DUY1337GUITAR Posted March 11, 2009 Report Share Posted March 11, 2009 Hi, I decided to build a guitar a few months ago and been buying lots of parts. My guitar body is a CNC-machine-made Honduran mahogany jem. Click here to see what it looks like. I bought flamed maple veneer from universaljems.com cuz I wanted to do a color stained natural wood finish. Applying the veneer to the guitar was a lot of fun. Click here to see the process. Now for the best part: I couldn't choose between transparent blue with a blackburst or a green with a blackburst. So, I decided to do a dragonburst with a strong blue-green for the main tone, and burst of a deeper blue on the edges that blends in towards the middle, and a thin blackburst to transition to the sides. Click here to see how I did it, it looks really cool in the end. I didn't make a video of me applying the blackburst yet. I also already applied sanding sealer and several clearcoats, but I'll get the videos done later to show. I'm really happy about how successful my project is going now. I'm only 16, and not experienced in guitar building (obviously), but I hope it will turn out well in the end I might have questions about a few things and I would want to ask you guys when I need to. That burst looks great, with the clear coats and hardware on it'll looks awesome, and you'll have to tell me about how that necks plays and it's quality etc. Iv'e had my eye on them for quite a while Keep it up! All credit to you spending the time you've obviously spent on this so far and for doing such a neat job at 16 years old. Wish I'd had the patience to do something like that when I was 16!! jaycee Posted March 20, 2009 Report Share Posted March 20, 2009 I just checked out you vids and there's some nice work going on there, and I love the colour. I noticed you cut the recess' out after the veneer had been glues for 4 hours, ignore what it says on the can regarding drying time and working time and give it 24 hours before you remove clamps or weights, (unless the intructions say more time than 24 hrs is needed) Some glues will set in a few hours and can be workable, but they do need that bit extra to cure, and generally 24 hours is a good period for this to happen. I would have carried that burst a little further into the body, but it is still very nice work. I can't wait to see this one done. That is one guitar that will definitely stand out in a crowd. If I could do the staining the process again, I would definitely make the blueburst wider into the green, and maybe even the blackburst. I remember finding info on the neck that it originated from China and sold in bulk to smaller businesses to sell. The inlays are very nice and has depth in it. The neck has the thickness of a jackson guitar neck, not thin like an ibanez. The bubble really swelled up everytime I wet it with water or stain. It was really obvious. But when it dried, it shrunk flat. I followed the veneering tutorial on projectguitar and tried the ironing method to make the bubble go away. I put on a piece of foil over the area and then I heated it with the iron. I don't know if it worked perfectly, but at least it didn't swell again when I sprayed sanding sealer. The bubble isn't obvious anymore, but if I hold it at the right angle in the light and look very closely, I could see a very very slight hill from the glare. I bought it from here for $95 plus shipping. They don't always have it to sell though, but you can message them. I was lucky to get mine when they were selling them. This store here sells new replacement jem bodies all the time, but they're nearly $200. I'm almost done with clear coating, I'll post pics later.
