Belial Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 I will be getting an ash body blank at the end of next week. What I'm wanting to do is use an analine (waterbased) dye to blacken the wood some and then oil finish it.Will the dye affect how the oil soaks into the wood?I want to try and keep the feel of the wood.I could use some advise/opinions. westhemann Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 alexvdl did this same exact thing on his mockingbird Quote
Lex Luthier Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 I did a small test piece a month or two ago of an alchohol based dye stain with polimerized tung oil over it. The dye blead into the oil a little, just like it does with lacquer. It didn't affect anything, except the rag I used to apply the oil got kinda burgundy. Looked nice actually. Quote
drezdin Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 i'm very much a newbie, but i have actually done this. my very first project was this warmoth parts guitar. i used alcohol based dye and then finished with tung oil. http://www.drezdin.com/warmoth.html Quote

skibum5545 Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 Awesome looking guit. What's the black spot on the front of the guitar tho? Quote
drezdin Posted February 8, 2004 Report Posted February 8, 2004 the black spot is a carving in the body of a man burning in fire. Quote
Guest Litchfield Custom Gutars Posted February 9, 2004 Report Posted February 9, 2004 Very sharp looking answer to the question. The verdict is in and it is GOOD! Quote
