  1. I used cherry red Stew Mac stain mixed with LMI waterbased laquer, and gradually added in a bit of black stain with each coat and then did three sprays around the edges with black and some read for the burst. I only used 8 coats and didnt do any straight up clear coats afterwards.
  2. well, i picked one up from a dude on craigslist, $450, in showroom floor condition (except pick marks of course)!!! Goodbye, Gibson SG. You are hereby bannished to your case as the backup guitar for eternity.
  3. Hey everyone, after researching quite a bit I have become fairly enamoured with the ESP EC-1000, however I have not seen one in person. The only two ESP dealers around me dont stock that model, so I have no chance of ever trying it out before I buy it, which is a major no no for me. I could take the plunge and go with mail order and if its not up to snuff just send it back, but thats a huge pain Done it before, dont want to again. The only pictures I can find of the thing are from the front, and I would love to see the neck joint details as well as here any sort of review of the feel of the neck. Thanks guys.
  4. i walked from this one, some other dude bought it anyways. i decided to invest the money in parts and wood for new projects
  5. i'll check those leads out. thanks guys i am looking for tops 3/8" to 1/2", and i am willing to split/bookmatch a board myself. ebay actually does have a ton of boards ~6.5" in width and 1/2"+ thick, so that could work out.
  6. I am having a hard time finding a good selection of reasonably priced bookmatched maple tops on ebay. Maybe its just a slow time for them? Where do you guys buy them? I don't want to shell out $100+ for a top!
  7. Its not a cost issue, its principle. I want a guitar thats made out of MDF, plain and simple haha. I plan on getting started next week!
  8. I want to laminate two pieces of 3/4" MDF board together to make a guitar body for a crappy Epi neck I have. I am not doing this for a permanent guitar, or even something nice, its just for fun basically. The MDF I have would definitely hold the bridge studs fun under the tension, however what I am worried about is laminating the two pieces. If you mess with MDF the top layer basically cracks off, but the inner is sturdy, however much more flaky. Hard to explain, but you'll know what I mean if you've ever done anything with the stuff. I'm just asking what my best options would be to stick to sheets together. I am thinking some Titebond and a few deck screws would hold the body together! At least for a while...Keep in mind, this is for entertainment only, and the guitar would be used as a complete beater in a band at school where I pretty much destroy what I play anyways (see: The Locust).
  9. Eh, I guess I'm not really feeling this one after all. I have spent quite a bit on parts, wood, and tools to build guitars over the summer already, on top of what I spent over the last two semesters. My bank account isn't exactly bone dry right now, but its just hard to stomache dropping the cash when it will sit around being played a few times a month. Other guitars will pop up later on, plus I'll just put that money towards either making more guitars if I have time over the school year once I finish the ones I'm working on now, or I'll just save it up for a reaaaally nice guitar for a graduation present to myself or a trip to Europe for 3 weeks with friends, or both!
  10. I dont mean skyrocket haha, I guess I meant I could turn around and sell it for a few hundred or so more than I bought it for.
  11. I have an opportunity to buy this guitar for $500 w/ the case, $400 w/o. Its a 1997 Gibson DC with a maple cap in wine red finish, near perfect condition. I really don't need it, and it wouldn't get too much playing time, however the price seems really good, and judging on its age and condition it will skyrocket in market value over the next few years. Before you say BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'd like to again say that I won't be playing it often as I my Gibson SG and the SG I built are my two main guitars. It will most likely sit in a closet for a while until I find a buyer and hopefully make some cash off of it. I'm on the fence on this one, help me out!
  12. I usually just put the knobs on the body in random orientations and stare at it for a bit. Once I find one I like I run with it
  13. Looked at the Ryobi today, it was decent, but my vote is with the craftsman
  14. i was in sears last week looking into that same craftsman press. it seemed very solid and i am actually considering purchasing it towards the end of the summer. ryobi also makes one int he $200 pricepoint that you can find at home depot. i glanced at it quickly last time i was there however didnt get much time to check it out. i am going back today to pick some stuff up, so i can look it over and let you know since i planned on considering that one too. hope that helps, and welcome to PG!
  15. you can get the same thing at home depot for <$15. thats what i did when i saw stew mac's price. same thing essentially too.
  16. you said they were the best metal pickups youve ever heard, thats a pretty bold statement! how do you think they stack up against emgs? i was considering buy a set of emg 81s for my gibson sg, however the guitarhead pups seem like a steal as far as active pups go. how do they sound and measure up to emgs?
  17. wow those guitarhead pickups seem like a good idea, could you give us a review of them?
  18. that was my plan for the sides of the route, but for the base of edge i am not sure what i will do. ill just go slow and be careful
  19. yeah, swampscott is pretty nice. i used to live in marblehead for 8 years and moved here about 5 years ago. and i live across the street from the houses on the beach
  20. i live in swampscott but yeah, my plan is to make a permanent one next semester out of multiple pieces of lasercut mdf, and run a bolt through all of them
  21. thats just the thing though, the wedges side under the template completely (see picture 4). i am using a template bearing follower bit, and the template sit on top of the wedges. the bit never touches them. you can see the middle wedge is cut in half to allow for the routing of the pocket
