  1. yeah i got a jackson super telly in mint condition a while back in a pawn shop for $165,i got it because it has a great neck,i can set the action down to almost nothing(about 1/32") without a hint of fret buzz.seems like a waste though cause i have to leave the action higher so as to use the floyd.funny thing is i only played it once since i bought it cause i really don't like it very much.i may modify the hell out of it.
  2. this should help you out notice the red &white wires soldered together from each pickup.
  3. ooohhhh, well rye i saw that you said vantage but to be honest i thought you meant vintage.
  4. does that work like an eq?i scoop the mids out with my 12 band eq.even though i like the sound of mids in some forms of music(blues and such)i don't want to hear them when i play.taking out the mids seems to deepen and smooth out the gain, which is great for me.
  5. if it is a 4 lead humbucker then the two wires that connect the coils should be soldered together.alot of humbuckers are this way now so that you can use it as a single coil with a coil tap switch.in other words,if these 2 wires are not soldered to each other then you will only be using one side of it. if it is only a 2 wire humbucker then make sure all your connections are soldered correctly.especially check the ground to the bridge as this one is commonly cold soldered(the trem claw is so big that the soldering iron has a hard time getting it hot enough for the solder to stick to.)
  6. i agree with guitar ed,looks great.on a side note i believe all les pauls are mahogany, body AND neck.gibson is famous for that.
  7. bypassing the tone pot does not affect the tone.it will sound the same as if the tone was all the way up.and yes globbits you can wire directly to jack.i believe it is hot lead to hot jack terminal, ground lead to ground terminal, ground terminal to bridge, but this only works for one pickup, more requires a switch obviously.by the way the tone knob works by taking output away from the pickup and sending it to ground,so by turning the knob "up" you are actually taking away it's effect.which is why there is no effect on tone.
  8. is this a guitar you built are one you are modifying?because 2-way switches(mini toggle style)are used for coil taps and if this is a guitar that originally had pickups with coil tap capabilities then it might be that.if the switch came with the pickups brand new then are you sure they sent you 81s?is the emg logo the same color on both of them?on an 81 the logo is silver.the reason i ask is that the 89 has a switch to change it from an 85 sound to an s sound(single coil)it's a 2 pickups in 1 deal.also a sustainer pickup uses a 2 way switch to turn it on and off,if it is indeed a mod.
  9. you have to upload it to a hosting website first, then transfer it from there.i asked the same question about a month ago.
  10. i have seen a custom guitar at 1 1/2",but they use slim pickups and are very careful routing.i think it's called the dragonslayer?yeah here it is.,and here
  11. that sounds right.most angled necks are between 3 and 4 degrees.
  12. walnut is much sought after.good pieces anyways
  13. look here.on the back of the headstock directly behind the nut.see that lump of wood?it is used to strengthen the neck/headstock join as it is a notorious weak spot, prone to breakage especially on wizard necks with locking nuts.the volute solves this problem.
  14. yeah the great thing is that curly sycamore is alot cheaper than curly maple.
  15. yes the main thing is it makes a stiffer neck.try out an rgt 42 at your local music store.they all have 5 piece laminate necks.(maple and walnut).i think the laminated necks are superior in every way.
  16. yeah i agree with vh.check out this axe.maple and alder are great for just about anything, and choice of body wood has nothing to do with the type of bridge you put on it.no cons.some people will tell you about how if the neck breaks you're screwed but just put a volute at the headstock and everything will be o.k.
  17. sycamore is used on some high end customs as a cap.it looks very nice when finished and from what i understand has decent tonal qualities.check tom anderson guitars,i think they use sycamore.
  18. o.k. update on the new guitar.the more i play it the more i love it!this korean cheap guitar plays better than any of my others by a wide margin.(and that includes my japanese made sabre).surprisingly enough,i even played an rgt 3120 at a music store the other day and even it does not have the feel this guitar does.(looks better though).i will never buy another bolt on guitar.the upper fret access and superior tonal qualities have made it impossible for me to even consider it.i probably will buy the 3120 though as i love the translucent finish.i have the feeling that it will play nicely once broken in.i also tried one of the new mode 4 marshalls and it was complete metal massacre.more gain than you need with great tone to boot, but not much versatility.if you love slayer then this is THE amp,but useless for anything else,in my opinion. oh i do have one complaint about this guitar.same one i have about all korean guitars.those people do NOT know how to wire a guitar correctly.i am going to have to rewire the whole thing.no big deal since i am going to switch to emg's anyways, but it's just a MESS inside that control cavity.cold solder joints, crossed wires, and just too much wiring in general.why don't they shorten the pickup wires instead of just bending them in half?overall though a great guitar at a great price.
  19. they advertise prices at the stores.guitar center sells 81s for $89.the cheapest i ever got them was $70 here but that was before the pricing rules.(about 6 months ago)you have to call for prices now but i would definately check with them.anything under $80 is a really good price for humbuckers(emg's i mean)
  20. nevermind just found the answer.san antonio.wheres my brain?
  21. hey jeremy where do you live?are you the guy that lives in san antonio?
  22. that is too cool!i gotta get me one of those.
  23. time for me to correct myself yet again. i have been paying more attention to my playing and my fingers do lightly rub the fretboard on the thinner strings, but not at all on the thicker ones.that is probably why i have not noticed any fingerboard wear on my oldest guitar(which i bought used over 10 years ago),because i only played it for rythm since the frets were in such bad shape.(it is retired now,i may put a new neck on it).my new guitars see much more use on all parts of the neck but since they ARE new they don't have any wear on the fretboard. but on the original thread, rosewood and ebony are very oily woods so that may have something to do with there use on fretboards,as your fingers would tend to slide better, and maple is always clearcoated, maybe for the same reason.just a theory but there you go.
  24. i saw eric johnson play at the save our springs benefit here in austin a few years back.the guy is amazing.super smooth picking tecqnique.i think his sound may be a little sterile though,it tends to mask how bluesy he is.
