KnightroExpress
I've heard good things about Irongear, so it'll be nice to hear them in a methodical test, as I know you'll do. I agree with you on pickup makers, it's hard to find something truly bad. I'm not worried about the Mojos disappointing in any way, really. Prostheta
Well, if I get chance to upgrade the recording gear then definitely. I'm sure that they're either the good side of bland or the cheap side of good.
KnightroExpress
Well, as long as they're not on the bland side of cheap...
Prostheta
Well that's difficult to say isn't it? I mean, they seem to filter their published reviews rather than offering them warts and all. A good product should be able to stand of its own accord. I might be wrong on how they manage their outreach, but it does seem a little biased towards artificial hyperbole. I'd be happy dropping a couple of their Tesla Sharks with gold covers into the Lancaster build I've got on the back burner. Veijo will spin up a nice pickup designed to kick the front end out of a small watt valve for Nina's Tn'T SG though. I'll gift her a modded DSL-5 for christmas. Prostheta
Hey Andrew - get yourself together a proper extension base for the slotting box plus some Bessey or Destaco clamps. Did you catch the followup I did on the mitre box? My own workshop's a real shit tip right now. I've been painting the guitar rack cabinet so everything shifted across....now way do I have anywhere near as much space for crap as you right now! KnightroExpress
I actually semi-copied your slotting box setup. Mine is bolted down to an MDF base, and I even glued a magnet on for wrench retention. I've just got to add the toggle clamps and I'll be good to go! I actually just saw the followup piece on the extension base, and I'm thinking about redoing my base to be more efficient like yours. I'll post pics when it's done. Prostheta
You'll certainly be putting it to heavier use than myself! Can't wait to see how this all steps up your game. That V is just a prelude I think. A test.
KnightroExpress
I appreciate the confidence! Hopefully, it's well placed.... I've got a few gnarly projects in the pipeline, just waiting a few weeks to get them organized so I can properly introduce them
Prostheta
Hey, me placing my confidence in you is now YOUR problem now. The onus is on you to get living up to it....hahaha....
KnightroExpress
I know, dammit! I'll get back to work Small update today: Truss rod has been installed and fretboard is currently adhered and curing. More interestingly (from a photographic standpoint, at least), I cut a binding channel for the face of the V. I also spent some time organizing my wood pile and loaded up a rack. Also, did a bit of resaw work on some figured tigerwood and my favorite piece of pale moon ebony. The splattery effect is just too cool, I love that little slice of lumber.
psikoT
That timber pile is motivating... you lucky dog!

Actually that's a pretty good trait for a dog in my opinion....but you need your guitar to woof!
KnightroExpress
That board is going to go on a lightly extended scale 6 string with some semi-aggressive pickups, I'm hoping it brings some growl and bite to the table.
Prostheta
Not sure about PM Ebony. Definitely Wengé though. It tightens floppy necks which expresses itself as a less muddy low end. My go to for adding in that kind of character.
KnightroExpress
I'm considering wenge, I really liked the resonant feel it gave to the last guitar. I've still got time to decide, that one's not going to be started for a couple weeks, at the least.
Prostheta
If you have the material on hand, knock up a couple of necks and do an A/B comparison. Build them in parallel like for like. I mean, you're standardising your models and specs more or less, right? I'd see this as an opportunity to get into the swing of manufacture. KnightroExpress
I don't have any wenge large enough to do a neck blank, but I'll definitely give that a try for my next bolt-on. Fun stuff today: a bit of binding for this guitar. The top is going to be painted, sides left natural. Also, I started a maple-bodied 7 string. Prostheta
The guide bushing trick for clearing out the majority of waste before a finishing pass was going to be part of an article on edge routing, Andrew! I might have to make reference to this build as part of that since you did it in the table!
KnightroExpress
Haha I knew you'd like that pic. I cut the V body in the same fashion as an experiment, i just forgot to take pictures. The bushings are definitely great little things to keep around, I can easily see a few different ways to incorporate them into my workflow. Prostheta
Totally. I think they're a criminally-overlooked accessory.
KnightroExpress
I added the last bits of binding earlier today, so while the adhesive worked its chemical magic, I decided to test some things out on the maple body I started. Hogging out the control cavity before routing. I didn't take pics of the routing process, as my phone was running through the stereo..... you know, priorities. So this is a new method for me, I wanted to have a really nice counterbored hole for my flush-mount output jacks. I've moved away from the Electrosockets on the Voyager line, as they're just too bulky for the style and feel I want. So, on to the tools! I used a 1/4" bit to make a pilot hole. From there, my counterbores follow that pilot in two stages: 11/16" for the flanged area, followed by 1/2" for the barrel. Everything worked out really nicely, so I think this is what I'll stick with for the time being. And finally, counterboring for the neck screw washers with the same piloting setup and 11/16" bore. I even made a fun little slow motion video. Check it out! So that was a long way to say "I drilled some holes today, guys", but there it is. Thanks for taking a look!
