  1. Maggot: I'd trust AllParts quality. Kinda hoping for ebony (picky git that I am!). Jaycee: I don't want to try and make the bridge on the first acoustic. There's a pretty big learning curve as-is. That "extra holes" idea is worth investigating. Yes, I have been all over eBay. The only ones regularly available are from a seller who only sells low-end stuff. However... the mod suggestion opens up a lot more possibilities.
  2. Where can I get a well made acoustic 12-string bridge? Allied Lutherie, LMII, and Stew-Mac don't carry them.
  3. 'Bout damn time these bodies see the light of day.
  4. Walnut is awesome for the neck OR body. It's also a dream to work with.
  5. A fat roundover would look pretty good. It's more subtle than a full blown carve, but still adds a lot to the body. It's extremely comfortable to play, too.
  6. I think I finally have it looking pretty good. Once I'm positive, I'll post some pics.
  7. If you want a kit and can drop $400-$500, look into Carvin's kits. I have one, and everything about them is top quality - including the hardware. Mine was LITERALLY able to be screwed together and playable minutes after it got to my house. From what I've seen/read, Saga kits are playable, but like Wez said, the hardware is cheap. You might be just as well off getting the neck, body, hardware, and electronics separately. eBay always has bodies & necks that have been parted out, as well as factory hardware & pups. Most of the time there's nothing wrong with them, the owner just chose to upgrade to what they felt was a better part. The pickups are where the real bargains can be found. If you got all the parts separately, you could make one for the $250-$350 range.
  8. You get what you pay for. I can almost guarantee that it's plywood. If you want a cheap beater, either take a look in a pawn shop or look into the low-end Dean, Yamaha, Peavey, Ibanez, or BC Rich entry-level instruments. They'll be playable for around $125-$175 new. You can sometimes find them on sale at Guitar Center for under $100.
  9. Quite a handy little tip there. Gotta remember that one.
  10. I agree. Don't buy it. If you're looking for a junker body to tinker with, look on eBay. Heck - send me a PM and we can talk about a poplar body. Just don't get a trashed out plywood P.O.S.
  11. The color is looking a bit blotchy at this point. IDK if it's uneven coverage, weird lighting, or what. I'm not done messing with it yet, so there are no worries for me at this point. I'll probably be getting another can of paint. The neck is nowhere near the final product, but it's a dang sight closer than it was two days ago.
  12. Ya ain't dead yet, so there's still hope.
  13. I'm with you. When I saw the 3 participants, I was like "*** did that poser do to get to hang out with the other two? He hasn't earned the right to be there yet." Still, when I saw it, it made me want to at least listen to them and give them a fair shot.
  14. I tried that with both Slayer & Pantera. I just couldn't see what the big deal was. There are plenty of bands that have a handful of songs that I like, but the rest of it isn't for me: Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Judas Priest just to name 3. Large catalog of music, but I don't care about most of it. As we "speak", I'm trying out the White Stripes. I usually don't care for bands that rely on gimmicks, but I recently watched "It Might Get Loud", and that convinced me that they're worth at least giving a shot.
  15. Back blackburst painted with the first coat of clear The original plan was to bolt the neck on with ferrules. After the whole thing was constructed, I decided that there wasn't enough meat at the end of the heel to secure the neck in place, so it's now a set neck.
  16. Fretboard radiused, buffed to 4000, soaked in linseed oil, fretted (but not dressed), and side dots I mentioned right off the bat that I was going to paint this one purple. Inspiration hit me when I went into an automotive store on a whim, looking for the right shade of purple. I'm sure I've heard some of y'all yammering on about Dupli-Color and automotive paint, but I honestly never paid any attention. The conversation always centered around spraying, and since I can't do that, there was no point in it for me. I saw this shade of metallic purple and I knew this Rhoads needed to be this color. In order for the colored metallic to really pop, the surface needed to have a chrome or chrome-like cast first. Fortunately, the can on the left is for just such a purpose. The directions said it'd work plastics & metal, so I dropped the $8/can and experimented on some scrap maple. It turned out OK, and there were no issues with the water-based poly I'll be putting over the top, so I'm all good to go. It looks pretty dang cool as-is. I'm looking forward to getting the purple on it this weekend.
  17. You know it. There's no sense in even pretending that we don't steal each others ideas. It's all good.
  18. I don't give a shite if you like them or not. Like I said, they're not for everyone, and that's OK. I just couldn't let you say something about Neil that wasn't true.
  19. Sorry Narc, but you really are off about Neil. He doesn't talk to people and doesn't do interviews because he's extremely reserved with his feelings and not at all sociable to strangers. He doesn't feel that such a fuss should be made about him that anyone should think so highly of him. He's embarrassed with the (in his mind) undue attention the fans want to give him. He appreciates his fans, he simply doesn't understand them or enjoy their attention. Also, consider the lyrics he wrote for Limelight: "I can't pretend a stranger is a long awaited friend." Geddy & Alex are the outgoing, personable ones who enjoy interacting with the fans. I'm not set off or offended that someone doesn't like Rush. There are a LOT who don't . They're not a band that everyone will get what they're doing, like Led Zeppelin is for example. They don't write lyrics for the typical rock fan, and they don't compose according to the current trend. They're called "the thinking man's rock band" for a reason. All I've ever asked of someone is that they acknowledge their talent and abilities as musicians, not to actually like their music. It's also ironic that you stopped listening to them when you did. It was right after that when they stopped making the epics and "prog rock" type of songs. And I've always through that Jeff beck was really over rated. I've tried to get into him a few times, but he just doesn't impress me. Same with Alan Holdsworth.
  20. which is a bad thing because? overkill It just looks really thick & clunky to me. But I'm' not buying it, I'm not playing it, and I'm not making it, so what i think doesn't matter.
  21. yep Landing a Stew-Mac miter box, fretting template, and fret saw for $100 on eBay was what really made it all possible.
