jeremyp
I used oak for a fret board and really liked how it turned out. It's durable and cheaper here than conventional choices for fretboard woods
avengers63
I got a lot done today. I'm gonna give the neck the vintage amber treatment with some amber shellac. As for anything else, I'm at a standstill until I get the other one disassembled and the chrome molding bought.
avengers63
A couple of coats of amber shellac. It'll take a few more before the color really evens out.
Fliski Guitars
That shellac really brought out the character of the neck! Its really great and rich- watching this build closely
avengers63
I ended up HATING the way the neck looked. With the f/b unfinished and the neck amber, it wasn't working. I sanded it all off a few weeks ago. I'll probably end up just oiling it and calling it a day. The rest is currently on hold waiting for the right bridge and tuners to come in. I placed the order last week, but they're both out of stock for a month or so.
avengers63
With the Iceman and Super Thin essentially done, I can finally turn my attention to this thing. Thanks to our local AllParts rep, I was able to get a good quality Dano bridge and some good tuners for this. The tuners are Grover Sta-Tites. I think they're actually for an acoustic, but I'm sure they'll be fine... especially since I got them for $10!!! I made the new template for the Gretsch pups. I'm going to be using the EXACT same electronics. They're not even getting un-soldered except for the pups. I'll most likely finish the whole thing up next week. I'm stealing the chrome edging idea from Our Souls.
WezV
those grover sta-tite's are pretty nice - certainly look a bit like they belong on an acoustic, but they are nicely made and will work well either way... i actually think they are nicer than rotomatics... but then thats not really hard
Our Souls inc.
Can't wait to see it.
avengers63
GOSH DANGIT!!!!!! I got the new p/g shape all lined up, but the blank have on hand isn't big enough and I can't make ANY purchases right now. :D The whole dang thing needs to be put on a shelf indefinitely for $15! avengers63
NEVER MIND!!!!!! I'm a dip. I mis-placed the blank I thought I had. I found it as I was cleaning up in preparations to move on to the next project I have lined up.
avengers63
Clearly there's a little left to do, but it's essentially done. I like the new p/g shape a lot better than the old one. It seems less clunky. I'm leaving the finish on the back untouched as an artistic choice. No grain filling, no leveling, no buffing... nothing. Just 4 coats of brushed on lacquer. I'm leaving it un-done because I'm wanting to channel the old tabletop/counter feel. I can't have raw wood, but I CAN leave it looking kinda raw. WezV
the chrome edging makes a big difference - looks a lot cooler cover the back with something if you really want it to work
avengers63
And what exactly would the back be covered in?
WezV
same as the front - although i suppose you could claim the natural back is what you would get on a real counter top
avengers63
natural back is what you would get on a real counter top That was my original thought.
orgmorg
If you want a real bottom of the countertop look, 1/8" masonite would look pretty authentic, especially if you added some wads of chewing gum. And the chrome edging turned out fantastic!
Our Souls inc.
I can see your shoes in the chrome edging pic. Sound clips??
avengers63
I never cease to be amused at what some folks pick out of a picture. Sorry, but I can't do any recordings. It really sounds killer though. The Northern ash body and maple neck give it a LOT of growl, punch, and definition. I'm sure the Gretsch mini-buckers are doing their part too
