Online Jam Software

Recommended Posts

Not that I'm aware of. The things that are generally available are only half duplex meaning, sound only travels one direction at a time.

Granted, it wouldn't be rocket science to create a full duplex streaming package but the fidelity would have to be fairly low for bandwidth variants.

It's been tried before. There used to be the Rockit network (I believe that's what it was called). Bandwidth isn't even a problem so much as network latency, which is a problem that isn't likely to be solved any time soon.

Even a MIDI jam is impossible in realtime right now. Those TV commercials they had out a while ago were a big fat lie. :D

as a matter of fact it is possible, but as said by others latency is bad, specially when the software youre using is only meant for comunication, but i get 3.9mbps and i pulled it off with a friend all i did was run the server on my own computer, to get an edge, at least a 50% improvement

its what i use to talk over the internet to my fellow gamers, we like to keep strategy at an all time high

Real-time jamming will always have a bit of delay but the older, CD or even multitrack to hard drive system is still used by a lot of folk who can't get together, physically, to practice or work on new stuff. Eckret Studios in Iowa does a lot of this for some fairly major bands. Everyone gets two or four channels to put in different takes of their contribution and the others in the group get to do der thing, saving what they like and sending it back to the others for review/critique. Cds take days to get updates. The multitrack downloading can get someone's new licks to ya in about twice the song's length. I know, it isn't really jamming but it is as close as you can get without latency and poor audio. IMHO but don't let it get out.
