i-j-c
People often wonder why..well, why not. Got myself a squier brand new, bright red and decided to make a relic out of it. Process: Body. Sanded areas down to bare wood, left some areas with the paint intact. Painted the whole body as close as I could get to Oly white. Randomly beat it up. Sanded back with 800 - 2500 paper. Used wooly jumper to create the shiny parts again and a slight sheen on body. I used some danish oil on wire wool to make some yellowing of the paint. I wanted the effect of the red showing through on some parts of the body. The bare wood was treated with danish oil and polished up a little. Hardware. Used 800 paper on the saddles to varying degrees from low E to high E. Put in bucket and left outside for a week in the elements. After a week, put the bridge in coffee for 24 hours. Applied same technique to all screws...and the neck plate. Plastics. Sanded back with 1200 paper. Added some dings, took some knurl off the volume knob. Put in bucket of coffe for 48 hours. Wiped clean. Sanded scratchplate back with 2500 paper to get some gloss and put a coat of carnuba on it. Polished it, to give it a sheen. Used T-Cut to shine up areas of hand contact to make really shiny (next to bridge on the edge). Neck. Used a mixture of linseed and danish oil and applied into fingerboard for some time after giving it some abuse with wire wool. The edges of the neck were rounded over then a couple of dings put in.. I have some klusons on order to finish it off... Anyway, here's some pics. Ben
Nice! The aging on the hardware looks great; not too much, not too little. Y'know some day I'm going to have to try some of this relicing for myself, except go crazy and completely over the top and set it of fire and throw it out of my bedroom window and stuff. It looks fun. I could call it Xtreme Relicing
j. pierce
Nice. At first, it seems like, well, kind of random and odd relicing, the spots on the body. Like, it wasn't what you expect a worn guitar to look like. But now that I look at my old Peavey I bought when I was 14, that's pretty much what it looks like. Did a nice job avoiding the "purposed relic" look. Wasn't sold at first but the "whole picture" shot, seeing the whole thing, it looks real nice. And I'm a sucker for aged-looking white paint and parts. I'm enamored with the idea of relicing lately myself, except I want to build something that's obviously a one-of-a-kind guitar, i.e., a different enough body shape so it's not a reliced strat, LP, etc. I'm just tickled with the idea of a making a mystery guitar that looks really old. javacody
Man, that paint looks thick. Did you use poly? I think the guitar looks cool. But if you are going for a vintage 60's strat look, you are missing one thing. Lacquer checking and you aren't going to get that with poly. If you are going for a beat up strat from the 80's on, then I think you've suceeded!
Marzocchi705
that relic is SWEET! Looks pretty much exactly like my guitar teachers exept his was a Daphne blue base coat and it is actualy from the 80's! Nice job!
Pr3Va1L
I think you should get some wear on the pickguard... It looks funny that everything is worn and faded but there's still an almost white pickguard. Anywayd, I think you did a great job!!
