demonx Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 Is it best to stain the fingerboard and neck before installing the frets, or after. Do you stain directly over the fret (wire) and then clean it back when dressing, or do you tape them off? What other methods have you guys tried to get a good finish in this area? Quote
Bigtommyb Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 im not an expert but i would asume that you would stain before fretting. just to make life easier. but dont take my word on that wait for one of the more experianced guys to tell you. T Quote
Mr Alex Posted June 23, 2005 Report Posted June 23, 2005 I wouldn't call myself too experienced, but I would stain before fretting. you can rub the stain better, and probably get a less patchchy result. and the stain probably wouldn't soak under the frets too well, so if you change to smaller frets some day it will have bits with out stain. also I cant see why you would stain after fretting anyway, just doesn't seem right to me. TenderSurrender Posted June 24, 2005 Report Posted June 24, 2005 Im not perfectly sure but if you already have your frets attached... you *could* mask them off? I know you can order stains from Stewmac Try using the search feature at the top left... it might reveal more... ~~ Slain Angel ~~ Quote
