screwdelulu
This is our first from scratch project, as the first guitar had a ready made neck. It's a fretless neckthru bass, 4 strings. It's design is almost exactly like fodera. Body: Mahogony and Cherry. Neck: Maple - Imboya - Mahogony. Fingerboard: Cocobolo. EMG 35DC active pickup. Gotoh tuners. I did most of the planning (in the computer) and i build it with my father. We work in our neighbor workshop. He has virtually everything we need but the room is very small and some of the tools are not tuned up (bandsaw). Time for pictures: This is what we ended up with today My dad is sawing the body using scroll saw. this is NOT the tool for the job and 4 blades were broken - we really need to set up the bandsaw... http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/ita.../scrollbody.jpg planing the body wing using the jointer http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/ita...ing/jointer.jpg Routing the truss rod cavity http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/ita...ding/router.jpg And the cavity itself http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v287/ita.../trodcavity.jpg If you would like, you can see some pictures of the first guitar in HERE Have a nice weekend Edited June 17, 2005 by screwdelulu
Bassisgreat
Looking good so far! Did you route the truss rod cavity freehand? That's crazy, hehe. It looks like whatever method you used worked well, so good job. I'll be looking forward to updates!
Gorecki
Very nice! BTW, Bob looks like one coooool dude!
bluespresence
Nice work! Good to see a bass around here and don't tell Bob but he's wearing a girl's hat
screwdelulu
Thanks guys, I'll pass Bob the message... For the truss rod cavity, I used an Edge guide, you can see it in the picture. Problem was i did it in two passes (lengthwise , not to depth) and somehow there is a little imprefection there - not a big deal though, it will work fine... Primal
Wow, looks pretty good! I am considering doing a Fodera copy, as well. I will be interested to see how this turns out.
screwdelulu
Just thought you'll be intrested to see what's new. Today we took the neckthru to the mill where they bandsawed it to the correct width. We then used the jointer so now it is ready for gluing. We couldn't get the bandsaw into working condition so we needed to cut the head angle using only hand tools. I came up with THIS JIG, which we found very effective. After half an hour using the wrong saw for the purpose, we got The right one and things went a lot faster, it took approximately 20 minutes to cut THIS. That's it for now, you can see all the pictures here
screwdelulu
Wow A long time since the last update. Here are the pictures: before gluing Making the tummy contour tummy contour from the side Chiseling the pickup cavity This time we decided using hand tools more often, we didn't use any router except for the t-rod cavity. SoundAt11
That's looking really good, attractive woods, a cool shape, and the contours are nice to. What's the headstock going to look like?
screwdelulu
Oh, sorry... forgot... this is the headstock I think i saw this one on a PRS, I have found it to be the ideal headstock (IMO of course). BTW: the end of the fingerboard reflects the headstock outline...
skibum5545
I really like this bass! As always, it's nice to see another bass around here; especially one that's this well executed. Hopefully I'll be starting a neckthru bass in the not-too-distant future, so I might come back to this thread for tips.
screwdelulu
We had a lot of faults until now so i think this thread could be very educational for you. I'll be posting some info about what happened and how we got over it soon... I think the main cause is that we don't have a lot of experience with the tools and woodworking in general... Thanks for the comments, Itai
