As you mention - the multi-layer effect. Or you could go ahead and strip the binding from the neck. What kind of pickup rings (if any) are you using? Another thought may be to angle the trim on the neck into an angled piece on the body to sort of "blend" the two at a specific point, like right where the heel starts. I thought it was a great idea. The router didn't agree, so it ripped off a big piece of binding just to prove it's point. I'm glad it didn't take any wood with it. avengers63 Posted November 11, 2008 Author Report Share Posted November 11, 2008 Here it is after some fun with the angle grinder, but before a LOT of time with a mini-plane, 1/4" chisel (paring, not chiseling), and some 40 grit. There are some new (for me) items I'm working on, so look for the pics tonight or tomorrow. I'm also testing some light stain on some scrap ash. I'm looking for that "Fender amber" look without using dyes. I'm PLANNING on doing the inlay for the headstock, but I don't know if I'll have the time or the attention span. avengers63 Posted January 23, 2009 Author Report Share Posted January 23, 2009 I just realized I haven't updated this in quite some time. Not that there's anything interesting going on. I have the cavity covers made from leopardwood and the headstock inlaid with the leopardwood J. It all got 2 or 3 coats of sanding sealer. I don't remember how many - it was in November. Right now it's all being bulletproofed with brush-on poly. I'm figuring 4-5 coats will do the trick, buffed with steel wool between coats. I only buffed the finish up to 1500 this time, just to see what the difference is. It's pretty significant. This isn't nearly as mirrored as going to 3000. I'm seriously considering stripping the finish off the back & sides and staining the wood black. The top & neck would be untouched, but the ash would be stained black. Any thoughts or other input? I'm not too sure how the back and sides will look with Black staining, but I don't think that it will look too bad. Like I said though, right now, I love how it looks.
