  1. You had to be more specific with your question. For example, if you could only have one for the rest of your life... In which case, I selected girlfriend. But, if it was a case of your girlfriend threatening to leave you if you kept playing guitar... Then I would have choosen the guitar.
  2. The speed knobs are common on Les Paul style guitars. In my experience, I find that all Les Paul control knobs are extremely hard to pull off.
  3. It already ended. I had choosen to 'buy it now' this was before I was informed of the shipping costs. The seller said that it was no problems I wanted to retract my bid, he said the problem lies within Ebay allowing the auction to be cancelled. I don't know what I can do...
  4. Yeah, I felt really concerned that I may have broken something when I pulled it apart (it's not completely back together). I wanted to take the neck off again to check I didn't screw them in crooked. In relation to the corroded screws, I realize they do not affect the playing ability, but I may consider selling the guitar in the near future, so I want it to be looking great. The other thing I was a little concerned about, was using newspaper (as mentioned in 'Elbow Grease'), in the sense that it might scratch the finish of the guitar. I couldn't see any visible scratches, but I don't know, it's all strange to me, lol.
  5. So I decided to pull apart my Ibanez RG470 today. I read the 'Elbow Grease' tutorial, and decided to give the poor thing a clean (hasn't been cleaned for well over a year). I didn't do as thorough a clean as I was hoping for, so I just settled for a freeboard wash, and cleaning dust and dirt off the various covers and body areas. It's in really good condition, the only two things that bothered me were: 1) The truss rod cover: This was a little bit scratched from pulling off and changing strings. 2) The screws: They are/were black, but they seem to have rusted/corroded a little bit. It makes the guitar look in a bit worse shape than it actually is (as there is absolutely no hardware corrosion, it's just the screws). I assume these should be no problems to replace. One thing that did have me worried was when I was screwing the neck back on, the two top screws were really hard to screw in, it was almost like they were going in crooked, but they were straight. The strings and floyd rose tremolo are still off, I have to buy new strings. Is it natural to be feeling a bit concerned after pulling apart the guitar? lol. I am wondering though, how much would an RG470 in good condition be going for these days?
  6. Lookin' good, I just wish you sold EMG pickups. I am trying to get everything at the one place, unfortunately that's the only thing you don't have.
  7. If you donate $10 USD you become an Advanced Supporter. The few bodies that I downloaded were close enough to 1:1 size, I only had to resize them marginally.
  8. Sorry I should have included the guitar. It's the Epiphone Les Paul Special II which can be seen here.
  9. Hi, I am looking at purchasing a guitar that has a body made out of laminated alder/maple. I'm just wondering, because it's laminated, will this cause any problems when trying to strip the finish or restore it? I assume laminated is something that is just done on extremely cheap guitars. Anyone care to comment? Thanks!
  10. The whole purpose of the project was to buy a reasonably cheap guitar (at the $200 USD mark), and modify it by replacing the pickups and hardware, and giving it custom graphic work. If you have any other suggestions for around $200 USD, I would be glad to hear them... I know of Squier too, but I wasn't thrilled at the amount of 'canvas' I have left to work with (due to the scratch plate taking up 50% of the body).
  11. I just stole the example off the page that westhemann provided. I was simply using it to demonstrate how the CODE function works.
  12. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a huge warehouse with a lot of products locally. If there is one, I'd like to know about it! Basically, the ones I do know about would like to charge about twice what the product is really worth. I am trying to cancel the order, I'm still trying to decide whether I want the Epiphone Les Paul Special II or the OLP MM1. So many decisions to make, lol.
  13. Damn it, I stuffed up the poll and can't edit it...
  14. If you only had $200 to spend on a guitar, which one of these two guitars would you purchase? OLP MM1 Axis Guitar or Epiphone Les Paul Special II Also, list your reasons as to why you choose what you did. Thanks!
  15. Yeah, that's about right. The quote I got for delivery of a guitar and a hard shell case was $175 USD (for delivery to Australia).
  16. I know this may seem like a stupid question (and one that will probably have an obvious answer), but what is the purpose of the kill switch?
  17. Ok, yeah it does. Thanks a lot for taking the time to write that out for me. I do have a few other questions however: - With the pickup height, is it basically just experimental to see which height works best? - In relation to the capacitor, are these already in place on commercial guitars? For example, I am buying a Les Paul Special II, and just replacing the Humbuckers with the EMG-HZ4's. Would this require re-wiring the internals? I purchased a tape on wiring a Gibson guitar, so that will probably tell me what's going on anyways (hopefully). - In relation to shielding, is there any links you can provide me on how to do such a thing correctly? I can't say I'm really keen on being shocked, lol. Thanks for your help!
  18. In relation to the spacing on the tablature/exercises, if you use the CODE feature of the board, it will use a Type Text font which has evenly spaced characters. For example, this: 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 E:----------9-|----------8-|---------8-|---------8-||---------8-| B:-------10---|-------10---|-------9---|-------9---||-------9---| G:----11------|----11------|----11-----|----10-----||----10-----| D:-12---------|-12---------|-12--------|-12--------||-11--------| A:------------|------------|-----------|-----------||-----------| E:------------|------------|-----------|-----------||-----------| Becomes this: 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 4 3 2 1 E:----------9-|----------8-|---------8-|---------8-||---------8-| B:-------10---|-------10---|-------9---|-------9---||-------9---| G:----11------|----11------|----11-----|----10-----||----10-----| D:-12---------|-12---------|-12--------|-12--------||-11--------| A:------------|------------|-----------|-----------||-----------| E:------------|------------|-----------|-----------||-----------| I hope that's what you meant!
  19. Very unique! I like it! I haven't signed up with any other guitar restoration forums, I don't see any need to. I've found my new home...
  20. You guys don't fill me with confidence, I feel like I made a stupid decision by buying them. Unfortunately, I don't understand how to shield them correctly, as I have never replaced pickups before. Like I said, I'm very new to the whole hardware scene, and I am finding it difficult to understand some of the methods of doing various tasks. If the sound of the EMG-HZ4's are anywhere near similar to the EMG-81's, then I am happy, but if that's not the case, well I guess I made the wrong decision. Explain a few things to me: - Why is the distance between the pickup and the strings so important? - What is the impedance output and how does it effect the pickup/guitar? - What is drive line (CD or TAPE or AUX) style imputs? - Why is earthing the strings so dangerous? Why would EMG make a dangerous product? - What is a pre-amp (as opposed to a normal amp)? I have just been reading some reviews, and it seems that the EMG-81 is in fact, still the better pickup of the two.
  21. Do you have a local ESP dealer? Here is a link to the ESP baritone guitars.
