User01
ok, heres a challenge for you wiring experts i have bought a set of EMG Active Pickups, and i have NEVER installed a set of pickups before in my life. Here are photos of the guitar i am about to install the pickups into. There are pics from "under the hood". Pics: EMG Set 1xOutput Jack 2xPickup Cables 1xTone & Volume Pots 2xSpring/Screw Set 1xEMG 81 1xEMG 85 (Not All Items Are Pictured) http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/use...1/EMG81-Set.jpg Output Jack, Knobs & Switches Layout http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/use...01/DSC01441.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/use...01/DSC01430.jpg Trem Cavity What Is This Random Wire? Can Anyone Tell Me? http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/use...01/DSC01431.jpg Controls Cavity Overall View http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/use...01/DSC01432.jpg Tone Pot http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/use...01/DSC01433.jpg Pickup Selector http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/use...01/DSC01434.jpg Volume Pot http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/use...01/DSC01436.jpg Cables From Pickups http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v258/use...01/DSC01438.jpg I cant find any pictures of the coil tap switch, i dont think i took any, but EMG active pickups cannot be coil tapped, so i am just going to unwire the coil tap switch but leave it there because i dont want a hole in my guitar. basicly, using those photos, can you tell me how i would be able to install my EMG Active pickups. What would i need, what i need to do... What materials do i need? Do i need a solder iron? What metal shall i use to melt (When soldering)? Do i strip out the current electronics and use the pots that come with the pickups or do i just use the ones already in my guitar? i would be extremely! greatful if you could give my some assistance and plus its may prove to be a bit of a challenge for you. if you need any more information just reply and i will try to get back to you asap! thank you very much praveen indrakumar (User01) Edited February 13, 2005 by User01

marksound
Trem Cavity What Is This Random Wire? Can Anyone Tell Me? The only wire I see is the ground. Is that the one? Look at the control cavity and you'll see it soldered to one of the pots.

Look at the control cavity and you'll see it soldered to one of the pots. ← you will not reuse this wire on active emg pickups.thet require no ground to the bridge. emg pickups come with wiring diagrams.yes of course you need a soldering gun. i have my doubts that you are ready to tackle this .might consider taking it to a tech

crafty
Well, what do you THINK you have to do? You will need to desolder the wires and capacitor linking the two pots together and reassemble with longer wires and a new capacitor. If you've been saving your money to buy these pickups, do what Wes said and take the whole thing to a tech for installation. There's no need to screw up $200 worth of components because you don't know what you're doing. The other option is to find a friend who can SHOW you how to solder and read the installation diagrams. None of us here can actually show you how to do this from the internet. The only other problem I see is finding a place to put the battery. You may need to buy a battery box and route a new cavity in the body for it. Not hard to do if you've used a router before, but not something for a newb to do to his main guitar.
