  1. Your business card is in cinemascope, I take it? so long ace
  2. I'd be licking it off as soon as I had it on I fear...I can't put my guitar down even now, imagine if it would also smell like food. so long ace
  3. German Ebay, mind you. His ID was "trinkweinfix", a spoof of a popular European comic series, "Asterix" meaning "he who drinks wine fast". His items on sale can be found here http://cgi6.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewS...&sort=3&rows=50 but there's nothing listed at the moment I sent him a mail pointing him over here and inviting him to the board. I'd post the pictures he sent me, but although he is a nice guy I want to steer clear of copyright issues, especially with our little ebay issues which are already known. I'm sure he'll post some if he so decides to show up so long ace
  4. Hey Jon, welcome to the forum. That PRS copy looks nice and if that's what you used in your mp3s also sounds pretty good ;-) Check out www.guitarwar.com, if I may be so frank and link over there so long ace
  5. Hey folks, I'm quite new to soldering, but after starting wiring a strat from the ground up over the weekend and installing two fender mexican singlecoils on another one today (my first strat "blackie" and my first real world soldering, it even works, yay!) I've noticed something: Soldering smoke tends to fly exactly where your nostrils are. I have not felt quite like this since I've stopped smoking, head is all light and spinning now... Is it normal that the smoke seems to be magically drawn to me? I know it's freaking toxic and helps growing nice big cancers, so what do you guys do (in addition to ensuring a good airflow in the room)? Wearing face masks? Soldering blindly with the head turned away? Things I've learned so far: - even if it's not hot enough to melt the solder, it's still very capable of burning your fingers - metals are heat conductors - poties are made of metal - soldering pins will melt the insulation on any wire, or electrical tape in fractions of a second - the above mentioned will smell even more god-awful than the actual soldering so long ace
  6. Do you have the link? http://europa.spaceports.com/~fishbake so long ace
  7. Okay this is a bit early, but still... I'm interested in making my own pickups, too and I need some info on the materials. The commonly used copper wire for the coils seems to be AWG#42, right? What types of magnets are used in pickups. I read about Alnico, Alnico II and Alnico 500...I've found a supplier here in Germany who sends Alnico 500 rods, 6mm diameter, 25 mm length, which would be the ideal measurements for a pickup I think, but do I want Alnico 500? I know John Fishers site and his idea of making the bobbin out of a wood core and a plastic CD tray is genius, now all I need is the wire and the magnets and even more patience :-) so long ace P.S.: I know what AlNiCo stands for, what really interests me is the tonal differences between the different types
  8. I think you can't go wrong with them for that price. They're easier to install and maintain than a buzz feiten system for sure an d you don't need a calibrated tuner. The sound samples I heard were definitely cool, open chords were improved a lot in the lower frets. For my first "real" project I'm definitely considering an Earvana nut so long ace
  9. Hey guys, gotta tell you what happened to me. I got the wood a couple of days ago and I noticed that it had dents on the underside (looks like the wood deteriorated, a juice channel or whatever). Obviously I was a bit disappointed because that limited my use for the board even more, I'd have to work very carefully to even get one laminated fretboard out of it. I wanted to give that guy a negative feedback because I felt ripped off a bit (nothing in the auction about those dents, picture shows the other side), but I reconsidered and decided to shoot him an email first, telling him that I'm not quite satisfied with the wood but can use it with limitations. I also told him that I wouldn't give him negative feedback. A pretty quick response came that amazed me, to say the least. He wrote back "Hey man, sorry that you're disappointed with the wood. Just tell me what you need and I'll send you a replacement piece for free. You don't have to send back the initial piece". I told him that I'd like a 500x60x7 mm board and he even asked me if he should pre-slot it for me. How's that for a nice eBay surprise? I asked him if he also built and he sent me a couple of pictures of his guitars and his workshop. I'll definitely try and get him on here when I mail him back today. Things like that really make my day so long ace
  10. wasn't that my idea? Actually fake bidding on his auctions was my idea...refer to the first page in this thread :-) so long ace
  11. Ain't that a bit dangerous? I mean, the clear coat sis not dry when you do that, I take it. Have to watch where you put that cigarette if you don't want a nice maple torch, eh? On the original topic, I've heard about that tea/coffee/tobacco thing, too and I think that's what I'd do if I'd have parts to age. I mean, it stains teeth big time so it should work on pickguards ;-) so long ace
  12. Thanks for the reply bluespresence, but I misformulated my question: The question should be more like "can I be sure that the routing of the neck pocket on all strat copies is such that all strat copy necks have the appropriate distance from the bridge when fitted snugly in the pocket or could it be that I have to "bolster" the neck pocket or in the other case make it run further towards the bridge in order to have the correct scale length? oh and Guitarbage doesn't ship to the old world, but thanks for the link anyway so long ace
  13. Apart from shooting toads with blowguns, what's going on? Any news from the front? so long ace
  14. Anyone care to enlighten me what MCS is? That guitar in your avatar looks killer, and I mean this in a very literal way so long ace
  15. Well, similar to the neck question above, I have a problem, if I may hijack this thread for a few minutes. I have two Strat bodies lying around and two necks (one 21 fret, one 22 fret) out of strat copies (not those bodies, obviously). I think I'm set scale length wise, but the screwholes in the body don't fit the holes in the neck. I mean, the spacing is right, only the placing of the holes is not right when I put the neck in the neck pocket. Should I simply drill 4 new holes in the neck or am I screwed? (pun intended) so long ace Oh btw, what is Guitarbage?
  16. Ace's easy rule of the thumb: If you can buy it cheaper than the material cost for you would be for building it, buy it. Read: wait for that second auction. Experience over here (Germany) however shows that necks seldom go for under 40 bucks plus shipping... so long ace
  17. Don't know about the clearcoat thing but it says "durable under hand contact" so I suppose you could leave it on for a couple of weeks without additional clearcoat, then take it off and repaint it. Of course you would need a Black Light Lamp on stage pointing to your axe like Vai has his hair blower fan so long ace
  18. I hear good things about David Barfuss, he sells his stuff on ebay, at least here in Germany. so long ace
  19. Alrighty then, I'll consider myself officially appointed as PG chat coordinator. "To project, and to serve" ;-) So far weezerboy and Krazyderek have been appointed as chat mods. We'll see if that's enough or if there are more mods required in the next couple of days. We'll also see if we should appoint a fixed time or open the room on a random base whenever one or more of the admins are online so long ace
  20. I was thinking about appointing a couple of chat mods that open the room when they're on and have time... we could also compile a list of PG members registered with Paltalk and their handles so that newcomers can add people in advance, then see if they're online...just a couple ideas. I was thinking that you should set up a group Brian, using my group today was mainly for testing purposes. We can use mine with no problems, I just thought you should be the owner of the group related to your site, ya know. don't want to steal your show ;-) so long ace
  21. ----------NOTIFICATION-------- I've set a password for the group, it's "project" as of now. all of this is subject to change, so be sure to check back in this thread if you are experiencing problems. ------------------------------------ so long ace
  22. Aww yeah, I didn't think of that...it is windows only, but most of those audio chats are. Of course we could set up an irc chat, too if there are many interested with other OSes. so long ace
