  1. yeah i can understand what you mean about the amp. it isnt perfect really tho i assume that i could solve that by simple getting a 4x12 cab (god knows how id get it into my room) and then connecting an amp up to it? ill have a go at placing the mic at different places in my room to see what i get. the amp does have a direct out tho when i tried it quicklly it didnt seem to work with my soundcard. i reckon i just had the settings with regards to which channel was being recorded set up wrong but ill have another play with that cheers for the help. its definatelly given me a bit more to go on
  2. OK, first up, yes i know that this is the kind of thing that people spend years learning to do and i know that there is a wealth of knowledge that i could and maybe should learn. nehu, current gear is thus. guitar (Kramer striker loaded with quad rail humbuckers) --> FX Line-up (minimum is normally WH-1 -> DS-1) --> amp which in this case is a marshall MG15DFX, not an amazing amp but not bad....if your not using the onboard FX....or the distortion lol to mic up this amp i have a Shure sm-57 which goes into one of the Mic inputs on my M-Audio Omni studio. its then recorded in Logic. the problem im having is that im just not happy with anything that im recording. this could possably be because my general tone isnt actually as great as i thought it was tho i feel i should still be able to make it sound pretty good. im finding that whatever i try with the sound it just sounds either to flabby and bassy or it sounds exactlly like the sort of bad bedroom recordings that make you cringe. so, anybody who sort of knows what they're doing able to give me a few pointers. even if its just pointing me towards a helpful website thatd be great. if people want i could post a few sound clips to show what i mean tho it would be acutelly embarrasing
  3. MY personal preference would be the Vox V847 Reissue. ive got it and stock it sounds pretty good. modded it sounds very good and its easy to do. its basically the same as the crybaby from what i know (possably a different Inductor but if you mod heavily then you can change that) so theres my two pence (3.75 cents)
  4. if you have a laptop then heat is going to be a bit of a problem regardless of what processor you get. my computer knowledge comes from the forums on overclockers.co.uk where i lurk and obviouslly they're more closelly geared towards gaming and over clocking. the athalon may run cooler but the difference in a laptop isnt really going to be much. i wouldnt recomend overclocking it obviouislly but i wouldnt worry about the temp either. i see what you mean about the speed of the hard drive for direct recording but look at it like this. the dat transfer rate for USB 1.1 is about 50 Mbps i think. the average WAV file is about 50 meg for a 3 minute song so for direct recordsing you'll have no problems. (incidentlly the transfer rate for USB2.0 is over 100 Mbps i think so again, no trouble) with regards to bandwidth on the firewire connection. its designed to have things daisy chained on it and the data transfer rate is well over 100 mbps so zero trouble even if your running an external HDD thats being used alot and the audiophile. one thing to remember if your using mics is that you'll want a mic preamp and posablly one thats capable of phantom power. that could cost you a bit so id have a look around. it does of course entirelly depend on how you're recording. one last thing with regards to the processors, in truth it doesnt really matter just so long as its fast. data processing is data processing and while one may be able to do it a bit faster, as long as they're good they'll both be fast. as for noise and heat again, it'll depend on the design of the laptop and how they have the heatsinks and cooling done.
  5. god damn script kiddies. if your gonna start getting root on somewhere at least do it on something that takes a bit more talant. hell reranch may be secure but it cant have been secure enough to be a proper challenge
  6. ok the spec for my shiny black box of audio editing goodness is thus AMD Athalon 64 3200+ (winchester chipset if that makes any difference to you, supposedlly better for overclocking) 1 Gig of Crucial Ballistix PC4000 DDR RAM, very nice RAM. a gig as all you're gonna need really, even if your doing some heavy editing it'll be fine Motherboard is an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. not much to say, its a motherboard and it fits all the stuff lol. it has onboard soundcard, 2 network card connections, 4 USB ports a firewire port as well as an optical out on the soundcard. a few other nifty things but basically its just a nice mobo hard drive is a 160 gig Serial ATA Seagate Barracuda 7200. ide recomend this brand as they well priced and extremelly quiet. the case i got is the antec sonata. its designed to be a quiet case and is very well designed. its a bit pricey but i cant recomend it enough. thats probablly all that would be important with regards to audio. youve seen the sound card that im ordering. also you will never have problems with space on this MOBO, it has 4 SATA sockets, so if you really wanted to you could have 4 SATA hard drives which would give you 800 gig. i dare you to try and use that much space up lol. as far as i know USB hard drives are perfectlly fine to use. with hard drives i wouldnt worry too much about it being slow since the majority of the information youd be playing with would be loaded into the RAM anyhow. desktop vs laptop debate id go desktop but thats just personal; preference. my mates brother has his laptop as a recording studio and its good enough to run a prefessional studio off. i bought all the stuff for my desktop off overclockers.co.uk and built it myself. one place worth checking out for prebuilt audio computers is redsub.com. i had a look there but decided i could do better myself lol. all in all my desktop has cost me £700 for the basics. i then spent £200 on the GFX card and a nifty wireless keyboard and ive spent £330 on thesound card and a mic. with regards to the firewire hub buisness as far as i can tell it wouldnt compromise the audio quality one bit. the signal is converted to digital in the M-Audio device so it traveling through the hub etc wont do anything to it hope all thats helpful. if you really want i can give you a full rundown of my computer but i think thatd do more for polishing my ego than actually being useful to you lol
