Recursion
Does anybody know how thick they made the 58 les pauls?
soapbarstrat
Not nearly as thick as your wallet needs to be to buy one.
Recursion
Haha...So true!
johnsilver
I have StewMac's plans for a "late 50s" Les Paul Custom. It indicates body thickness of 2 7/16" in the middle and 1 31/32" at the edge. It doesn't indicate any chambering, so this is one big boy. erikbojerik
Thick enough to make the "Rule of Eights"....8lbs 8oz for the whole guitar. And the humbuckers have to check in at 8 kohms.

Setch
Sounds a bit optimistic to me - my chambered Les Paul clocks in at 8lbs 15oz, and thats a pretty light Les Paul!
thegarehanman
I built one entirely out of honduran mahogany with a 1/2" carve and 1 3/4" thickness around the edge. It weighs only 5.5lbs assembled.
Setch
Now that is light! How thick is the maple? You've saved a 1/4" of thickness, which will account for some weight, but that must have been a nice light bit of mahogany to start with. johnsilver
The one I'm working on now, based on the plans above, is already over 6 pounds just the body and neck without fretboard, hardware, pups, etc. It has a carved curly maple top and a 1/4" curly maple back. The rest is mahogany as is the neck.
Recursion
Thanks for all the support! I was told it was about 2 1/16" but I just wanted to make sure before I cut too much off.

I was planning on doing a solid finish from the start, and I wanted a fairly mellow town, so I went with a full mahogany body and neck, no maple whatsoever. The fretboard is ebony, but that accounts for very little of the weight. It's a pretty bluesy guitar; it's got the good 'ol Seymour Duncan Jazz/JB combo. peace, russ
