Neckthru Fretless Bass From Scratch

Recommended Posts

This is our first from scratch project, as the first guitar had a ready made neck.

It's a fretless neckthru bass, 4 strings. It's design is almost exactly like fodera.

Body: Mahogony and Cherry.

Neck: Maple - Imboya - Mahogony.

Fingerboard: Cocobolo.

EMG 35DC active pickup.

Gotoh tuners.

I did most of the planning (in the computer) and i build it with my father.

We work in our neighbor workshop. He has virtually everything we need but the room is very small and some of the tools are not tuned up (bandsaw).

Time for pictures:

This is what we ended up with today

My dad is sawing the body using scroll saw. this is NOT the tool for the job and 4 blades were broken - we really need to set up the bandsaw...

Thanks guys, I'll pass Bob the message... :D

For the truss rod cavity, I used an Edge guide, you can see it in the picture. Problem was i did it in two passes (lengthwise , not to depth) and somehow there is a little imprefection there - not a big deal though, it will work fine...

Just thought you'll be intrested to see what's new.

Today we took the neckthru to the mill where they bandsawed it to the correct width.

We then used the jointer so now it is ready for gluing.

We couldn't get the bandsaw into working condition so we needed to cut the head angle using only hand tools.

I came up with THIS JIG, which we found very effective.

After half an hour using the wrong saw for the purpose, we got The right one and things went a lot faster, it took approximately 20 minutes to cut THIS.

That's it for now, you can see all the pictures here
