lovekraft Posted March 15, 2006 Report Share Posted March 15, 2006 I don't think it's even that complex, crafty - according to what the website says, it's apparently just a stepped-capacitor first-order low pass filter (like the old passive studio EQs). Either way, the asking price is ludicrous - $120 for a handful of NPO caps and a rotary switch is pretty much highway robbery, IMHO, even if you do get a free 1/2" nutdriver. But that's just me - and unlike those guys mentioned on the Stellartone website, I do use my tone controls quite often, so maybe I simply don't "get" how great it really is. Im building a walnut/mohogany guitar w/humbuckers and im looking for the most tonal possibilties i can get. Yeah, I didn't even think about the fact that it's just a bunch of caps--not a true traditional Varitone. You could probably build one if you found a schematic and all the parts, but stuff like that can be noisy and give you a lot of headaches to work out, so unless you're really into the hobby I'd just pick one up from Derek. Derek's unit is sturdy and quiet, and the price is definitely right! Anybody who's not up to rolling their own should definitely check out BigD.