  7. Ive recentlly sorted out a new computer for recording stuff to and have about 15 mins ago ordered the sound card and a shure SM57 spec on the computer would bore most of you but it runs Doom3 at nearing full spec so basically it will eat audio processing without breaking a sweat. heres a link to a picture of the breakout box for the sound card http://www.soundslive.co.uk/product~name~M...dio~ID~1577.asp basically all that just plugs into the sound card which sits in the PCI slot. it has 4 inputs and 4 outputs for standard 1/4" jack inputs, 2 XLR mic inputs with phantom power, an external FX loop, headphone outputs and a few other nifty things. basically its all im going ot need for recording for a long time. its mainly for me and a friend who are startingsomething resembling a band (we prefer the term "noise project" since band conjours up images of talent") and if i need to get a new mic for his vocals then ill just do that once i get everything sorted and all my software then ill put up some sound clips for you guys
  8. really skinny girls arent pretty at all. you have to have something to hold onto besides her ears :D
  9. from lurking on the 18watt.com forum ive read his name a number of times and people always have good things to say about him and his kits now if only my stubborn pride would let me get a kit lol
  10. yeah lovekraft i saw drak saying that he wanted to keep it minimal but i thought id chuck it in anyway. however that little box would probablly be perfect if itd sit in the rack. the other alternative is always to add internal high impedance mosfet source folowers to the input of the EQ
  11. thrashncut id check out ebay first of all if i were you. you can get some really good stuff on there for great prices. this little beauty cost me £25(about 45USD) just have a quick look there and figure out how much ur willing to pay
  12. to match impedances would it not be really easy to just make a small box with a mosfet buffer in it? i realise its one more thing to carry around and means more cables but it would be a very easy fix to make and would mean it would be possible to run just about any gear between the preamp and the guitar.
  13. i played about with pinched harmonicswhen i was starting out playing and was in my SOAD phase lol. the first thing i started learning them for was the cover they did of snowblind. the entire verse is a bouncy little pinched harmonic riff and its damn cool.....but also pretty tricky. the best thing to do is just experiment and work out where you pinch it for different harmonics when playing different frets. its good fun when you can do it tho, i should probablly practise them again. recentlly ive just been making funny noises
  14. ah fair enough, seems like i was wrong (suprise ) i knew that an amp would draw alot of current when i started up but i never realised that the B+ voltage went up high btw ansil man, hows the neck?
  15. it should almost certainlly be fine. i doubt that the B+ voltage will be as high as that and it should be high enough to be easilly safe. you may wanna just check the B+ voltage incase but its just within a 5% tolerance so it should be fine
  16. curse my mother and her ability to squeeze money out of me for rent now that im working on my gap year. apologies again for backing out of buying that whammy. i would love it but funds just aintthere any more
  17. im actually ok now but cherd anyway drak. turns out all i needed to do was wiggle it about a bit to loosen it up then just screw the nut into it so i had something to grip with a pair of pliers. now i just have to decide what im going to do with this thing lol. im reckoning on some kind of tie dye fabric finish tho i dunno what to do about the binding. how easy do you reckon it would be to remove the binding so i can redo it? cheers JG
  18. As the title says im trying to remove some pieces of a TOM bridge from a body im fixing up. its the 2 inserts into the body that the poles for the bridge screw into. is there an easy way to do this or am i just gonna have to tug at it? apologies if this has already been asked but i couldnt find anything with the search button cheers guys JG
  19. yeah but thats mainly because there are guys like both of you who are happy so sit down and take time to explain how you go about getting good finishing results and how to build our tone machines in the first placeand not just end up withan expensive lump of wood. its all about sharing and i reckon you guys have definatelly shared enough to get all this in return lol
  20. well im very pleased with my little MG15DFX combo. the distortion sounded good to my ears when i first started off tho i now realise it dfoes suck. however as a little practise amp for someone starting off i couldnt recomend it enough. its gonna last me a while longer untill uive finished off my tube amp and it plays nicelly with all my stomp boxes.
  21. like lovekraft said that'll be a resistor not a cap. its that size because it'll be for biasing the power tubes and so will need to deal with alot of power. i would have thought a wire wound would be fine to keep and wouldnt change value much but im happy to be proven wrong lol
  22. DaveQ: save your cash and just get a whammy its not that clean but its a helluvalot more fun
  23. to quote someone from this forum (tho i cant remember who, may be you actually drak) a strat is modelled after the curves of a woman a tele is modelled after the curves of a lumber jack ireally liketeles, in some ways alot more that strats. i really should get around to building one....after the Pa amp conversion....and the latest fix up project......and the monster 7 string. oh bugger there goes allthe money i was planning to save on my gap year
  24. lol. nah man. keep with the frying. you may be a guitarist but can you make a bacon, egg, lettuce and mayo sandwich while sweep picking arpeggios. when you can, then you'll be a real man lol
