  2. well,i did not notice all of the flaws you pointed out,greg...but i think that is because i noticed the headstock problems and read the bias against hard finishes(which i agree and have often saidis usually because the person can't do them properly...they are much more difficult for sure)and filed him away as someone i don't care for and never went back. i can't see going through his entire gallery to find these flaws though...maybe because i am lazier than i used to be...but these days i spend most of my time tryiong to improve my own building. but i agree...if a self labeled "pro" on this board posted a build like that,he would be lambasted for sure...i must admit i am a bit confused about perry's stand on this one...maybe there is some sarcasm there i am not catching?but it's true i don't care that much about it.
  3. there was a guy that spammed the site a few years ago offering to do this for only a coupleof grand if you would just shipo your guitar to him in italy or some such place. i thought it was nonsense then, and i still do...but i think a guitar does "settle in" over time
  4. a paint shaking machine would shake your guitar apart. look...i think that is MOSTLY hooey...but what they are doing is vibrating it with speaker style vibrations...basically air.not a mechanical shaker at all. my guitars all sit in the same room with my huge-ass amp...so IF there is any truth at all to this voodoo, then my guitars would all be broken in in less than a year anyway at the volume i play.
  5. i know..but you still have to stick it in the opposite direction...
  6. well...i can try it... knucklehead...do you ever have fretting problems?it said somewhere to make the slots slightly wider...but i don't see why that would be needed, since the fret tang compresses anyway... you say you like the tonal benifits....it feels less "snappy" than ebony to me...could you explain your take on what it sounds like to me?
  7. hehe...point taken,soap...but that guitar does make my eyes cross...all of the holes combined with that pattern makes it hard to focus on. this is simply a case of a guy marketing his guitar building philosophy agressively.much like ed roman... i can't say i find anything in his gallery appealing at all...but i don't think i am his target audience.only thing i really have a problem with is that samurai headstock...his #1 and #6 tuners have to wrap opposite of the other strings...aside from being ugly,i just think i would hate that(matter of fact i know i would...i made that mistake on a seven a while back)
  8. after some tweaking,i am going to have to go out on a limb and say that the kahler trem would work better with a neck angle...the geometry of the cam/saddle/string relationship is such that it seems to be built for a higher string to body relationship than a floyd...of course recessing it like maiden did would work,or just raising the entire neck(but that would be ugly) i have my action down to about 1.5 mm at the 12th...but that is really pushing it without a neck angle...to get it lower as i have it i will need to swap out the round headed phillips screws at the saddle with some flatter ones, and shorten the allen screws from underneath...which i will do after i work out all of the other li8ttle bugs. by the way...gotoh locking tuners suck...they are designed very badly and take longer to string up than just regular old tuners...
  9. extra bulk at the heel would not have increased the glueing surface. anyway...it's all strung up and i played it a bit last night.it plays very well and sounds great, but i do have some tweaking to do. bubinga has a tone i did not expect.it has much more bottom end than i thought it would.it's similar to mahogany, except much clearer, with more highs. anyway...if i can ever get rid of this headache i will take some pics.
  10. it is supposed to do that...it gives more support to the neck. on the next few i make,i am going back to neck through,so it won't be needed
  11. label it whatever you wish.just be aware that nobody will agree with you,and that everyone has a different opinion of what belongs under these useless labels.and that is exactly my point.nerds have no place defining metal into a million different sub-genres and thrash is very, very broad.just look at slayer and exodus.completely different, yet both thrash. i will make my view clear....here is my motto "shut up and listen to the music" or if you prefer "take your sub-genres and flush them down the toilet with the rest of the (beep)" hehe by that definitoin, jazz is progressive metal
  12. micromesh is a great product.levels much quicker than 600 gritpaper, even though the first grade says 1500
  13. agreed...data sucks sorry, but "progressive" metal is just as generic a term as "alternative" rock...it is just a catch-all meant to absorb what otherwise can't be pigeonholed dream theatre was way before opeth lamb of god's new album....by far. but unfortunately those quotes on those covers are often pulled from the kindest review...everyone else may agree it sucks except for the guy quoted.
  14. they do sell some graphite impregnated stuff at the same place...it could be really stiff,i don't know...but it is extremely expensive
  15. locking floyd nut, floyd bridge, ebony freboard, gotoh tuners...it was a neck through as well... i now have an identical guitar, except it has alder wings instead of poplar...it is much better. the wood made it a dud...some people may have been happy with it.i found it dead.some people like basswood...i do not.poplar and alder cost roughly the samre, yet alder is clearly a superior wood in every way.you of all people should know that poplar very well may vary wildly piece to piece...alot of woods do,but my experience with it has not been good...alder on the other hand has been great every time i used it...i feel for you that your emotional appeals can't make me waffle on that..i apologize for not being wishy-washy enough to please you(J/K)
  16. i have no idea if this is the same stuff....XX garolite..it's a paper based thing. it's warped for one thing...but i think if you had this in hand you would agree...it is nowhere near as stiff as ebony...more like maybe soft maple? you know..it's very similar to the shiny side of a masonite sheet, except all the way through like that...and black rather than brown.
  17. you are such a hopeless romantic...i bet you really know how to make a girl feel special...hehe typical punk rock attitude...ever watch "SLC punk"?good movie,i think you would like it
  18. i think ebony is your best bet for an ebony substitute...in other words...not much choice if ebony is what you want. ever hear of african blackwood?
  19. but picard is the founder of the x-men...he wins. if a sub-genre only has one member(opeth) then it is not really a sub-genre now is it. besides...since no two people have the same definition of what bands are in each sub-genre..i think you are still out of luck in finding other "similar" bands...and who has tastes that narrow anyway. take up bug collecting...then you can satisfy your urge to classify on something that at least serves a small purpose ...if a cd cover says "screamo's answer to the artist formerly known as prince" then whatdoes that really tell you anyway?
  20. it's lighter than ebony...the piece i bought is 3/16"(same thickness i use for fretboards)and yeah it bends very, very easily. i am not saying it is entirely unsuitable as a fretboard...but it is no ebony substitute....and i would worry because fretboards provide alot of stiffness to a neck.i am sure some of the other types of garolite might be stiffer(this is the XX)but they are more expensive than ebony. you know that pickgaurd material you can buy from stewmac in sheets ?that's what this stuff is like. i really think cavity covers or pickgaurds and such may be the best use of this stuff.
  21. i just got my micromesh in today...the stuff is incredible...it lasts much longer than sandpaper, doesn't load up nearly as much, leaves consisten scratches, and works really, really fast with minimal effort if you go all the way to 12000 you won't need to buff...at least that's what they say...but i just went from orange peel to 3200 in under an hour...i am going to buff from there...3200 is a reasonable satin finish
