Yeah, I never understood why the 7 string on Monster... I just realized that since basists rarely (dont flame me on this, I'm talking about normally) play anything other than single notes, I'd probably just downtune the entire bass. duh...

Good question. I dunno. I suppose for open string riffs (at least that's why I'd do it with a 7 string guitar, but I don't have one or really want one) But I was watching the DVD for St. Anger (the DVD at least makes the album worth having, though I like a few songs). The guitars are tuned Dropped D (down a step, and even more on two songs) and the basist Robert Trujillo is playing the open string riffs on the E (sounding C). I just wondered what the low B string would be tuned to.

I'm not a bassist (I'm barely a guitarist), but I was talking with a friend about dropped D tunings. I realized that I wouldn't know how to tune a 5 string bass for Dropped D. Do you drop the E and low B strings? How does that work?

Am I the only one that immediately went: "Uh, huh huh huh... He said purple one." There were so many jokes that my mind blew a fuse, and I can't even give a decent response.

I know this isn't what you're looking for but... My friend left his guitar at my place for a week or two. He's a major practical joker, so I re-wired his guitar for him. I changed the pickup selector switch to work in different positions (neck works in the mid spot, bridge works in neck spot, down setting is kill, etc...) I also switched his volume and tone pots, and removed the grounding to the bridge. Am I evil? He didn't even notice for a week after he remembered he left it at my house.

Try rolling 2 4-12 cabinets through your living room. It'll freak out your TV. Computer tip: Don't set your hard drive on a speaker cabinet. Bad idea if you plan on using any information from it. (same with video tapes, floppy disks...)

Yeah. Thanks Wes. That was my first "build" (or rebuild I guess). I'm same as you Johnny. I've done electronics for a long time. I found the project guitar on ebay, and just sorta started it. I'm not sure you need a tutorial, it's pretty straight forward. I brushed on 2 coats of tung oil (about 6-8 hours inbetween coats). Then two or three days later, I used a block of beeswax that I found at a knitting store (of all places) and "colored" it on, and buffed it out with a rag. I assume you can use a paste wax too, but never tried. Here's the in-production stuff on the explorer: Phil's Page of Explorer Fun

It looks good. Why do so many people put other brand names on their guitars? I don't understand that.

Yeah it was pretty cheap. Less than $20. The nice thing is that it seals the wood pores. I like how it feels, they use a light tung oil on a lot of "natural" necks too. I don't know much about using it over stain, but I know someone used a coat of tung oil over a black stain (or flat black paint) on a guitar of the month earlier this year, so I imagine it could be done pretty easily.

My strat came standard with the Gold Lace Sensors. I sort of like them, they're a bit more even than standard Fender pickups. The vintage noiseless ones are pretty good. Pretty much anything Clapton uses in his guitars should be great!

On the explorer in my avatar, I used tung oil and beeswax. (not exactly a varnish, but sort of the same thing) It was pretty easy, no runs or anything, it worked in 2 coats. It's a nice "satin" type finish. The wax really helps bring out the grain, and evens out the finish.

There are a few other threads about Metal Pickups from not too long ago (4 weeks at most). If you look back there are a few good suggestions about non EMG metal pickups. It might be in the electronics forum though...

Not really. They're very clean and fairly bright, but not harsh. I have them in several guitars.

Seriously? Do simple dust masks work, or do you need respirators? Brian, do you mean the fiberglass resin instead of the MOP, or in addition to?

For me, keeping them setup isn't too big a deal. They don't shift much, because they don't travel much. Mostly just home studio stuff. They don't get new strings as often as they should though...

I still (and probably forever) will rave about the Gibson stock 500T. It's in my stock Explorer, and it blows any of my other guitars with EMGs or Duncan Distortion or anything else out of the water. I read bad things about them every once in a while, but in my experience, you can over distort it, and it starts sounding bad. The only bad thing I can say about them is that you need to shield and ground the guitar really well.
