  1. So, i kept having way too much trouble with the redwood burl guitar. I knew i was never going to get the finish right on it is. So i bit the bullet and stripped the finish and veneer off of it. The top pieces dont match as well as the back, because i put the good side to the back, since it was supposed to be covered with veneer.
  2. I guess that was all i had to say. I worked on it again today. I took it completely apart and started from scratch. The base plate was completley bent and crooked. loosened everything and completely re leveled it. For once, i got something to work after i thought it was done for sure. It actually works better than before. Well, aside from the original problem that i posted this thread about. But i would rather have that problem then not have it at all.
  3. Yeah, that is exactly what i plan to do. I have a log of every expense. I cant file those expenses until i file my regular taxes though. Since i chose semiannually for business taxes, i have to pay by the end of this month. So i have to wait until i file regular taxes to write all that off.
  4. So this is my first year dealing with business taxes. I also spent more this year on supplies than i ever have. I knew it was a lot, but dang... I didnt make much more over what i spent. kinda rough to think about. I also have to pay a decent chunk in taxes this month too, since i picked semiannually to pay. i think i will change it to quarterly this year.
  5. I'll check it out. but i have pretty much written it completely off as loss. Whenever something like this happens, i NEVER figure it out. so i dont really have any hope in it. PS, it has been a MASSIVE pain leveling bodies by hand again. Having to sand 1/32" deep tearout from mahogany by hand sucks.
  6. New neck blank: Another body i worked up a few days ago. Very thin, ash topped SS, carved.
  7. Not a problem. Maybe i'll look into something different next time i buy fretwire. Work has been slow going. I glued one side of the binding on the neck for the SS last night. Will get to the other half today. Then i have to wait for fretwire to get here. So in the meantime, i will work on another neck.
  8. I was pretty sure that warmoth's fretwire was dunlop. They use the same measurements as dunlop. I guess i am being really picky. But it just worked well buying from them. enough for about 5-6 guitars for aroudn 40 bucks shipped before. And it was pre radiused.
  9. You should buy direct from Jescar. Much cheaper and excellent quality. Just looked, and it is not cheaper at all. 10 bucks for only 25 pre cut pieces. I can get a neck and a half or 3/4 out of 1 neck length from warmoth.
  10. Man, warmoth has almost doubled the price of fretwire in just a few months! Last time i ordered it in the summer it was around 6 or 7 bucks per neck length. Now, 13 bucks! That really sucks. I always thought that was the best deal.
  11. Those are all dang sweet guitars man. That ebony topped one is as slick as it gets.
  12. This is going to come out quite lovely, if i do say so myself.
  13. Yeah, i agree. I used to barley put them on my necks. but now i kinda of go overkill on it. I am going to go back to a slightly smaller and different shape volute on my next few. Not so round, but more triangle shape. I only made one that got in the way. I just made the taper to it too large.
  14. I have always wanted to. I love bubinga so much. I would love to do a super strat with a thick figured bubinga top, with super deep carve. Or a LP in the same way. It is just hard to find for a decent price in real thicknesses.
  15. And speaking of veneer, I picked up a lot of 4 sheets of massively figured bubinga. They were wide and long enough to where i know i could get at least 2 out of each sheet. but i actually found a way to get 3 different body shapes cut out of just 1 sheet. So 3 bookmatched bodies and still enough for headstocks out of just 2 sheets of bubinga. Should be sweet! Pics tomorrow when the explorer is out of the clamps.
  16. Thanks man. Yes, the center stripe is paduak. It is such a great wood to use for extreme contrasts. I hadn't really planned on putting any more into the body. The headtsock is now covered with a matching piece of the body wood. Pros, All the veneer i have bought, from numerous sellers, has always been listed as "1/42" thick. I never really questioned it.
  17. Yours looks a lot further towards the nut than his does. The point of his is like mid fret. The point of yours looks like it is behind the nut, just tapering up to it.
  18. looked at those side profiles of the volute, i really think you need to knock more of it down on the first fret side. It is half way down the first fret. A volute should be pointed to directly behind the nut. That is really going to limit your hand on the first fret.
  19. Thanks. It is 1/42" thick. There is no need to start that heavy on veneer. It is already pretty smooth. I start at 150 and go 220, 320 and 400.
