Pekollio
Hello, I am about to embark on building a custom guitar and was wondering who everyone would recommend for buying quality blanks through the internet. Also the piece I need will be unusual in size so hopefully the suppliers you recommend will be able to accomodate custom sizes. If it helps I am looking for Black Korina. I checked some of the links provided but would prefer to use suppliers that have an excellent reputation with dealings through the folks on these message boards. Any help would be appreciated, Pekollio Edited February 13, 2005 by Pekollio

Maiden69
Gilmer is way nice but it's too expensive, he recently upped the prices too. I was about to get a mahogany blank that he always had for $65 and he is asking 125, and the ash piece that he is selling for $82 (1 7/8"x11"x48"), is tooo expensive, I just paid $40 for a 2"x8"x96" localy. Rockler carries body blanks now (in Boston area). -- joe
Bassisgreat
Try Gallery Hardwoods (www.galleryhardwoods.com). They have some really nice pieces, and customer service is good.

Ontario Ash is going up in price. We've been hit by the emerald bore, some freaky little bug that has a hard on for ash. Apparently upwards of 10 000 trees need to be culled in the area to stop it from spreading any more. Though in the short term, that might mean an abundance of semi-usable ash. fryovanni
Take a look in your local phonebook, that is how I found my local dealers. One of those local dealers being Gilmer ( expensive. a little, but very good quality and service), I also found Crosscut Hardwoods and they carry a ton of stock ( I do most of my treasure hunting there, better prices). Even Rockler, Woodcrafters etc... can be good if they are local ( I think they are a bit expensive though). If that doesn't pan then look to the net. Most body wood can be had for a much more reasonable price if you can avoid shipping $$$. Best of luck with the search! Rich
tdog
Gilmer is a major supplier and much of the wood that you see through the smaller dealers is actually imported through Gilmer. Other posts refer to the $65 price for mahogany body blanks....Let me know....I have 8/4 Hon Mahog body blanks which I'll sell for $40+actual UPS Ground shipping. As for Rockler and Woodcraft....They are not lumber specialists....You are better off dealing with a Gallery or a Gilmer because wood is their main business...not small tools and pen parts. fryovanni
I agree w/ tdog. Rockler and Woodcrafters are not specialists in lumber, but (at least in my neck of the woods) Woodcrafters main location has a pretty healthy stock (just a bit pricey). Crosscut Hardwood offers much better prices, but they deal in lumber (they do not have a full time person to select musical grade wood and seperate it, thus you have to look through their stock). Crosscut is a division of Emerson and are pretty huge. Gilmer has Marc sorting through their stock and grading it (and he knows his stuff!), thus you are paying for his time (and IMO his time is worth a little extra loot.). I think tdogs offer sounds very good @ $40 plus ship. I pay $6.50 per. bd ft. for my H. Mahogany and 14"x22"x 8/4 is around 4 bf., plus $$$ to join and plain for blanks. Best of luck to you!!! and tdog thats nice of you to offer to help him out. Peace, Rich
