Ben
That burst is lovely
themortarman
Thanks Ben!! It turned out darker then I had planned. I just couldn't leave well enough alone . But I'm digging it.
mikevirok
Great job so far!!! Only comment I can make is that the picture of the burst has a pair of scissors (aka: pointy-sharp guitar finish killers with handles) laying dangerously close to your great work of art. Be careful!!!! Can't wait to see images of the finished Les Paul.
tim_ado
please tell me that your not putting gloss on it looks so good with the matte
themortarman
While that picture looked ok, in person the burst was dark and too orange and I just couldn't like it. Decide to start over from scratch on the top. Much closer to a faded Cherry Burst Damnz I missed the HB route some with a scew I used to temporally hold the top to the body. Hopefully the mounting ring will hide that. Edited July 2, 2007 by themortarman
themortarman
One more of the new found cherry burst.

biliousfrog
nice, I preferred the darker one I think but to each his own. Just wondered whether this should maybe be in the WIP section? It would be beneficial for anyone searching for LP's under construction for tips & ideas...I usually search the entire site but for a more streamlined search I'd go for a specific section such as "in progress". themortarman
While that one picture did look pretty good actual looked amazing. In person and every other picture it was really dark and orange.
johnsilver
Mortarman, I just came across this thread. Very nice! I'll bet you can't wait to get it strung up. Were you able to work out the 1/4" binding in the cutaway? I don't know anything about Golden Age pups. I put a Duncan Custom and Duncan Pearly Gates (bridge and neck) in the LP I completed recently. My son is the player and he is very happy with them. Great work.
themortarman
The Binding I went with was Ivoroid . I ended up splitting a small piece and gluing it on top of the inner horn section, then making a paste from binding shavings and acetone to hide the joint. I ended up tinting some lacquer and sprayed the binding to give it a more yellowed\aged look.
johnsilver
Sounds like a good solution for the binding. And the yellowing looks good.
tim_ado
i think i prefered the other burst but ohh well i think you shouldnt gloss it just leave it matte that would look sick
themortarman
Well after looking at the Cherry burst I am back closer to the burst I originally had in mind. It's hard to capture a picture but this is a pretty good picture of how it looks. I also sprayed the binding with a tinted lacquer . It makes the Ivoroid binding look very wood like
tim_ado
yeah thats the best i think sand it down a bit more to make it more matte...............................do it for me
themortarman
The waiting got the best of me. Sorry Tim had to go with a gloss finish. The bindings sure are yellow. I saw a LP Classic Custom that had even yellower bindings so I don't feel so bad after seeing the CC. Ended up with some Seth Lovers. themortarman
With strings, to bad it's overly noisy. Going to have to work on that part next weekend I guess.
jmrentis
Very nice! It really turned out well I think. I like the hardware colors and everything, very well done. One cool aspect about this project is could probably get away with telling people its black limba binding, lol, jk. Very nice work, keep the pic coming.
