Matt
Well Ive made a couple guitars before and Im around half way on my JEM project. just thought id post som,e of my progress pics and see what people think. I have done most of the routing/shaping on the body but forgot to take pics. here are a few pics of the neck (the one with the skunk stripe). The neck itself is birdseye maple with Lacewood stripe scarf jointed, then cut down with walnut sandwiched on either side, which is also scarf-jointed in the headstock into lacewood. I did this as I liked the idea of having the glue joint in two places to add to stability. The neck itself is thinner than a wizard, so it will either be pretty incredible to play.... or snap!? so we'll see. The body Im thinking of doing a laquered material finish. was thinking of black silk but I think it will be too thin and the glue will soak through. Also a big thank you to Feline guitars for their help and patience. Those 6000 are killer http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0347.jpg MMM Edited September 13, 2006 by Maiden69
Maurits
Looking good. Love the back of that neck, but thinner than a wizard, damn! What's with the odd links though? Will it also have the monkeygrip?

Matt
Ahh rollocks! yea I messed them up, Im not very good at thye whole linking thingy Got the truss rod today, slight teething problem as when I route the channel, I only get 2mm between the bottom of the channel and the back of the neck so Im wondering if I carry on and hope it will be enough, or I try the vintage style which I was originally going to use as its thinner and less deep pocket. Any ideas? cheers Matt
Maurits
And that is why baseball bat like necks are the way to go
Matt
Right well Ive had a number of problems so far which have limited the progree, but touch wood, I think Im ok. 1st big problem.... I bought a U-channel type truss-rod from Feline guitars, but becasue the neck is so thin, I couldn't use it. so I had to go and I used the traditional type as this allowed for a much shallower depth, plus I prefer having a greater amont of wood in the neck including the wood fuillet that goes on top of it. 2nd big problem.... After glueing in the TR, I found the tap I had cut didn't fit the nut properly, (bloody American backward measurements ). So I had to chisel it out and start over again. finding the right rod is bl**dy hard in England as it's all metric here mostly. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0382.jpg so I then made another truss rod, but becasue I had epoxy-resined the anchor piece in, I had to melt the resin using a oxy-acetelenye welder!!! http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0379.jpg 3rd big problem.... Then found after glueing in the secound TR that the nut was proud of the neck where th FB goes and also in turn where the lock nut would sit.... "Oh B*ll*cks!!!" so I have just finished glueing some ebony veneer to the top to give a little bit of hight over the nut. and the body so far http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0384.jpg MMM
Maurits
Looks good. Shame about the trussrod issues.
spazzyone
Thats a great match of wood as i can't see the scarf joint and the truss rod is just too bad. what about the gotoh side adjust truss rod warmoth uses like this http://www.mercasystems.com/gotoh-truss-si...62e63bdc855bd42 those damm bloody americans Edited September 20, 2006 by spazzyone
sexybeast
A bit off topic, but I have to give you props for using the caulk gun as a clamp. I have a ton of these at home and my clamp set just got way bigger. Oh yeah, the guitar looks excellent so far.
Matt
just an update on the neck, nearly finished... just having fun trying to get the FR nut holes aligned in the neck, which is proving a bit tricky. next time Im definately gonna get one of those lock-nuts which screw in from the top!! sanded to 240 grit and awaiting final shaping and sanding before sanding higher and then Danish oiling. just a quick question... what do you guys put on the fretboard? Im just worried that Im gonna make my lovely black ebony FB go all glossy and crap. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0387.jpg .. back of neck http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0386.jpg ... side of neck MMM Edited September 23, 2006 by Matt
Setch
just a quick question... what do you guys put on the fretboard? Nothing, nada, zip, diddly-squat. Ebony, RW, Pau Ferro etc need no finish. Some folks like to wax them, some apply a non-drying oil, and some nothing at all. It's all good. DanielM
how do you shape that neck to such a uniform profile? because I'm having a hard time to get it that nice.
Matt
I start by using a spokeshave then shape with a sander and then the more uniform shaping with a longish Sanding blockand a curved cabinet scraper... the magic tool!! Zerimas
Quick question: How did you get your lacewood to stay that nice red colour? My Dad and I are working on building a guitar now and we also have a strip of lacewood down the middle of the neck. However, in some places where the neck was sanded the lacewood isn't very red, in fact it looks like it's covered in dust! Any help is very much appreciated! Matt
erm not sure actually, I think it depends on which way the grain is going and also if you use a cabinet scraper, it eliminates the dust.
guitar2005
just an update on the neck, http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0386.jpg ... side of neck Love that neck. Can you tell me when you put the biding on the fretboard? What are the steps? is it glue the fretbooard on, trim it to fit on the neck, route a rabbet then glue on the binding? Thanks
Matt
Cheers!! Well I made th neck roughly, then cut two MDF templates, one neck sized and then one 1.5mm narrower on each side ffor the FB. I then used a router and used double sided tape to attach the templates. and used a router with bearing guide to trim them. Then glued the FB to the neck central to it. then glued the binding to the FB and trimed it with a small plane.
Matt
Right well the neck is sanded to 600grit and I have solved the problem about using rear bolt lock-nuts. Also it has had one coat of Danish oil dilute with 20% white spirt to help it penatrate. http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0393.jpg back of neck http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0392.jpg fretboard http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y125/mcmeat51/misc_0391.jpg headstock Im afraid the piccy's are rubbish as a) our camara is crap Half the lights have just blown in the workshop c) Im not very good a taking photo's Can't wait till I finish this!!!!! Any suggestions for Pickups? I play anything from blues to Death Crushing Heavy Metal ......Actually more of the Heavy metal, so I need PU's that will be fairly versatile, but are really good gainy PU's sort of like EMG 81's. I might put a calibrated set of BareKnuckle Nailbombs in it which are just what I am looking for, but They are a little expensive for me being a student and all that so Im gonna wait a while till I have a job again. Thing is I already have one and now I find I can't stand any other brand of PU's! I was thinking some Kent Armstrong ones? Thanks matt
MidnightLamp
I know this may sound wierd, but try looking at the EVH wolfgang (peavey) pickups. A guy on the forum is selling a set right now. I've used several of those pickups, and find them to be ridiculously clear and very versatile.
