feylya
So, I got very very bored, found sandpaper, wrapped it around my trem arm and scalloped my 21-24th frets on my cheap 7 string. Thought someone might be interested... http://members.boards.ie/feylya/scallop1.JPG http://members.boards.ie/feylya/scallop2.JPG Not great at all but I figured I'd nothing to loose. Have to string it up now and try it.
Pibrocher
Will you even notice much playing difference by scalloping only the high register frets? I like scalloped necks, big Yngvie Malmstein fan! What gauge strings are using on this guitar?
feylya
I don't know if I will. I've always wanted to try it but never wanted to sacrifice a guitar. I reckon I will notice it cos I can't get a good grip on the string at the 21st. I'm using 10s a step down. 7 string sets are impossible to find in this country and I can't find single 60 strings. Maiden69
Cool iam thinking of useing a scalloped neck on my next 7-string you got any pic's of the whole guitar?? !!METAL MATT!! Matt and felya , scalloping is not too hard, but if you do it wrong it will ruin the look of your guitar, I didn't even consider it until I was really sure that I could pull it off. Not just gouging a line thru the length of the fret is enough, you have to make it look li it flows, it is suppose to look kinda like an arch. I just got a Dremel contour sander, since this is what Brian used on his tutorial, and I must say that it rocks for scalloping. This thing is great. Here is a pic of the 1st neck that I did, I just did from 12 up before i had the Dremel, and finished the whole thing once I got it. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v195/Maiden69/DSC01083.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v195/Maiden69/DSC01080.jpg
feylya
Aye, I know it's not a simple line through the fretboard. I have to tidy mine up but I was just bored and I thought What the hey, I may as well. Next up is to change the heel!!!

feylya
Yeah, I know man. I worded my post slightly wrong. I meant to say that this wasn't my very very first attempt but it was my first serious one. Cheers for the compliment but I think it still needs some tidying work. I absolutely love the feel of it though
MikeB
feylya, about those strings - why dont you get a set of GHS zakk wayle 10 - 60 boomers, and buy some inbetween string which is available rather than buying a 10 - 50 set and looking for the bass string? just a thought. oh. btw, how does that guitar play, you linked me to it before, but now that you have one, are you satisfied? are the parts good - i may get one and use it as a parts source, if they are good. i didnt have any sanders when i did my ex-ibanez's whole neck or my 31 fret neck - i made guides from radiused bits of pine. okay, it worked great, my scallops are extremely neat on the 31 fret, but it took 16+ hours :S boy did i feel poor after that! hands hurt like hell for ages! anyway, i think you should scallop more. to test for myself i did the top 6 frets to see how it played, i liked it so i did em all, strangely i am back to normal necks, but i still like the scallops, so i switch between my guitars! Mickguard
Can anyone tell me what a scalloped neck does for you? Help you play faster?
feylya
MikeB, damn fine idea that. Don't think they do GHS locally though As for the guitar, it seems to be decent hardware. The Floyd is surprisingly good, the pickups are a bit muddy, the electronics seem ok, the knobs are metal with plastic inserts. The fretboard isn't fantastic. I'll see if I can dig up the review of it. http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread....ighlight=review idch: scalloping lets you get a better grip on the string but doesn't make you play faster, as most people think. feylya
Well, I could just get 7's from that site. The problem is having the money to buy loads at a time...
