At least youhave a general idea what's coming, unlike over here with our earthquakes (which i'll ride out any day rather than a hurricane).
  24. Non of the above. I Don't want fame or fortune, and I sure don't want to work hard and live too old. Nor die too young. 85yrs old would be just right, with a little money, a good women, and a hobby or two to stay busy. That is what i'd like. And i'm almost there now {except the age}!
