  1. yeah, I've looked through Seymour Duncan's site, I used one of their diagrams to wire my rotary switch. But they don't have the new wiring I want. And thanks a lot Ansil, that is a bit confusing but I'm pretty sure I understand it all. I do understand the electronic theory of guitar wiring, but when it comes to making a position on a switch, I have no idea. I'll just look at the diagrams on the Duncan website for a while maybe I'll get it. A picture/diagram would be amazing, and not just for myself but I think this seems like such an awesome wiring for an HH guitar I can't believe I can't find it anywhere... Also, I don't have a lever switch yet - I'm waiting till I find a schematic for this and then I'll buy whatever's appropriate.
  2. ?.. If nothing else, could someone recommend a good website that explains wiring 5-way switches? I can't seem to find one.
  3. I'm building a strat with two SD humbuckers, and I set it up with PRS-style rotary switching. I thought it would be cool to have a rotary switch, turns out it's not so cool. So, I thought up something else, and was wondering if it's possible, and if so how to do it: A five-position lever switch, the same as a PRS rotary except for the center position: 1 Bridge humbucker 2 Inner pickup coils, parallel 3 Both humbuckers, parallel 4 Outer coils, parallel 5 Neck humbucker Then, a push-pull volume pot for series/parallel switching, and a push-pull tone pot for phase switching. Those two things should only affect the positions using both pickups, so I count a total of 14 different sounds. I'm pretty sure I can figure out the push-pull pots, but when it comes to figuring out blade switches I have no idea what's going on. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks, Drew
  4. Anyone know where to get the schematic for PRS rotary switch sounds on a 5-way blade switch? Positions: 1 Bridge pickup 2 Inner pickup coils, parallel 3 Outer coils, series 4 Outer coils, parallel 5 Neck pickup and yeah I know Stewmac sells a switch for just that, but I want to do it from scratch and understand how it works... Thanks
  5. I had the exact same question actually...
  6. Two Questions: 1. Could anyone else add some opinions about swimming pool routes? 2. I was wondering if a swimming pool route (on a strat) might make it easier to get some harmonic feedback like with a semi-hollow guitar? If I mounted the pickups to the pickguard, do you think it would at least push it a little in that direction? I can imagine it either doing that or sounding horribly cheap.
  7. OK well, I guess my only question is this: Do you think an alder body, all-maple neck and stainless steel frets should sound alright with humbuckers? I'm planning on using low impedance Alnico II pickups, so I think it should be alright.... but hey I could be wrong.
  8. Oh yeah I know all about Trey's guitars. I'm not sure if all his Languedocs are koa but I'm sure his main one is. Still, I'm set on a strat. All the guitars I've had before were pretty nice and fragile, I want a guitar I can throw around and beat up for years and years... I'm not trying to copy his tone exactly, just get as close as I can I guess when I'm playing that style of music with a strat, but I'd still like to be able to play more Fender sounding stuff like The Band and Jeff Buckley... hmmm. Maybe forget I said anything about that. I just want a good versatile tone in a strat with humbuckers.
  9. I'm starting a strat project soon, and I'm definitely putting humbuckers in it. I'm also using an all-maple neck with stainless steel frets, and I'm not sure if an alder body will make it too bright.... Why are most humbucking guitars mahogany or warmer toned woods? Are humbuckers actually brighter than alder, and the wood change is to compensate for that? Or could I get a more strat-like sound out of humbuckers putting them in alder? If I had to narrow down the tone I want to one player, I'd say Trey Anastasio.... but I wouldn't mind a bit in the strat direction tonally. Don't want the twang though. I'm coating the wood with a solid color so the wood type is only for tone. Any advice?
  10. Has anyone tried spraying an amber tinted clear over white finish? If so, could you post some photos?
  11. But then, I couldn't ask them to make an exact copy of a Fender, right? It's illegal?....
  12. Does anyone know the exact differences between USA Custom Guitars' Strat bodies/necks and real Fender ones? For the neck, is it only that little point on the round part? And are the bodies exactly the same?
  13. Hmmm.... I also want to install pickups without mounting rings, fender style. I'm building a strat, and I want to have pickups like the Tele Deluxe: I'm using nickel-covered seymour duncans. Does anyone know how they can be installed this way? It looks like they're attached to the pickguard, but without mounting rings. I don't care about (and don't understand) the double screws on the tele, seems like there should only be one on each side. Some tele deluxes have only one, and for my strat I don't care either way.
  14. .... What's the difference between nickel and chrome?
  15. Wow thank you! That may be the last thing I needed to know before building my dream guitar... hopefully...
  16. OK, so you said you sprayed on the shellac, but would it be ok just to brush or rub it on? I don't have spraying equipment... and would it have any problems with a poly or nitro clear coat on top?
  17. Yeah, that looks perfect! I think I'll just mix it with water instead of shellac though.
  18. OK so if I go with poly paint, what kind of paint should it be exactly? Or what's a good brand for stuff like that? Should I just go to a general paint store like Miller or Sherwin-Williams? Or should I have the autobody place do the color coat (it's probably more expensive though, huh)?
  19. I have a simple question about that tutorial by Dave K. Was the tutorial written before Stewmac came out with an Amber Colortone stain? If mixing the three colors is noticeably better than just the amber stain, I may go for it, but maybe the Amber stain is just newer than the tutorial..... I just don't want to spend $50 when I could spend $16
  20. I have the same question, so instead of making a new topic I'll just bump this old one up to the top... I found the exact color I want for my guitar at Reranch, so it's a spray nitro. But I'd like a poly clear coat (the 2-part automotive poly), because I don't want it to yellow and I'm doing clear poly on the neck anyway. Is that ok? I don't mind a long cure time before the poly, but how long?. And does it make a difference that the nitro I'm using is only the color coat, not clear?
  21. I'm building a strat and I can't decide on the trem type. 6 screws or 2? I've head people say get the vintage one, but when I ask why they say "because it's vintage!" It seems like the two-point makes more sense (because, even though I've owned vintage bridges, I just can't understand how they work, pivoting on screws fully encircled by the bridge plate! Wouldn't it have to dent the body? Ugh... I can see it working, but either the wood or the bridge plate is bending, right? Neither sounds healthy) But I also don't understand why you would want saddles with offset intonation screws. What's your opinion?
  22. I sold my first strat to a friend, and he tied it to a car a drove around a bit. It didn't destroy it like I'd expected. It's crazy how much a strat can take, for example a Stevie Ray Vaughan standing on the body, lifting up the neck, and repeatedly letting it smash back into the stage.
  23. Another thing: I'm making a logo following the tutorial on this website (on a transparency). If I add a stain to the finish, will it react differently to the transparency as opposed to direct contact with the wood? Will it look different on the wood, or does the stain just stay entirely within the finish layer? Does anyone have experience with that?
  24. How about this: I'm building a strat and I want to write my family name "Herron" on the headstock, in Fender's font. I'm not worried about Fender there, but there is actually a company called Herron Guitars. As far as I can tell, he doesn't write Herron on the headstock, just a little symbol. Now, I don't expect him to sue me over making a "Herron" guitar. I'm just wondering if it is legal for me to do it. I mean, it's my name!
  25. I know, I was just following the Project Guitar tutorial. If I'm doing it at an auto shop, I wouldn't have much chance to test the shades of yellow would I? I don't really know how it would work at an auto paint shop. Especially if I'm not providing my own finish. I don't know, I'll figure it out. If they let me test the color on some scrap wood then sure I'll mix it with the finish.
