Johnny Foreigner
it will work, but i dont see the point. if you are mixing up some epoxy why not just glue it with that? fair enough. I will do that. thanks for the advice, all.
Cam
How did the 12th fret inlay turn out? Love the carve on this one too
Johnny Foreigner
How did the 12th fret inlay turn out? Love the carve on this one too pretty good. I actually got a teensy flake of maple dust in with the rosewood dust / epoxy mix, so after I'd sanded down the inlay I had to carve out that one little chunk and refill it. Should get it properly finished tonight. it's reaaaaallly subtle, as you might expect, but I really like that about it. You can only see it when it catches the light the right way, but it's also obviously on purpose. I'll stick pics up once I've reflattened the patch. I'm pretty happy with the carve - although a little worried that there are imperfections that are hard to see at the moment, but which will show up under the stain. Johnny Foreigner
pot and toggle holes drilled: and now need to figure out how to attached the piezo preamp pcb. i need to route a trench for it anyway, then I'm thinking of securing it to the wall of the cavity with a long screw and a piece of rubber tubing. any other inspired ideas?? PunkRockerLuke
They sell standoffs at radioshack. They might be a bit much for inside a guitar but go with what you want. Edited April 11, 2010 by PunkRockerLuke
Johnny Foreigner
They sell standoffs at radioshack. They might be a bit much for inside a guitar but go with what you want. that could definitely work. sadly the feed return spring on my drill press snapped last night, rendering the thing pretty useless. A quick look around t'internet hasn't thrown up any suitable replacements (It's a cheapo Skil 10" thing) so I'm waiting on a response from Skil customer service to see if it's salvageable. Only bought it at Christmas.
Johnny Foreigner
one more piece of advice needed - thinking ahead: i don't think I ever seen anyone dyeing the inside of humbucker routes when no pup ring is used. any practical reason for this? I don't really want to see naked wood around the pups, so I'm planning to dye the cavities black but would rather know now if that's a bad move. Akula
Cant see why it'd hurt... as long as the stain doesnt bleed over into the top.
ScottR
You are going to do black and sand back anyway right? Dyeing the inside of the routes at that time seems like the natural way to go. Good call . SR

Johnny Foreigner
thanks. finally got the replacement spring for my drill press so hoping to get a bunch done this weekend. Realized i also haven't posted any pics of the fretboard, which i sanded up through the grits and is now super super shiny.

SR yeah, just been beset by a lack of time, my drill press breaking - and then waiting for the part to arrive, and then the curse of leaving photos on the camera instead of uploading them. hoping to get close to stringing up this weekend. but we'll see how much time i end up with. Johnny Foreigner
these pics are from last week but I forgot to post them: the fretboard all finish sanded:
Johnny Foreigner
and with my drill press fixed: cavity finished: and cover in place: frets on:
Johnny Foreigner
so I had to pull all the frets. the slots were too shallow in spots and the frets just wouldn't go all the way down. now need to order a fret saw and deepen the slots slightly. very annoying. so to cheer myself up I did some fun stuff. installed tuners. had to drill different diameters on each side which took a little thinking about but wasn't too tricky
Johnny Foreigner
then i figured out my bridge placement and routed the channel for my piezo pickup and in place it sits a fraction above flush so it will be sandwiched between the bridge and the wood. tomorrow night i'm going to have a crack at the electronics. other than that i'm pretty much out of jobs until my fret saw arrives and I can reinstall the frets. i may sand the body a little bit smoother. I assume I'd be mad to glue in the neck before getting the frets in, right?
ScottR
Well, it certainly would be easier to trim, bevel, and finish the ends of the highest few if you didn't have to protect the body at the same time. SR

SR that's what I thought. Just have to suppress the impatience! stewmac deliver pretty quick mostly so i shouldn't have too long to wait. Johnny Foreigner
two and a bit months later..... I finally found some time to venture back into the basement. installed brass inserts in the pup routs: so I can direct mount the pups. had to drill out the 'ears' on the pups a little for this: and spent several hours sitting in the sun with an extension lead powering my soldering iron to get all this sorted: and routed the battery box
Johnny Foreigner
with all the fretting work done and dusted (LEAST favorite part of the build so far, by a country mile) i could chop a chunk out of the tenon ready for glueup: forgot to take any pictures of the neck being glued in, but that's where it stands now. hopefully I can get the bridge placement done tomorrow and think about starting the finishing process. Johnny Foreigner
thanks customguitar - it's been really nice to get back to it this weekend. there's definitely something addictive about the process and something deeply satisfying the presses both my man button and my musician button at the same time. more progress today. the clamps came off the neck and I was able to site the bridge - it lines up *almost* exactly so it sits dead on the center line and the outside strings line up with the fretboard all the way along. for someone of my limited attention to detail, that's a big win. last major job before finishing: on someone's recommendation i ages ago bought a cheap angle grinder and flap disc. made the job a lot easier. It's not the cleanest or prettiest heel/neck transition, but it's relatively smooth
