lecompt
heya, i know know, i keep asking random noob questions, searched but couldnt find owt so here goes recently got a les paul copy, im replacing all the cream hardware with black hardware but would be left with the cream binding, is there an easy way to replace this without too much work? i dont really feel like ripping apart my new guitar.. cheers lecompt
Drak
Nope. It takes effort, skill, the right tools, and experience to do a nice binding job on a carved top instrument. Plus probably a complete refinish too.
Setch
What Drak said.... Also, the stuff you're replacing is trim, not hardware. It's a pretty **** retentive distinction, but there is a difference.
lecompt
poo. hmm, instead of replacing it then, can it be painted? sanded lightly then painted over? just an idea.. cheers for your replys lecompt.
Drak
It would have to be masked and sprayed. If you've never done spray finishing, the answer, again, is no.
Maiden69
you can sand the whole guitar and paint over it, or just sand over the binding removing all the clear and taping a faux binding, paint black or what ever you want and then re-clear, but I recomend that you redo the whole top with clear and when you shot the clear on the sides tape about 1/2" lower than the binding and once the clear has dried you can feather the edges and nobody will know that you redid the paint. I did on mine. And as you can see here you can't not see it.
