  1. If space is an issue, what about drilling out a small piece of metal and sinking that into the body. I'd be concerned about string damage to the body if you removed the ferules,(did I spell that right?)
  2. Welcome, hope you enjoy. What about something basic and straight ahead like an Esquire style. Not to say you aren't capable of more, but perhaps something basic as a first would give you room to play and learn without anything technical throwing you off.Good luck and keep us posted. And loads o pics please
  3. Check in with a place that supplies theater and movie places with stuff.Large costume rental places usually have stuff that may help. Also check local art supply stores. For adding aging to white maybe lightly and evenly sand with 1500 aplly some transparent yellow thinly and use a swirl remover to polish it back up.
  4. Some people liked to back bow the neck too.I've done it flat and backbowed and it really seems to boil down to taking your time. Also a drop of water on an unfinished neck can soften the wood with no ill effects. And ya the soldering iron on the fret makes a world of diff.-good tip.
  5. Cool finish, could you use an airbrush for a tighter spray radius and to maximize the colours? Also what are the results when you spray the colours at different finish layers from varying angles?
  6. You can add the veneer fairly solidly, soaking it will give you some bend without snapping. And to keep it from bubbling put a damp(not soaking) cloth between the veneer and your clamping caul.I used to apply it right against the veneer, but I like that wax paper idea butween the damp cloth and the veneer.
  7. Another alternative is Lexan(it's made by G.E.).It's stronger than plexiglass and totally clear. It accepts paint very well and viola instant finish when you spray the bottom. It can be a little expensive for a full sheet but sometimes you can buy an offcut piece.I think the Home Depot stocks it or you can go to GE's site for guidance on purchasing.
  8. This may sound silly, but have you checked out a local warehouse or shipping dock for skids.I know this might sound a bit off ,but sometimes skids are made out of hardwood.Better yet sometimes you can just take the wood(with permission of course) or they will sell it fairly cheap.
  9. I think Hipshot may have some options as well,(I think).
  10. Go for it,I've made a few bodies out of oak and they sounded pretty cool.Lacewood is beautiful, but 4/4 flamed oak?Man I'd love to see that when you're done! Please post pics. The only thing is some oak can be thirsty when it comes to the finish.
  11. Thanks for hiya's folks. Sorry but all I own right now is a solidbody Larivee and it's still in pieces. Will post pics when it's all together .
  12. Hey there folks, Just learned of this site through a posting on the Seymour Duncan site.Look forward to learning and talking about guitars.
