Woah. You know those toothpick creations they make you do in elementary school art class? Somebody should give THAT a shot...

...but I've got that beat (not a guitar story). Back in the day before electron microscopes (pre-1968), I know of a geologist who handpicked with tweezers sub-millimeter grains of a mineral called pigeonite out of crushed basalt, just to get enough for the first-ever chemical analysis of this mineral. He had to select and then examine every single grain on a 3-axis optical microscope to verify the identity of the mineral grain before adding it to the pile. He spent an hour at it every day for 7 years. Hisashi Kuno.
