Hendrxapprentice Posted July 10, 2005 Report Posted July 10, 2005 There's an article in here about how to make a black ive overdrive instead of buying one for 25 bucks. Ansil Gregory says to just buy a schottky diode and put them over a tone pot. But where should i buy a schottky diode, which kind should i get, and how should i put them on??? Quote
unclej Posted July 11, 2005 Report Posted July 11, 2005 radio shack sells them or you can google it and get several mail order co's that sell them. Quote

javacody Posted September 21, 2005 Report Posted September 21, 2005 I'm not so sure you can get a schottky diode at the shack. Mouse would be your best bet (like Ansil said). Quote
lovekraft Posted September 21, 2005 Report Posted September 21, 2005 (edited) 1N5817 at Mouser -buy 100 for 9 bucks plus shipping, and turn all your friends on to a Black Ice. You're not gonna find any schottkys at your local Radio Shack. Edited September 21, 2005 by lovekraft Quote
chibi Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 What would the Black Ice Overdrive be specified as? like whats it's techniqual name? just so i can look around else where for it. unless it's something thats specialy made for this. Quote
lovekraft Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 It's a passive diode clipper, but you're not gonna find one for sale anywhere else. If you want to search for something, try one of the schottky diodes that's been listed ( repeatedly, I might add) for this project: 1N5817, BAT41, BAT45, etc, ad absurdum. Quote
chibi Posted February 10, 2006 Report Posted February 10, 2006 ok then.. so the one at mouser is for sure the same one from stewart macdonald? Quote
lovekraft Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 No, but it has a low enough forward voltage to be as effective as the ones they use - personally, unless you've got really hot overwound pickups, I find this gadget to be somewhere between massively underwhelming and completely useless, whether it's homebrew or store-bought. It's pretty much a triumph of marketing over utility, IMHO -don't expect much, and you won't be disappointed. Quote
jamesj Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Any other Items to order from this company?... Hate to order just that, I want to do all kinds oe projects and just need suggestions and.............. plans! Quote
soapbarstrat Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 I believe they also sell the blue sprague atom filter caps for tube amps. Plastic pointer knobs. I might have bought some really small drill bits from them. maybe you need solder, a solder sucker. volume pots for guitar or effects. I know exactly the feeling. I will search a company's catalog from front to back , probably 3 times, before placing an order. But as far as that black ice deal goes, I think it fits the bill for an over-drive as much as bending a string with your fretting hand fills the bill for a tremelo. Quote
lovekraft Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Any other Items to order from this company?... Are you kidding? Mouser has (almost) everything you need for building your average DIY stompers - if it was me, I'd pick up some 2N5457 FETs and a few 2N5089s and 2N5087s just to keep on hand - you know, the stuff you can't get at Da Shack. And maybe a couple dozen of NJM072 dual opamps, a few 9 volt battery clips and a 386 poweramp chip or two, just in case I needed 'em. Of course, I've already got most of that stuff, so maybe I'm not a good example! Quote
