litchfield Posted May 29, 2004 Report Posted May 29, 2004 Can this be none now(rough sanding) or when I get to finish sanding? Help! I have never had to deal with this. It is in quilted maple. I dont know how well the pics show it, but they are 1/16" to 1/8" deep. What can I do? Quote
westhemann Posted May 29, 2004 Report Posted May 29, 2004 you can't see them in the picture but if you thouroughly cleaned the wood and it pinholed my book says you need to thin the finish,so that the bubbles have a chance to pop out Quote
litchfield Posted May 29, 2004 Author Report Posted May 29, 2004 thin the finish? I spritzed it with water. It is still pretty much raw Quote
westhemann Posted May 29, 2004 Report Posted May 29, 2004 them what do you mean by pinholes?are to talking about the pores?if so just seal it Quote
litchfield Posted May 30, 2004 Author Report Posted May 30, 2004 Yeah, big pores. Just sealer? Can I still stai black and sand back? Quote
westhemann Posted May 30, 2004 Report Posted May 30, 2004 Yeah, big pores. Just sealer? Can I still stai black and sand back? yes...but be very light with the dye.... figured maple always has these pores...it is what makes the dye soak in deeper in some areas than others, creating the whole stain and sand back tecqnique Quote
GuitarMaestro Posted June 2, 2004 Report Posted June 2, 2004 Yeah, big pores. Just sealer? Can I still stai black and sand back? Just to avoid misunderstandings here: You can ONLY apply the stain black sand back technique BEFORE sealing the pores. The stain should go on the top before anything else. P.s.: The contours of the guitar look still very rough and unrefined. The outside of the shape does not flow in one line.....it has still many edges and holes....I would correct that BEFORE finishing.... Quote

The outside of the shape does not flow in one line.....it has still many edges and holes....I would correct that BEFORE finishing.... Exactly what I was going to say. I'd have to assume that you're not actually ready for finishing yet though - is that correct Litch? The edges are one thing, the center line still looks like it needs to be scraped or sanded to remove the excess glue. I expect that you were just getting ahead of things a bit and trying to figure the pin hole issue out before getting back to that stuff? Actually - I'm sure you were aware of those things. As for the pin holes - I can't see them either. Quote
litchfield Posted June 3, 2004 Author Report Posted June 3, 2004 exaxctly. I need to do a lot more sanding before I am to finishing, just wanted to know if I needed to worry about this now or later Quote
