spindlebox
Hello to all! I am crafting myself a Rick-inspired 5 string bass, but I am having trouble finding that really cool "Horseshoe" bridge pickup for a 5 STRING. This is what I'm after: Does anyone know where I could get one for 5, or if I could maybe make this work - IF I build my own bobbins to fit inside? Maybe a bit of modification? Just don't know if it would be wide enough. Thanks in advance!
Bizman62
I wonder if you could make one partially by yourself by applying a single coil 5 string pickup into a self made horseshoe system?

Most likely, but the "self-made horseshoe system" is what is holding me up. Maybe I could make it out of wood?
Bizman62
Wood would give you the looks but I suppose there's some electromagnetic things going between the magnets and the metal horseshoe. Something similar to the ashtray cover of a Tele, perhaps. After a further study I learned that the horseshoes are also magnetic! http://www.frets.com/HomeShopTech/Products/Horseshoes/horseshoes.html and https://www.lollarguitars.com/pdfs/Installing-the-Lollar-Horseshoe-Bass-Pickup.pdf Instead of magnetizing the horseshoes the same effect might be doable by using two magnets on the bottom side, similarly to using bar magnets instead of magnetic polepieces. Further diving into your question reveals that actually the image you posted isn't a two piece horseshoe! That type is used for 4001 and 4003 and the handrest is even sold separately: https://boutique.rickenbacker.com/COVER-4003-TREBLE-PICKUP-CHR_p_565.html . The surrounding is also sold separately. This actually shows the construction: https://www.rockwall-guitars.de/shop/en/produkt/rickenbacker-highgain-pickup-bridge-fuer-4001-4003-baesse/ I wonder if this is the type of pickup used: https://retrovibe.co.uk/product/retrovibe-5-string-rickenbacker-style-hot-treble-pickup-10k-dc-resistance-15mm-pole-spacing/ I also wonder if the 5 string pickup might fit into the same bezel, at least the SlimJim by Retrovibe looks like there's plenty of space when used with a 4 string pickup. MiKro
Looks like it is just a covered/glorified pickup ring to me. Should be somewhat easy to machine once the measurements were made. Just my 0.02cents, MK
