  1. Lets finish this thread.... I know these are posted in the 2013 thread but this thread should be complete. Sentinel Maple neck with Ebony laminates Gabon Ebony Fretboard Gabon Ebony top and headplate Limba Body Locking tuners Hipshot Bridge Guitar Logistics Diablo Humbuckers
  2. Glad I could help ??? 0_o +1. Flake finishes are not meant to be "fixed". Painful.
  3. Oh that would be a really nice idea. Clean the shop. Build cabinets. Organize. Build a Veneer Press. Finish my bench. Sounds like a good plan.
  4. It would be nice to have a paint booth to avoid the humidity but it took up too much space in the shop.
  5. Oh yeah "high" alright. Like Norville "Shaggy" Rodgers who owns a talking dog "high". If I could get past all the distractions I might be able to tie up the old builds here and start on some new stuff... I have been in finishing mode so no dust allowed in the shop. Once clear I can get some of these multiscales off my plate.
  6. +1 It happened in the last three coats so I think you are right. Should pop right out when I sand out the orange peel.
  7. No one hates woody the woodpecker Mr. Horsepower! I think the blush remover/flattener solvent soaked into the first coats of sealer. So as it flashed off the top dried quicker than the under coats. It was probably my fault for trying to get tricky. Unfortunatley I live in NC and it is always humid here. The last coat blushed a bit. I am terrified to use the blush remover again so I plan to sand it and buff it while hoping to free the trapped vapor in the process.
  8. Next up its wookiee time. Got distracted... right in the middle of this some friends showed up for a tour of the shop. I will take some more shots this week.

  10. You know I will probably have to take this apart again but it is nice to get a good look at it.
  11. Recessed bridge plate fits nice and I like the all black pickups.
  12. Time to wrap up some builds. Clear a spot for the ground wire
  13. A lot darker this time around. And some annoying orange peel to boot. I will let it cure for a week or so and sand it out again. The Mohawk pre-cat lacquer hardens pretty quick so I may be able to buff it out shortly.
  14. Time to sand it back. First attempt was to level out the wrinkle. No dice. "Had to go all the way". Ok lets spray this one more time...
  15. Headstock stickers Disaster. The gun spit on the last coat and made two little dibbles. When I hit it them with the sand paper both chipped out leaving a really small spots with maple showing. So in order to fix them I put a small bit of black on a toothe pick and dabbed it on the spots. Next I sanded them a little to get them down. It was still a very obvious fix. I tried to hit it with a shot of Flattner and then it happened... I must have used a little too much flattner as it caused the finish underneath to buckle causing a wrinkle in the burst. Livid I had to walk away. Nothing I would do at this point will save it. Probably make it much worse. Anger and paint do not mesh. At this point I am not sure what to do. I may see if I can fix it. Worst case I have to sand it all back and start over again. Good thing is I have three coats of clear under it. This will help prevent cut through when I sand back.
  16. Black knobs, better pics, and enter GOTM for next month.
  17. Guy who votes for his buddy(the home team) no matter what. Wes is the man. Normally I try to use the "If they were in a pile and free but you can only have one" principal. However with these three I would have tried to take them all... so I had to excersice some personal initiative.
  18. Everyone did a good job and I would like to play each of them. Stu - Put some plates on her she is showing. Overall I really like this guitar. Very similar to a multiscale I built last year. Fretman_2 - That is one professional looking guitar. If that was in my stable it would probably be the goto for a hard night of whiskey and rock. Scott - I hate to be a homer but I had to vote for this The volute was sick.
  19. The problem I have with a one piece flat headstock (especially on ERGs) is the right downforce at the nut. The sharp break angle always seems to cause the tuning to be "grabby" for lack of a better word. With an angled headstock the string has one friction point. The nut. With a flat headstock the string has 2 friction points (the nut and the retainer) and a very sharp angle . On the really large strings the large winds like to get stuck as they pass through the angles... There are work arounds, rollers, making sure everything is rounded and smooth. The problem with the retainers is that you need to have a large enough radius on the friction point so that the string always has more than 2 winds touching for smooth tuning.
  20. The flat headstock is going to be tricky to get enough break angle/down force on the nut. Read a few of the build threads here to see how to do it. I think I covered it pretty well in this thread... can't remember now. -->
  21. Angle the headstock with a scarf joint. Or use a flat headstock and make a nice string tree from aluminum I would oil the fretboard with Danish oil or Behlens Teak Oil. Behlens Fretboard Oil works great as well. I would avoid the wax. 3 coats of Danish oil will be enough and you won't have to de-wax it to touch it up.
  22. Yeah I wonder who started carving those things? Prolly some old hacker backyard chainsaw wielding drunken master builder Agreed. It won't fall off. As long as you know you are "doing it wrong" I am good.
  23. Use epoxy designed for flow. I use System 3 Mirror Coat for this. It is designed to be pored on something and flow out.
