Hotrock
Most are between about 10 and 15 degrees. I think some Gibsons had an angle of about 17 degrees (some time ago) but they were a bit prone to snapping of if the guitar was dropped. So don't drop it! westhemann
in 14 years of playing i have never dropped my guitar.lucky me i guess
canuckguitarist
i havent dropped mine in 3 years... but hotrock is right, the bigger the angle, the weaker the headstock.
DannoG
If the angled headstock has a scarf joint rather than being one piece, it will be much stronger (still don't recommend dropping it....) One piece necks have short grain at the angle. A substantial volute can also help strengthen that area.
ryeisnotcool2
i love scarf joints! i can stand on mine they are frikin strong! i do a 14 deg. angle
malmsteen
i forgot to measure the angle today but im going to check tomorrow if i remember. Its made with scarf joints and im going to use a volute thing. Whats the biggest headstock angle you've heard of?
malmsteen
ok i measured the angle today and i found out it was a 20 degree angle. Is this too much? there's not much i can do but im definetly making a volute.
DannoG
I think Hotrock had it right with 17 degrees being the old Gibson figure. That is the largest angle I know of. One glitch with high angles is the increased problem with strings hanging up at the nut. If you bend strings very much, it could be aproblem. I would make sure you have a good slippery nut. You could use a graphite nut or add nut lubricant, but be sure that the relief (the section where the slotlowers and spreads on the tuner side) on the nut is ample and smooth.
