I've got some test mp3's for those of you who want to hear the lightwaves. The playing is sloppy. its late... and I aint no jaco.. these samples were recorded with the bass pod pro's DI out staight into the line in on the sound card, with no tweaking whatsoever. Here's the flat tone flat increasing just the piezo piezo increasing just the mids and sweeping the frequency mids increasing just the bass bass switching the magnetic emulation switch from full to jazz mag emu Heres a sample of the bass playing a couple different styles sample I think it has a really clean even response.

Those guys at lightwave are great. I didn't have any problems at all. I'm thinking about getting the midi daughterboard for the next one. jivin: What about the design didn't you like? I'm not offended at all. I really want to know so I can keep it in mind on the next one. I've had some people say it looks too much like a les paul bass.

Hello, I'd like to enter my "Tigger-burst" singlecut 5string bass. There is a thread in the "in progress" section with pictures of the construction. link I guess the things that make this bass unique are the 35.5 scale and of course the LightWave optical pickups. I milled and built the tigger-burst out of locally grown lumber, and hardware off the internet. Everything that went into building it I learned from Project Guitar. I've never read a book on building or finishing. Body: walnut with a ribboned maple top neck: Laminated Flamed maple/walnut/rock maple/walnut/rock maple/walnut/flamed maple . It extends through the body to the stap lock. fretboard: Birdeye maple with 28 jumbo frets. Finish: I dyed the top with aniline dye to match one of our cats "tigger" Then I used tru-oil gunstock oil to give it a natural look. hardware: Sperzel locking tuners. Brass cover plates. hand made brass nut. dunlop flushmount straplocks, The five string LightWave Pickup system.(built into the bridge) and five genaric knurled volume and tone knobs.

Ok here are the pics of the finished bass. I've just finished polishing the frets. I'm sorry the pics are so grainy. its my rotten cameras fault. Well here goes tell me what you think... I'd like to know what you don't like about it too. Because I'm already picking out wood for the next one. The lightwave pickups sound incredible. The long scale lets me set the action low and still not rattle the low B. It plays like it was made for me. I'll have to record something on it after I get the strings back on. My band is opening up for a metal music festival next weekend and I'll get a chance to hear it through a good P.A. I know its taken a long time but I think its been worth it. I looked at all of the other in progress guitars for insperation when I felt like I'd never finish it. ok more pics. Thanks to everyone for your help, and support along the way.

It looks that way, but the strings run through the bridge, not on top of it. I wish they were smaller too. But I think they need to be that big in order to incsapsulate the strings, and block outside light from getting to the sensors. again, thank you for the kind comments. I cannot wait to get home and find out what it sounds like. Not to mention I'll finally have a 5 string.

After reading the directions to the lightwave system I realized a tutorial was really not needed for the installation (basic soldering). The only tip I could give someone is to have all the hardware in hand before you route the cavity. I had to do a little minor surgery to get it all to fit. It didn't go too bad for a first time though. Here's a pic of all the parts that arrived. except the monolithic bridge pieces. When I recieved the pickups in the mail they shorted me 1 bridge piece. They're sending it this week. so the center one is missing. I will post more pics and hopefully a sound clip after I get back to Illinois.

Well, I'm in Nashville at my brothers house. I finally got some picture of the tru oiled finish. I left the neck unfinished for the time being. I'll finish it after I make sure I like the feel of it. Sorry the pics are so big. I'm using my brothers puter and it doesn't have all the apps I'm used to. He's also got dial-up Anyway here goes. The last one turned out a little fuzzy. but you'll get the idea. My brother (electronics guru) is helping me put together the Lightwave system. and I will take alot of pics. (because I can't find many tutourials for these on the web)

hello again, I know it's been awhile since my last post but I finally got the hardware to finish my bass. I bought some flush mount black strap loks from UniversalJems. (cheap too). I also ordered the LightWave system. They should both be here on Monday when I get home from work. It was starting to seem to me like I'd never get to finish it. Next week I'm going to nashville to visit me brother for a week. Hopefully I can post progress pictures from his house. (my camera stopped working about a month ago. I almost sold one of my basses to pay for the new hardware. (But I finally got some extra cash working overtime) Oh yeah. I sanded down the bass and gave it a new dye job. Should have new pics in the middle of next week. BTW is anybody going to NAMM in Nashville this weekend?

bartolinis are really good if you like a clear "transparent' sound. If your looking for more of a high gain sound try seymor duncan basslines. I really don't care for EMG Bass pickups anymore. Some people like a bass without a preamp for the vintage sound. But a good preamp shapes the tone of the bass. You'll pay alot more money to shape the tone in the same way on an amplifier. Besides you can always put on a preamp bypass switch. Bartolini and aguilar both make excellent onboard bass preamps. I haven't try it yet but I heard the aguilar obp3 is the best.

I just thought I pass on that Wal-Mart sells Tru-Oil in the sporting goods department. It is $4.50. Luthiers mercantile wants 6.59 plus shipping for the same bottle. I love it when I actually save money. Unfortunately it doesn't happen too often.

hello, I am selling my four string peavey cirrus bass. (my favorite bass) I'm selling it in order to finish my five string optical pickup bass. I'm offering it starting at $500 dollars to PG members before I put it on ebay. If you haven't played one before. Try one. They really sound great (hi fi). It has a high gloss flamed redwood top, a pau ferro fret board, and a 35 inch scale. It has a 18 volt onboard preamp and hum free pickups. I dont have a case for it.

I wonder, if you took two tops of the same thickness and clamped them together on top of each other. You could probably cut the flame design out with a thin scroll saw and glue the different woods together. You'd get two tops out of it. also, if you cut the pick up blocks out of the top before you laminated it to the body blank, the design would be continuous through the the pickups too. I realize that you were talking about something different. You just got me thinking. I don't know if it'd work but it sounds like a cool project.

I like bluespresence's idea, except I'd do the back in black with a nice thin pearloid binding on the spalt edge. I think that would make the spalt stand out better than just black. $.02

Hello again. It's been awhile since my last post, I've been working away from home for a couple months. but I 've finally made some more progress. I found some sprezel locking tuners on the bay and recieved some super jumbo fret wire from luthiers mercantile. I also got templates for the light pickups. I guess they're getting the next model back from the machiners in a month, so I'll wait for them. Here's a couple of progress pics. the first one is from the back with the tuners fitted and the body sealed this ones from the front with the maple dyed and sealed and the frets installed( in the process of dressing. the last one is the back of the head stock with the tuners on. I love the look of the sperzels.

The new aguilar obp3 preamp is really good. It costs about $140 I think they sound better than the bartolini preamps.
