GuitarMaestro Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 Does anyone know how Ibanez gets that chrome finish? Is it real chrome or some kind of special lacquer? Thanks for any info, Marcel! Quote
Biblical Posted May 5, 2004 Report Posted May 5, 2004 its real chrome, some body posted up a paint that can get the same effect, try searching Quote
canuckguitarist Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 also, the body isn't wood. It's called 'luthite'. These basses are made using the same material. Quote
skibum5545 Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 www.alsacorp.com has chrome finishes. Next time, use the search feature first! Quote
GuitarMaestro Posted May 6, 2004 Author Report Posted May 6, 2004 Thanks for the answers. Especially that alsacrop stuff sounds interesting. Would it be possible to apply real chrome to wood as well? Quote
GEdwardJones Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Thanks for the answers. Especially that alsacrop stuff sounds interesting. Would it be possible to apply real chrome to wood as well? No, the original JS chrome guitars (JS2?) were made using wood, but only a couple saw the light of day, because the wooe "breathes" and the chrome doesn't have enough give and eventually flakes/peels/cracks over time. In fact, if you check Joe's number 1 chrome guitar you'll notice that it has a strip of gaffer tape between the pickups where the chrome is peeling. So I guess you can, but it won't hold up well. darren wilson Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 Good luck finding a plating shop that will even attempt it. Ibanez ultimately went with luthite for the production models, but even on those, the chrome is quite fragile. I wish they'd just do one out of polished aluminum. Apparently Joe has one. Quote
MikeB Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 hehe, found the site i was after!!! these guys plate guitars knew i had seen it somewhere!! http://www.gunsgirlsandguitars.com/home.html damn site addy, what a lie!!! virtually no talent Mike! Quote

If you're going to try it, you might give Duplicolor's instant chrome finish a shot. It's not real chrome, mind you, and I don't know how well it will work, but it'll certainly be far easier than trying to electroplate a piece of wood. http://www.duplicolor.com/products/gold-chrome.html Quote
GuitarMaestro Posted May 6, 2004 Author Report Posted May 6, 2004 Thanks for all the answers. Exactly what I was looking for. I guess plating wood is prone to cause problems later as GEdward wrote. Maybe with a thick clearcoat underneath the chrome it would work. I was just interested how Ibanez does it.... I don't want to attempt a chrome finish myself, but these chrome laquers/enamels sound very interesting. Maybe I will buy some and test how it looks on scrap.... Quote
Elton Posted May 6, 2004 Report Posted May 6, 2004 that seems like a cool idea, if i were to get this instant gold/chrome thing would i have to clear coat it?? or can i just leave it the way it is? is there buffing involved to get it to shine after u chrome it? Quote

The shiny cap was really appealing. But that stuff is just silver good paint - it sure ain't chrome. Quote
