snipes2222 Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 (edited) Hey,I was reading my newest guitar world yesterday and came by an ad for the stellar tone tone styler.Have any of you heard of it?It seems like a cool idea but is quite expensive.I read up on it on the website and it sounds like a rotary switch w/a bunch of different caps wired to it.So im wondering If you guys think its possible to build one that functions the same way as theirs or if its even worth the time for something like that? thanks Wes heres the websitestellartone Edited March 15, 2006 by snipes2222 Quote
crafty Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 It's a varitone that uses SMT components so it can all fit on a neat little board. A little pricey, though. Check out BigD's varitone. Apparently Randy Bachman and Robert Plant use his product, and the price is alright: Big D's Varitone Quote
lovekraft Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 I don't think it's even that complex, crafty - according to what the website says, it's apparently just a stepped-capacitor first-order low pass filter (like the old passive studio EQs). Either way, the asking price is ludicrous - $120 for a handful of NPO caps and a rotary switch is pretty much highway robbery, IMHO, even if you do get a free 1/2" nutdriver. But that's just me - and unlike those guys mentioned on the Stellartone website, I do use my tone controls quite often, so maybe I simply don't "get" how great it really is. Quote
snipes2222 Posted March 15, 2006 Author Report Posted March 15, 2006 hey thanks for the link crafty thats much cheaper and sounds like it works about the same.I think ill look into it.So if its just a bunch of little caps and a rotary switch how hard would it be to build do you think. thanks for the replys. Im building a walnut/mohogany guitar w/humbuckers and im looking for the most tonal possibilties i can get. BTW Im with you lovecraft I use my tone all the time.I was thinking of using the switch also. thanks Wes Quote

Yeah, I didn't even think about the fact that it's just a bunch of caps--not a true traditional Varitone. You could probably build one if you found a schematic and all the parts, but stuff like that can be noisy and give you a lot of headaches to work out, so unless you're really into the hobby I'd just pick one up from Derek. Derek's unit is sturdy and quiet, and the price is definitely right! Anybody who's not up to rolling their own should definitely check out BigD. Quote
snipes2222 Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 Sweet thanks gust I will definatly look into buying that instead of the stellartone. I must say this forum ROCKS! Wes Quote
