angry_jeremy Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 (edited) So, by some stroke of pure genius I forgot to put a neck angle on my set neck V. I only realised this once I had it glued and painted (anger....rising...). Anyway, I know there are companies that purposely do this and recess the TOM bridge and I may have to do that. Just wondering if there was a really short TOM out there. I currently have the Gotoh TOM from StewMac with the post/bushings and hex nuts on the intonation screws. http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Bridges,_tailp...s_Bushings.html :D Edited September 27, 2007 by angry_jeremy Quote
GregP Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 I once read that Carvin's TOM is shorter. Actually, their own description seems to match: http://www.carvin.com/products/single.php?...C&CID=GTR/K It uses thumbscrews, though; dunno if you'd need adapters in the event that your Gotoh bushings are already installed. I would venture "yes" but I don't actually know. Greg Quote
Rick500 Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 I'd just recess the TOM. In fact, that's what I'm doing with the one I'm building right now. It has a zero neck angle on purpose. Quote
GregP Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 +1. I even like the LOOK of my recessed TOM on my Godin. Quote
Mickguard Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 Pigtail makes a low-profile wraparound I think. Believe it's aluminum too. Nice n' lightweight. Quote
angry_jeremy Posted September 28, 2007 Author Report Posted September 28, 2007 I actually like the look of the recessed bridge, just not what I had originally planned to do. Since I've already painted I'd have to rout the slot then re-paint the bare wood. Not a big deal but not part of the plan. Quote
bancika Posted September 28, 2007 Report Posted September 28, 2007 I like it better with recessed, lower profile is easier to play - at least to me. Check this out Cheers Quote
Xanthus Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 + 1000 to the recessed TOM. As to Alex's diagram and Doug's own pic, I'd recess the tailpiece (if any) as well, to keep the brake angle over the bridge, and don't forget the low-profile pickup rings! I still want one of those cool-looking tailpieces, Doug In black, of course. Quote

GregP Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 Dunno, I was only going by the pic in the link, which doesn't even show the bushing. One could always give'em a ring, though! That said, if that's one of their low profile TOMs, they're still recessing it, so it's apparently not low enough. Have to give'em a call to know for sure. Quote
Fraser Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 recess that TOM my friend. keep a watch on the clearance for the intonation adjustment screws though. another thought, these bridges are about 4mm shorter than a normal TOM....that may help.. LP Junior Bridge Pigtail Aluminum Wraparound Bridge maybe some food for thought. good luck! Quote
Rick500 Posted September 29, 2007 Report Posted September 29, 2007 Here's a pic of a Carvin "M" TOM bridge. Be aware that this isn't the same one they sell as a separate part. Quote
johnsilver Posted September 30, 2007 Report Posted September 30, 2007 Angry, your misfortune may be serendipity for me. I really like the look of those recessed TOM examples. I find the look really clean, especially with string through ferrules vs tailpiece. I may have to use that design in the future. +1 to Xanthus regarding the break angle. Whatever you decide to do, I suggest you carefully plot it out to ensure you don't bind the strings on the back of the TOM. Quote
Rick500 Posted September 30, 2007 Report Posted September 30, 2007 The Carvin ones are Gotoh, or manufactured by Gotoh. Yeah, they do have Gotoh stamped on 'em. I was just pointing out with the pic that there are two different types that Carvin has (the bridge piece itself is the same between the two)--the one that they sell as a loose part has thumbwheels and no threaded inserts, just small threaded posts; and the one they use in their "M" bridge guitars has large threaded inserts, and post end slots for adjustment. angry_jeremy Posted October 17, 2007 Author Report Posted October 17, 2007 Yeah, I'll go with the recess. I like the look and am now kinda forced to do it. Break angle is OK now with the retardedly high bridge so should be smooth sailing with the lower one. Crappy thing is that I've painted it already so I'll have to touch it up a little. Not the end of the world. Thanks all for the replies. :D Quote
Digideus Posted October 17, 2007 Report Posted October 17, 2007 Mark out the area for the TOM then use a craft knife to cut through the paint finish before you Rout it and mask the area heavily with tape. It should help prevent too much damage to the existing finish. Expect to do some touch up work tho! Oh and POST PICS!!! Quote
