John Morciglio
This will be a "work in progress" report, more than a build thread. Not very good at remembering to take pics along the way. Shop is always a mess. After seeing the EB750 here. It was decided I should build a 650, and soon. Upon gluing up the 5-peice mahogony with .115" carbon laminates, Noticed there is enough material leftover for a "sister" build!!! Bass; neck-thru (5-peice mahogony/carbon) 32"scale ebony board hollowed/chambered body with a carbon cap for the top. pair of TV Jones Thundertrons for pickups. TOM style bridge with trapeze tailpeice. Plan on painting the back, front will be clear, (why I used the angled grain for the wings) Had enough neck laminate to do a set-neck build so, figured I should do a matching guitar. Guitar will have a deep tenon, set-neck semi-hollow body with the same carbon cap for top. Wilkenson roller bridge, TV Jones pups, (not sure what to try? matching tailpeice. Glued up the neck, rough cut the body this weekend, Left-over stock; Will have enough for another 14x20" body. JM
Prostheta
Looks like a good ol' bit of fun!
John Morciglio
The truss-rods came in last night!! I breifly thought about re-sawing the wings on the Bass to bookmatch for stain. Remembered the 4'x9' custom entrance doors I built with the same material. The painter used red and blue tint that came out like a brilliant purpleheart color. Joiners only 6" wide. Bandsaw switch is acting up. Drumsander is like me, old and worn out. Needs to be set-up/tuned better, or gutted for parts. The guitar will have a set-neck. So think I will stick with painting them both. What does anybody think about Aluminum for binding??? One thing that always bugged me was, plastic parts. Have always replaced anything I could with other materials. I was using diamondplate for pickguards back in the 80's. Some polished Al. might look nice with the carbon tops? Geoff St. Germaine
I think polished aluminum with the carbon top would look fantastic! Great looking build!
Prostheta
Good if you are able to form, bond and polish it!
John Morciglio
Had a couple hours to kill waiting for other parts to cure. Made some progress on Lil' Sis' ; The "big Les-Paul/Byrdland" look just screams COWBOY to me? Spent 78' to 81' in Houston. Ended up playing Honky-tonks with country guys. Hey, I was young :-) Might have to break out the leather Stetson and some flip-flops to bring back the 'good-ole-days! Bending metal is the only other thing I ever did for a living, besides carpentry (and composites for the last 5 years). Thanks JM
Prostheta
Good to see you got with the program, hauled some carbon and got onto the old Arpanet.
John Morciglio
Got a little time today. 5/8" pattern bit is getting dull. The 3/4" top-bearing bit had a flute missing from cutting aluminum with it. Truss rods in, headstock and neck roughed in. Had to buy more MDF for templates :-( Still need another 1/16" of depth on the 6-string. Will be skinning the interior (back), with aluminized carbon. The F-holes get lost in pics, so I put the silver carbon back there on some. Don't think I'll do Al. binding. Just want a clean transition from the carbon front to the painted back. Prostheta
Somehow I can't imagine taking a composites and aluminium trimmed instrument to a ****kicker gig!!
Geoff St. Germaine
Those are looking great!
John Morciglio
Got a little time in over the weekend. Starting to feel like I'm doing a "side job" and hope my boss doesn't catch me. boards are fretted and glued, cleaned the edges today. cut the aluminized glass and attatched it with 3M 77adhesive. will fill the cavity with clear topcoat resin later Guitar feels like it will be plenty light. The bass feels like a monster. Will relieve the neck-thru area between the pickups and bridge more. Thanks for looking! JM
Prostheta
Lining the insides? Do tell more. 2013 is shaping up to be a hollow body year!

John Morciglio
Progress; decided to only work on these when I'm not rushed. Started to make little mistakes from trying to sneak in a quick hour here and there. Got some tops molded; (rough-sanded for clearcotes). Heals and neck profiles are getting close. Still need to decide how big of radius on the roundover on the backs? Not sure about the binding yet. My biggest concern is the transition from carbon top to painted back? The aluminized glass inserts are to; 1 add some structure to the backs. (I made them a little thin trying to do a cleanup pass with the old bits). And to bring out the F-holes (or whatever) in photo's. Might run a lighting bolt cut-out. The EB-650 has the diamond cutout like a Trini Lopez or DG model. Lightning bolt cut-outs look pretty cool and sort of fit. Also liked some other patterns. Will mock-up some templates to decide. John Morciglio
Been a month since any update. These have been ready for finish for a while now. Got some System 3 on the guitar and letting them cure for 72hrs. Took them down to the basement on the seldom used pool table. Again, sorry about the cellphone pics. Found the camera and the batteru was dead. Have 5 builds ready for finish. The weather is finally starting to cooperate. JM
