ScottR
So how are you planning to treat that maple, when it comes finishing time? SR
Prostheta
With a winch and a lifter's belt? Wow, that'll be beautifully heavy!¡!
KnightroExpress
@ScottR I'll probably go natural with my usual oil, but I might think of something else by the time this one is ready for finish. @Prostheta Actually, this isn't nearly as heavy as you'd think! 4.75lb for the body, 1.5lb for the neck. I can live with 6.25lb so far
ScottR
You need to experience the joy of dyeing heavily figured maple even if you only do it on an off-cut. SR
KnightroExpress
Oh, I fully intend to try a few things with the offcuts. I also picked up about 4 necks worth of nicely curly maple in a trade, so expect to see a lot more maple in my future
Popular Post KnightroExpress
Phew! After a few long, dusty nights, I'm finally done sanding! We're up to P600 here, which is where I like to be before applying oil. I'm hoping to get the oil process started this weekend, stay tuned for some cool finish pics!
Prostheta
600 is a good place to be....have you ever ragged out the grain of Wengé and run it against a buffer with white blizzard polish? I did that to my old vise hub. It turned into a smooth but larger textured surface. It'd be interesting as an entire top. Check it out on some scrap.... Can't wait for the oiling myself either.... KnightroExpress
Thanks guys! I haven't tried that buffer method with wenge, but it sounds really interesting. If only I had a buffer....
Prostheta
Scotch bite or steel wool might work the same. Wengé likes to splinter and retain bits though.
KnightroExpress
I'm convinced that wenge just likes to do exactly what you don't want it to do at any given time. It's so uncooperative!
Prostheta
I hear you on that one. It refused point blank to work in the hub on my bench, and it even laughed at my attempts to epoxy it in place. Seriously?
KnightroExpress
This is just straight Odie's on an offcut from the maple 8. Pretty intense!
Prostheta
I'd like to know what colour contribution the oil gave it. I'm wondering which drying oil that might be....Safflower perhaps?
KnightroExpress
Check out this magnificent billet of Pale Moon I just grabbed. The splattery effect was way too interesting to pass up! It's thick enough for two separate fretboards, easily wide enough for a 7. This will make a beautiful pair of boards, for sure.
Prostheta
You know what? That calls for a guitar body painted to look like it was dipped in oil.
Prostheta
As in, petroleum....not Linseed....!!
ScottR
And there are color shifting finishes available with a similar metamerism to oil that would do the job nicely. SR
KnightroExpress
That would be really interesting! I have no idea what I'm going to do with that thing. Oh! The finish is pretty well completely cured on the limba/wenge guitar, I just need to make the nut and start assembly. Pics when I take some good ones.

SIMpleONe89
Dayum that looks awesome! I love that fretboard! Care to share how you routed such a nice switch slot? My last one wasn't perfect and a tad too wide.
KnightroExpress
Thank you! That switch slot is the result of drilling out as much as I could with a 1/16" drill bit and then very carefully cleaning the remainder out with a tiny file. Once the bulk was out, I had to fine tune for the switch throw to work properly. After spending about two hours swearing at a small slot, I went and designed a jig to make it much easier next time
