westhemann
hey dudes(and girls too) i just bought this body for $80 as a factory second.came with electronics to but i don't like those cheap pickups they come with.i thought that the finish would be what is second rate but i was wrong the finish is good.the flaws are in the drilling and routing of the guitar body itself as they drilled through the walls of the trem cavity and pickup routs.but these are minor and are inside the body antyway so i am not going to refinish it. i am going to build my own neck for it.it will be my first neck and i am planning on making it a 3 piece laminate of maple and possibly cocobolo or bubinga. but i don't really have any ideas for what to use for the fretboard or inlays.i want the neck to compliment the body.i was considering ebony fretboard with maple(quilted)inlays and binding.tsl thinks the same thing except with abolone inlays. i just want to throw it out there for all of you to make suggestions so maybe you guys can think of something i haven't.i want it to be a really classy neck. anyways thanks
tsl602000
Wes, Cocobolo is very nice, but it's oily and hard to glue. The folks at Warmoth quit using it becuz it's so toxic and has all kinda alergic reactions. Have you considered Brazilian Rosewood?
westhemann
i am willing to consider anything.bocote looks similar to cocobolo and is not oily right?
tsl602000
Bocote is more expensive... Also darker sounding than ebony and doesn't look much like Cocobolo. Cocobolo is more reddish...
westhemann
i don't mind the price and i meant the grain and texture more than the color.darker might be better
tsl602000
I'd go for either Ebony or Brazilian Rosewood..... 1st grade stuff The fingerboard of my Tele is Brazilian Rosewood too. What tools do you have to make a neck?
westhemann
well pretty much nothing yet...but i want to get a planer and i have a rasp and plenty of sandpaper.what do you suggest?
tsl602000
a straight edge, a router and LOTS of sanding paper. I like to use belt sanders sandingpaper. Cut 'm open and use it to round the neck, or glue it on a straight piece of metal to sand the sides.
westhemann
i have a straight edge and a dremel with a router bit and base.and a belt sander.and a bench sander
tsl602000
I don't think the dremel is powerful enough to route the trussrod channel in hard rock maple.....

Brian
Worse that could happen with it, is you try it and don't like it then sell it in the street at a yard sale for $30 Like new condition Plunge Router!
